Who's getting a HMD?

I'm a surprised there aren't already any threads about the upcoming HMDs - the Oculus Rift and HTC's Vive.

Does anyone plan to get one of these at the end of this year/next? Personally I'm holding off on any new monitor purchases until these are both on the market, as I'll probably get one of the two.

I'll buy the first VR headset that has 1440p or higher resolution to come out. 1080p just doesn't do it for me.

I'll buy one after they release the 3rd or 4th revision, the one that's really good. If they don't make it that far then I'll be glad I didn't bother.

I have the old (15year old?) VFX1, the Rift DK1 and the DK2. I'll definitely be grabbing the production version when out.

It doesn't really interest me one bit. It would have to be like Quix said. Its going to have to get really, really, good for me to buy into this product. I don't see it happening soon. Just my own opinion.

I won't wait that long, but I'll be getting one. As a flight sim player, I've wanted an HMD for as long as I can remember.

Just think of the porn possibilities dude...

I'm waiting to see if the screendoor effect of OR is eliminated.
A serious problem.

I think it's just a fad really your eyeballs need to breath the extra weight on your head limited sofware how would a mulitplayer games works?

Sounds nice but I seen this one developers Eyes for the Rift and his eyes were all funky no thanks. If there is a generation of kids raised in VR we are in more trouble.

Can you give some pics or vids about that eye thing?

ugh...

Only he's right. It's going to be an eyestrain bonanza with those things. People don't have any conception of how uncomfortable it is just sitting in front of a monitor in a normal context.

HMDs are a joke. There's no software, no killer app, it's GOOFY, nobody wants to wear a stupid helmet, and it's going to be uncomfortable. I can smell this turd a MILE away.

Also, there's a thing called the 21st century Carmack curse. Nothing Carmack's been associated with in the 21st century has been a success.

Quake 3: Team Arena: shitty expansion flop.

Doom 3? Disappointing flop.

Armadildo Aerospace? 8 million in the red, never got anything accomplished. Failure.

Rage? Horrible misfire with shitty, pop in engine.

Doom 4? Nightmare development cycle, abandoned halfway through.

VR? Next disaster on the list.

He's box office poison. Whenever I see him associated with something now, I just think, "incoming bomb."

Anyhow, stepping away from the rambling... with the new VR Mode in NV (and AMD) drivers I was trying out the stuff thats compatible with Rift Runtime 0.7. Rift has now got to the point it just "works" though you need to use software updated to work on v0.7. I already tried Project Cars, which is polished and works pretty amazing but I really need a proper Steering Wheel setup.

But today tried QuakeSpasm Rift, a post of QuakeSpasm (itself a clean up of Quake 1). When I was able to use the VFX1 HMD 18 years ago Quake (rendered in software) was the most advanced game that would work with it! QuakeSpasm on the Rift is sharp and despite the way OTT run speed, its not as sickening as expected. Its also fairly scary jump out of the seat-ish! Definately would be one of my "demo" games next time I bring it into work. What would completely set it off would Razor Hydra support like HL2 VR.. maybe one day.

List here of 0.7 compatible stuff:

HMDs will cause less eyestrain than any television or monitor, it's the nature of the technology. sitting in front of a monitor shouldn't be uncomfortable at all btw, you're doing something wrong. "no software" is laughably ignorant. goofy, ok. they aren't helmets, the majority of your head can breathe, and the oculus has a very breathable material for where it connects with your face. i've never heard anyone that's used an oculus rift complain about comfort, i mean the thing is going to weigh close to half a pound, give me a break. the only things i think that need to be addressed at this point are resolution, refresh rate, and usability for nearsighted people.

the "ugh" was completely justified. his post sounds like it was written by a stereotypical 70 year old. like what does multiplayer have to do with anything? "Sounds nice but I seen this one developers Eyes for the Rift and his eyes were all funky no thanks." are you fucking kidding me? and how is VR in the state it's in going to be any more "dangerous" to kids than gaming on a television or monitor is now?

you should probably educate yourself just a little bit about the subject before forming an opinion.

I'm trying to care but the vision of playing with weird controllers in a clunky helmet wired to my pc is rather low on my list of coolest things ever.

I'll wait for reviews. Then I'll wait for proper amount of games since I haven't see anything really exciting yet. And last piece of puzzle - since we are speaking about high resolution games at 90-120 fps I'll need to see what GPUs are needed since I'm not sure if single big Pascal will be enough.

edit: also I need to know how it work with glasses

No kidding. It's going to be a flop because the basic premise they're expecting to people accept is stupid.

No, I'm not wearing a fucking helmet to play video games.

How old are you? 14?

You're already sitting alone in a room staring at a screen. Who gives a fuck if you're wearing something on your head?

I guess I can't expect everyone who hasn't tried it yet to understand what it's really like. I remember when I didn't think I needed a smart phone. Now I can't get through a day without touching it at least 10 times.

I will buy the best one available when Starcitizen Persistent Universe comes out .... so that will be like version 8 of the Oculus Rift consumer version.... :p

Weird controllers, like a HOTAS?

I wear a weird hat for my TrackIR now, and I'd like to try out those Gunnar glasses. I've been getting some eye strain lately when on my PC for extended periods. A helmet isn't much worse.

I've got both an Oculus DK1 and DK2 so I'll be picking up the release version when it hits, likely a VIVE as well depending on how the final version looks. My DK2 is more comfortable than some headphones I've owned. The consumer version should be even better as it has a cloth covering and it looks like a better strap configuration, plus is supposed to handle glasses even better. The VIVE is better with glasses than the DK2, have to see which is best in the final versions.

You'll still want a good monitor, it's not a replacement. When mice came out no-one threw away their keyboards.

Any word on the resolution for the consumer Rift or VIVE?

As for a monitor, definitely agree. You are still going to want to do all of your "normal" activities like desktop/internet surfing with a regular monitor. No one is going to put on a HMD for that..

The RIft features two 1440P OLED panels. It's the most affordable way to get OLED in PC gaming. Fuck yes I'm buying one. OLED or BUST.

"This headset works with 2160 x 1200 resolution - that's one resolution over two OLED displays"
translation: 1200x1080 is the resolution that your eye sees. 1440p is 2560x1440. not even in the same neighborhood.

Fair point, still OLED > higher resolution.

1200x1080? Eww. That is the consumer version Rift resolution? Count me out until the next upgrade.

I mean, VR has the unfair disadvantage of having to handle each eye separately (much like active 3d glasses alternating frames etc etc) so it IS pushing 2160x1200 pixels which is a very respectable fraction of 1440p, especially @90hz and considering it's the only OLED PC display under 55", I think it's pretty good. But you are right, it could definitely use more resolution.

At some point you have to allow them to create a product at a sellable price point even if we'd personally prefer a more halo-type product in terms of features and damn the price.

I don't even want an "HMD", I just want OLED panels at reasonable sizes (24-30 inches for me) with semi-decent resolution and refresh rates (aka 1440p+, 120hz+)

I'll buy one with OLED displays that's properly calibrated with no black crush, srgb overcoverage and bluish color temperature.
