What mobo should I get for i7-5930K?

Hi,

There are so many mobos but even on newegg there are very few reviews so I am not sure which mobo stands out more.

I just want 128GB memory support, tons of SATA connections and USB3.0 connections, not 2.0.

Other than that it all seems standard right?

Thanks a lot.

It depends. A lot of the differences between x99 boards come from how the PCIe lanes from the CPU are distributed. Remember, with X99, you only get 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes from the PCH (Compared to 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes on Z170!), anything that wants to use a PCIe 3.0 lane has to use some of the CPU lanes. With a 5930k you have plenty of PCIe lanes from the CPU, enough for just about anything, but motherboards have to be designed to accommodate the 5820k which has less PCIe lanes.

As an example, x99 motherboards that can do 3-way SLI with the limited number of lanes that a 5820k offers often lack features such as an M.2 slot. Since you aren't using a 5820k you wouldn't really want a motherboard with that configuration. Even if you did want to do 3-way SLI, you could do it on many boards that will only allow 2-way SLI with a 5820k because your 5930k has more lanes.

Thanks for the info. So that means with 2011-v3 mobos, I will be bottlenecked due to their design?

No, not at all. With a 5930k you have 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes coming from the CPU (28 with 5820k). You don't need many lanes coming from the PCH due to that fact. But since motherboards either have 28 or 40 PCIe lanes from the CPU to work with depending on which CPU is installed, many are designed with 28 in mind, including compromises that you wouldn't need to make since you have a 40-lane CPU.

I like my Asus x99 Sabertooth. It has M2, sata3, sata express, usb3, usb2, usb3.1, etc.

Only had it for a week or two, so far so good.

I have one also. I haven't had any issues. Rock solid for me so far.

My current one is also sabertooth x79 I think but this was plagued with some issues AFAIK. So that left a bad remark for me. What do you guys think?

Talking about PCI lane limitation, I am going to presume that the ONLY bad point about it is that you're limited in terms of insane SLIing, which quite honestly, is a problem for a tiny amount.

Correct?

correct, only reason to even go 2way SLI is for 4k and quad sli is just silly, any x99 board is going to give you plenty of bandwidth unless you are trying to do something extreme that will max out the available lanes.

the28 lanes of the 5820k are more than enough for most the 40 lanes on the 5830k are overkill.

I went with an asus x99-m only because it was a budget option. I am only going to use 1 gpu and its supports cheaper but slower sata m.2 drives.

Is this a good memory set guys?

I don't know if there is one that can offer better performance.

If you're looking for 128GB memory support eventually, I'd look at a 4x16GB kit for your first 64GB otherwise you won't have any room to upgrade. That being said, you might need to flash a new bios on some boards (I know the Sabertooth needs Bios 1801 before it recognizes 16GB modules) prior to using 16GB modules.

The x99-m ws? Budget option? It's like $275...lol. I haven't seen a non WS version.

Well most boards seem to be $225 to 250, the higher end ones are $400. I agree it isnt a budget options, but it is still below the middle

I would probably choose the MSI SLI plus for the inexpensive option

Thanks I thought 16GBs didn't exist for non-ECC memory, no? Otherwise I wanted to do that too. I only see 8x8gb for non-server boards.

that i because DDR4 availability is a bit odd right now, but you can find them in the 8x16gb kits

I also wouldn't advise you spend a lot on high speed RAM as it seems to me that a lot of people are having issues getting RAM to run at the higher 3000+ speeds on x99 boards, but that is just my impression maybe. I am sure tons of peopel will respond with their setups that contradict what I just said :)

You could also buy 2 of these

My board was shipped with 1801. Ordered two weeks ago.

Thanks I never saw that one. Would that work with the CPUs I mention in the OP? Having 2 of those would be good.

I also read though buying more of the same memory can cause issues instead of getting a complete pack that has the memory amount you have. Is this true? For example getting 4 separate 8GB sticks vs getting them in a single pack. Because the latter supposedly tested together. Is this BS?

Given the choice I would choose a single skit of DIMMs rather than separate ones, but I have upgraded numerous boards by adding additional memory without issues. I do not know that it is really a valid concern. I always say work for the best outcome, but then you have to make choices depending on what is available.

If I was in your place and wanted 64GB and planned to go 128gb later and I couldn't find a single quad channel kit I would just buy 2 of the same dual channel kits as long as they are on the QVL list of the board.

Thanks man. Is there a different between H110 and their latest GTX? I checked on youtube and GTX is said to be very loud? Also how does Nzxt fare against Corsair coolers?

So far based on your recommendations and some research I did, particularly on memory and mobo, I settled on these:

Core i7-5930K directcanada
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 64GB (8 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2800 (PC4 22400) newegg.ca
ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard newegg.ca

Since I am in Canada, they come out about $1815.

What do you guys think? Is this a good build?

I got 4 X99-A mobo's (exactly the same as the USB 3.1 versions, only cheaper).
1 got 2 faulty memory lanes ( 5 and 7). Which made it show no ram in those slot's, then 4GB (with 8GB sticks) and then 1 stick, sometimes both,... The other 3 are solid though. RMA will be smooth.

Why did you go for the 5930K over the 5820K?

I got the 3.1 version because it was only $10 more expensive.

I got 5930 because I read it can be OC'ed better. Also 5820 isn't that much cheaper. If it was $350, maybe but it was $500 I think in canada which is a lot already.
