Hah! I could just imagine the look on someone's face if I pulled up in my car to give them a ride.

Kalanick, CEO of the ride-hailing service that's become the world's highest-valued startup, said the perfect future he sees is one in which every car driving around is connected to Uber, available to give you a lift whenever you need.

On the one hand, yes, creating good systems that identify slack/underused resources and maximizing their use instead of wastefully creating new resources and under-utilizing them is a great goal.

On the other hand, this sleazebag having his hands on all of that and rent-seeking to his grubby heart's content once they force everyone else out of the market? Hell to the no.

I would immediately gawk at the car and then proceed to tell you that you are picking up the wrong person, my wallet isn't deep enough to ride in that one. :)

Then hurry up and open the service up outside major cities asshole. Hell, I would sign up just to pick up a few $ here and there when I'm out otherwise running errands. All they really need to do is fix their app to allow users and drivers to detail out a few options. I for example don't want animals in my car, service or no. I would rather that pickup go to a driver who isn't worried about it. Given I'm not looking to be a full time driver, just a random pickup here and there I don't see that as a problem. Obviously if I signed on board as full time, I would have less choice in that. But so long as the proper options are available for both, it benefits both parties and no one gets discriminated against. Those with an animal service or no, just check a box saying animal and it gets dispatched to an appropriate driver, Simple and easy.

There use to be a time in this country when we all respected each other enough that all cars could be considered taxi's. This however has been the case in my life time (35).

Hear, hear. Speaking of animals, I would most assuredly check the box for "No Fat Chix'

Yeah because I'm going to pull off and pick up some random person and drive them. Just what I want - some random person in my car that I keep spotless. What happens if I god forbid get into a car accident, is uber going to pick up the tab and assume legal liability for the passenger? Are they going to pay for my losses if the person tries to carjack me? Why would I expose myself to the inconvenience and those risks for $5.75?

Uber drivers are suckers.

I had considered doing this for a few extra bucks during the day since I work full time on a third shift. I thought people would get a huge kick out of being picked up in a Fiat 500 Abarth, too bad they don't allow 2 door cars.

Their loss, it's a fun clowntastic car ride.

^same, they dont yet allow 2dr coupes, so my '14 Mustang GT is barred as well.

The amount Uber pays you isn't worth the wear and tear that it'll put on your car. Usually works out to be quite a bit less than minimum wage.

Especially on on a Abarth. Everything has been shoehorned ~just so~ into that car so that when it breaks you're going to be paying out the ass in labor to fix it.

If you really feel you have to do the whole taxi driver on the side for peanuts gig then get a 4 or 6 cyl. engined Crown Vic. Gas usage isn't too bad, the engine bay is huge so its easy to work on, and parts are cheap as hell + easily available since the platform was around for something silly like 40yr. Yea acceleration will be sluggish since that car is so heavy but if you're taxi'ing in a city acceleration doesn't really matter too much.

You laugh but I'd hunt you down on uber next time I was in Vegas for sure.

Way more cool points arriving in that than a chintzy yellow lambo

My exact thoughts....I guess it works if you're really desperate to try and make some money or something.

Uber ceo wants every car to be a uber car.
Microsoft ceo wants every computer to be a windows computer.
Apple ceo wants every phone to be an iphone.
Sony ceo wants every home to have a ps4.

This sounds like a paid article.

ProTip: High traffic sites cost money to operate reliably.

I'm good. I'm not a huge fan of strangers in general, and my own friends don't know how to get into a car properly without scuffing everything to shit. Why would a stranger care at all then?

Uber and their competitors won't ever get there, but with automated driverless cars they'll get very, very close. Driverless cars have the potential to completely upend the entire concept of car ownership for everyone save for those living in remote regions or enthusiasts, and the overhauling of the concept of car insurance is likely going to render even that mostly non-viable economically.

For everyone else living in urban and suburban areas, which is a percentage that hasn't stopped growing for much of this and last century, you're likely better off with some sort of subscription service that'll preposition you a vehicle on demand that will then get out of hair once you're finished using it for the time being. In other words, Uber combined with Zipcar, which I'm pretty sure the former have already built into future plans.

(obviously not at the same time)

Big car guy here. Wouldn't mind taking my Carrera S down to Vegas from Boston to get a ride in your machine. You can drive my car too if you don't get any body oils or dead skin cells on anything. Also don't breathe on anything. I'm particular.

So would people get into an Uber vehicle that happens to be a white cargo van with no windows?

Wait, how can they say they want every car to be an Uber thing if they disallow some peoples' cars because of how many doors they have? That's kinda contradictory and just speaks volumes about how clueless the Uber CEO is about even his own company's policies.
