So, according to the latest from DICE, Star Wars Battlefront will have dedicated servers after all.

DICE's Jamie Keen explains: "We’ll still have dedicated servers. Absolutely. It’s one of the hallmarks of making sure we deliver an unparalled [sic] online servers for the game."

That wasn't ever in question. Obviously a 32-player game isn't going to be P2P.

It's the server browser that people want.

Does it really matter if a server is "dedicated" or not as long as the performance is there?

Maybe I'm defining dedicated differently, I was assuming they weren't say there would be user hosted servers since that would offer no benefit without a server browser.

Either way I don't care and I'm in.

I guess since they were match-making they may have been worried that there was a player host maybe? do they even do that anymore?

Ah that brings back the old days, when the host was doing bad they would just unplug the network plug and kill the whole match.

thats great they are doing dedicated servers but no server browser for PC still means Im not supporting it. A server browser helps a games shelf life so much, The ability to play your favorite server with good mods that can kick hackers and griefers really does make the difference,

That used to be so irritating plus the lag free advantage the host would have.

If executed correctly, that would've been awesome. Have your set of no mod servers that utilize a hack-verification system, then your free-for-all servers or servers that control certain mods. Problem I see is possibility of premature bans or abuse to the system.

I'm sure that Disney won't let them do it regardless of how much people whine about this. They're going to want to control this though and through to prevent potential (real or imagined) damage to their IP. This system actually works quite well for Titanfall so it doesn't bug me too much, but I can imagine that more hardcore players are probably up in arms over it.

Trying to deflect the issue by talking about dedicated servers is silly, of course they were going to use dedicated servers. This sort of game requires it.

Skill+ping based matchmaking = low skilled players matched with low skilled, high skilled players with high skilled. and self important "hardcore" players won't be able to shit on noobs like they can in Battlefield games. boo hoo. Is it really any wonder why they're implementing it like this?

Matchmaking still doesn't let me play with my friends+gaming clan, especially with Origin's crappy social system.

Everything I ever learned from a video game I learned from a better player. When I became good, I made sure to balance teams myself by always switching to the losing side. Even highly skilled players get bored when teams are stacked and usually leave the server after finishing their match, thus allowing balance to come back into play.

There's no proof that you *won't* be able to join servers with friends. I'd lay money there will be a way.

No disagreement and that's how I got better in Battlefield games, but I was speaking from the standpoint of the publisher and wanting it to be a bigbox mainstream success that little billy on his xbox will keep playing and buying DLC's for.

The servers aren't even fully "dedicated". They're CentOS boxes, using linux KVM to virtualize the actual server client.

Source: I just helped set up 200+ of these servers.

So why don't they come out and say that? Problem solved! yet all they are willing to say is Oh Boy we have dedicated servers? Big deal every game has dedicated servers and still it's only their word that they are...no way to prove your game is not on a server running 9 other things, its all virtuallized anyway so it's one hardware box running who knows how many "dedicated" servers

Maybe it doesn't occur to them because the ability to play in the same game with your friends goes without saying. In any case, they're coming out and saying there's a free open beta a month before release and everyone can evaluate the game for themselves.

Not sure how this semantics masturbation over the meaning of "dedicated" is even a thing. By dedicated they obviously mean "not P2P". It's hardly a revelation that game servers get virtualized, every GSP does it unless you pay a fortune for a standalone box.

lol

Try the beta. I am. I really expect ot tp be boring at best. How you could make this source material boring is a true corporate skill.

Lol remembering your earlier posts especially regarding Battlefront, I have to wonder why you are playing multiplayer games at all. Turd attitude brah

Rest assured the only reasons they are implementing this is monetary, not out of the goodness of their hearts so that little innocent you doesn't have to deal with the big fat evil gamer nerds who obviously poopsock the game 24/7, conveniently explaining your incompetence at said game.

I know all that. I suppose I should've ended the paragraph with /devil's advocate

It's a cssualized game, they want console kids to be able to pick up and play and pew pew and buy DLC.

We want dedicated servers... that we can run on our own... on our own machines at home...

And a server browser

32 players running off your crappy cable modem, what could go wrong?! other than unplugging your ethernet cable when you're losing of course.

or induced lag so the host can blow away players before they even show on their screens lol. No the very few people that actually have a system that could handle it and an internet with a well configured router to handle such matches is too far and few to worry about. Peer hosted games have always been a bad experience for me and has made me dislike multiplayer games for a while. I did enjoy running a UT server on my dual pentium 3 system though, that was a fun time.
