SFF Case for mini-ITX GPU/MB

Does anyone know if the Silverstone SFX-L PSU will fit in this case? I just stumbled upon this thread and I want to buy one now

It could fit but only if you don't use the 3.5" HDD mount and even then it will be a very tight fit. IIRC, the power connectors on the silverstone 500W SFX-L unit are not flush, they protrude out by a few mms, and that will mean that you've got even less space to squeeze the cables around than the ~22mm you get normally. Additionally, getting the PSU inside seems to be an utter pain as well as the opening to get it through is a bit tighter than the space inside.

The corsair SFX-L seems to be the better bet, that one's got flush power connectors. Unless I'm mistaken.

I don't plan on using any 2.5 or 3.5 HDDs. Just from eyeing it, it looks like it still has more room compared to the Ncase that basically has cables sit on the GPU.

I'm pretty sure the Corsair is a typical sized SFX.

Yeah it does look possible without the 3.5 inch HDD. I bet you could do the SFX-L with a 2.5 inch in that spot.

What color shell is everyone interested in? I'm leaning toward the white shell, I think it has a nice contrast with the black top surface and base.

The GPU on the bottom in the pictures is 170mm long. With a bit of tolerance, you get about 22mm of space for the cables to fit, and I think in the M1 you've got about 20mm to work with.
But it is certainly safer in the Osmi as the cables will only press against a flat wall, not against sharp through-hole soldering contacts.

I'm also leaning towards the white shell, also if I was to paint it, it would be a lot easier on the white shell.

@Gtek, what is the clearance between the RAM slots and the 3.5 inch HDD? It looks like you would need to use low profile RAM in order to use the 3.5 inch HDD. I'm also asking because my motherboard power ATX power connector lies right under where the HDD would go.

Would also like to know this since I realized that I'm in the same situation as well... :p

Hi, yes you will need low profile RAM modules if using 3.5" HDD. I believe I mentioned it before.

To all customers who paid for Osmi case already and still waiting: You should receive an e-mail with free product key for Metal Gear Solid V, later on today.

Seriously!?

Now, I wish I can install my Nano already!

Thanks Gtek!

EDIT: Also, it's good that I bought low profile RAM when I still had my M1, covered there.

Right thanks for the confirmation. I'm just concerned about the ATX power cables, which on certain motherboards plug into the motherboard where the ram slots normally sit. Just wondering if there are at least a couple millimeters of clearance from the low profile ram to the HDD that could be used to fold these power cables through if necessary.

And also, thanks so much! That's very kind!

Gtek:

Would SFX-L improve airflow? I just ordered one of your cases and have a Fury Nano arriving this week. I also have a 4790K and a Xeon 1231v3 and I'm not sure which processor to use. The Xeon would let me get away with a low profile Noctua cooler where the 4790K overwhelms it.

Ideas?

As for CPU cooler, you could try Cooltek's LP53 or the recently released Cryorig C7, both of which are low profile and support a TDP of 100W.

I don't see SFX-L improving airflow in any way... 4790K, I think you can use it with noctua cooler, but not sure about overclocking :).

Regarding re-painting 'shell', remember it's powder coated, so you can take it to you local powder coater and he should be able to strip it down to bare metal for you easily and re-powder it to any colour/finish you like, for not a lot of money. The only problem is the logo, which you will need to brake off and glue it back on afterwards.

!!!
I just spoke with manufacturer and all parts are ready for powder coating. He has one case build up, so I will drive there in a couple of hours to approve it, before coating.

Very exciting!

As far as SFX-L, the improved airflow would probably be to the PSU itself due to it's larger fan... It looks like it would fit, especially if not using a 3.5 inch drive, but Gtek can probably better comment on that.

Hmm, thinking about this a little more, due to the added added size of an SFX-L power supply, this may actually impede airflow? Would be cool to get a smoke test and or temperature tests to see if this matters.

That being said, what would be the best regular sized SFX power supply to handle the Fury, 4790K, 16GB RAM, Gigabyte Z97 Wii motherboard? I'm thinking the modular Silverstone 450W Gold would be plenty of watts to handle this but what SFX power supply has easiest cables to bend for wiring reasons?

The size of the case is going to limit overclocking (if anything, undervolting and underclocking may be necessary) as the Fury puts out a lot more heat than the 970 ITX.

The loss of 3.5" isn't a huge issue. You can buy decent 1TB hybrid drives for cheap now and they're only 9mm thick. So if you pair one of these larger drives (for steam library) with a fast SSD we should be set storage wise.

Gtek: I understand you're already giving out MGS vouchers (amazing game, thanks for this!) but have you considered eventually including dust filters? Positive air pressure always creates a lot of dust and filters make a huge difference.

Would 10mm of space be enough for a CPU cooler?

I was thinking of getting this cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA59T2X80637

Up to 130W TDP, but it's 60mm tall, meaning there's only 10mm of space between the fan and the PSU.

Would this be okay or will it be cutting it close?

EDIT: Nevermind, it's only 45mm tall, I'll get it.

I think it's 60mm tall with the fan. I think it would probably be fine! Gtek has said 74mm is the total distance between the CPU and the PSU. 1.4cm should work just fine...

You mean negative air pressure. Yes, dust filters... they do help, but they restrict air flow and you need to clean them. So you can just as well can take the shell off and blast internals with can of compressed air every couple of months. It's a tiny case, it will take no time. Preventive maintenance.

True, but even if the Osmi doesn't come with one, I'll be picking one up (only $5 each so not bad). :D

I have this cooler and a few others on this forum as well. The QC is not that great. I prefer my Noctua NH-L9i much better. The NH-L9i is also easier to install and it's easier to use other fans.

True, airflow will be key to keeping noise down.

One annoying thing about the Radeon R9 Nano is the fan is "always on" so the case will accumulate dust faster than other cards.

Just as an FYI the VRM buzzing or coil whine the sample cards went out to review sites with does not appear to be an issue on retail cards from the few people who have them so far. I am of course concerned about this noise and will test my Sapphire card out. All cards have some coil whine (my 970 was really bad) but it's all about the pitch of the sound that matters.

If anyone else here has a Retail R9 Nano please let us know if the coil whine is an issue. My Nano hasn't arrived yet as it's being shipped from California to Canada so I don't expect it until next week :(

Gtek: Any ETA for first batch shipping dates yet? :D

I got one the day after it released, currently in my M1, no coil whine, my Intel stock is louder than it underload.

And yet, it performs better than my old 980 at stock, and better than a Fury when OC'ed.

Good card.

Hi,

It's the first time I ever post a thing on a computer forum but it seems to be the only way to make contact whith HG-Computers...

I ordered thr Osmi 10 days ago from France and paid it the same day with bank transfert.
Since then, I mailed them twice to confirm they got the money.
No answer, order still on hold, money vanished...

I read here they are late but Offer MGS.
No mail for me (but that's not my main concern).

So, since Gtek seems to be active on this thread, I hope he will be able to reasure me.

I'm building a mini ITX gaming monster using skylake, R9 nano and would love to fit all this in my Osmi.

Looking forward to reag Gtek.

Best regards to you all.

Tinkerer,

Thank you so much...
I missed this little post.
I mail him right away.

Thanks again.

Just ordered my custom PCIE cables, hopefully those will come in before the Osmi does.

Gtek: Any update on the case? How did the powder paint process go last week?

Great, thanks for confirming. AMD really messed up by sending out review cards with terrible coil whine then.

My Sapphire Nano should arrive tomorrow or Wednesday :)

What power supply are you going to be using? and what cables?

I'm still needing to order a power supply and want to the most efficient one with the best cable management. Silverstone Gold 450 or 600 modular is currently on the list of candidates. I think 600 may be wasteful but could come in useful if I ever upgrade the existing Z97/4790K to a Haswell Hex core down the road.

Go with the 600W since it comes with flat cables unlike the 450W one. I'm using the 600W one.

Also, I ordered custom just to look nice... ;) all my old cables would have fit.

On the other hand, the 600W units fan cannot be replaced while the 450W unit has fans available that you can use to make it more quiet.

So if you really want to find out what fits your needs best, post in one of the SFX PSU topics, where people used those units for a long time and know all their merits.

Production Update.

I went to see the manufacturer last week to inspect parts before powder coating, but after test assembling one case I noticed a couple of misalignments. a millimetre here and there, so I had to work with them to remedy this issue (which shouldn't be there as I addressed all the problems before).
Anyway, parts went for powder coating and I will pick them up tomorrow.

Ah that's a shame–– do they have to remake all of the cases now?

Good thing they're a certified shop

These things do happen though. Hopefully this won't take more than a week to fix.
