The United Nations Broadband Commission says that internet growth has slowed and more than half the people on the planet are without access to porn on the internet. :(

By the end of this year, 3.2 billion people will have some form of regular access to the Internet, up from 2.9 billion in 2014. That is 43.4 percent of the world’s population, still far short of a U.N. target of 60 percent by 2020.

Where do I fit in? I have net and don't use it for pr0n.

I feel like such an outsider now.

The internet is not all that it's cracked up to be. Not everyone 'needs" it. People need water, food, clothing, roof over their head.

A lot of these places with *shudder* no internet access are probably the same places that care more about access to clean drinking water and not dying of cholera than how stupid fat some whore celebrity's ass has gotten.

The internet is not a on the same level, of course it isn't, of need like food and water. Obviously. But, and that is a big but (I like big buts), it is something everyone should have access to. Take a good look at the world around you, and you will understand that the advantage of someone who has access to the internet vs someone who has not, is huge.

As far as pron goes, well Internet may be (was) for pron. Personally I got tired of pron really fast, so fast that I even feel a bit disgusted by it sometimes. Allowing others to play with my insticts and manipulate me via videos and or pictures somehow feels the opposite of erotic and sexy to me.

Not everyone wants/needs internet access, or wants to pay for it.

A few people at the office don't have internet access at home, or on a smart phone. If they need to access something on the internet they do it at the office. One has a tablet with WiFi only they use for reading books, and they just stop somewhere that has free internet access when they want to download a new book.

Since I work in IT, I have to have internet access to do my job.

No one claiming the internet is dead? Strange, when pc sales slowed, so many news organizations, bloggers and tech sites said PC was dead.. every single year.

I have reached the end of the internet and found that it really was not what I expected. My wife works from home on the net but myself I use it about 50% as much as I used to.

It is fun however to drop on to the huffingtonpost and poke a stick at the libtards and tree huggers, stir up the bees nest then get kicked off for the 19th time.

I do come here and a few other sites to keep up with current pc building info and youtube for learning blender and nip slips.

Honestly, they aren't missing out on anything but a few conveniences.

It's businesses that suffer. It's vital infrastructure if you want a business to grow, especially when you need to reach wealthier markets as so many businesses in the most disconnected countries do.

Tiny, backwater countries don't really have the market conditions to spread the technology the best way, the free market. There's just not enough return when your businesses are only dealing with the local market. So it falls upon the government to invest in that sort of infrastructure. The free market brings prosperity and progress like no other system, but when a country is virtually devoid of resources to sell suffering from bad governance there's not a lot of investment in infrastructure.

Sounds like you're doing it wrong. Why on earth would you let pr0n "play with your insticts" and "manipulate" you? Deff doing it wrong :p

I work with some people that just use their phone and a regular data plan to get online. Facebook, Candy Crush, and email doesn't require much for the average person.

I object to articles that imply our overall progress on issues such as adoption of the internet can somehow be judged by the number of poor and starving people in various 3rd world shitholes

Although I understand your views on basic human needs however speaking as an older fart with kids I feel Internet IS just as valuable as electricity and running water. In fact it should be treated as a utility IMO. Why? For the simple fact practically the entire world's worth of information is now at your fingertips. My 4th grader is learning subjects and concepts that I didn't see till high school. And if he's having trouble and I'm lost I can quickly and easily find what I need online and not drive 20 miles to the nearest library to look in an outdated book.

The Internet is to information as flight is to travel.

I'm not saying put this need above others but the US' infrastructure is still in the dark ages. We should be coast to coast fiber by now. Meanwhile telco's are making billions and investing insignificant amounts in expanding services (mostly with Fed money).
