Is it weird that I haven’t seen a single one of this guy’s videos? Are there any fans that could elaborate on his appeal?

Kjellberg created the PewDiePie channel six years ago. In December of 2012, he signed a deal with online video content creator Maker Studios, which is now owned by Disney.

Hell, I have never even heard of him until your post. Then again I have never watched "Let's Play" videos so that is likely why.

I only saw him once, when he appeared on an episode of South Park playing DAI. Never heard of him before, never seen any of his videos.

He just has an attitude that some people like. The appeal isn't the driver of his success. The driver of his success was Let's Play videos by nature draws people who watch more of a video. That majorly influenced his ratings and promotion (hit results etc) on youtube. He started doing them at just the right time, so his channel got massive amounts of followers. This generated tons of ad revenue which undoubtedly continually feeding into itself for keeping him at the top of search results.

So essentially, PewDiePie makes youtube a lot of money so his videos are prioritized on search results.

I remember watching a couple of his videos back before he blew up. He was just another YT guy of no note. I completely forgot about him, until it came to my attention a couple of years later that he'd since become the biggest thing on YT. I couldn't quite credit that, but what the hell . . . more power to him.

I think I'm too old for this shit, because I see his videos and I just want to say "hey you, say something substantial that explains why you're doing what you are in the video game, or STFU already"

I am curious though out of 10 billion views what is the demographic of his viewership.

The guy is super fucking annoying. My cousin watches him CONTENTLY, I am talking 10 videos a day. I hear that stupid high pitched scream of his all the time.. hate the guy.

Same here. And after that South Park episode, I knew I never wanted to hear his voice again.

Kids like it though, they will grow out of it.

8-14 mostly.

I watched one video and still today wonder what exactly he was saying. I felt my brain hardening after 30 seconds putting me at real risk of dementia in my later years.

lets plays lmfaorof.

almost as stupid as the unboxing.

proof the reality tv is here forever.

The fact that this guy is so popular scares me. If he's entertainment then we're all fucked.

I expect it's a fad, I hope he's saving a lot of the money because I can't see his shtick lasting very long.

Whatever one thinks of him, he's obviously a smart guy, his antics aside. I think he knows this train won't keep rolling forever, and he's planning accordingly.

I see lots of jealousy. Say what you want, he's making more money than any of us acting like that.

What's with people like you always putting peoples dislike towards him as being "jealousy"?

I don't like him because he's annoying as fuck, has no intelligent humor (or any humor in my eyes for that matter), and totally takes advantage of his young feeble minded audience with his "Bro" bullshit. No better than some cult leader. Makes them think that he actually gives a shit about them outside of the revenue they continue to stream into his bank accounts.

I give him credit for somehow...some fucking how...becoming the biggest internet celebrity but that doesn't mean I still don't think he's a shit bag who takes advantage of those that don't know better. Has nothing to do with jealousy.

Regardless of what you think of his videos, he is pretty generous. He has donated tens of thousands of dollars to charities.

I envy his success.
Makes a shit ton of money for what are basically shitty videos with stupid commentary.

39 million subscribers is just ridiculous. Apparently there is a huge community of video game spectators who would rather watch than play.
I'm with Jimmy Kimmel.

Pewdie pie is proof that idiocracy is in full effect. If I had a space ship I would have left years ago.

Thats highly questionable. If i had more money then i could poke a bank account at... i'd give lots away to!

What to see how generous he really is? Find out how much he donated BEFORE hand. I bet there's a rather large discrepancy.

And i'm with Mut1ny. Why is it people always confuse people's obviously none jealous dislikes, for jealousy. Projecting?

A man has $10 and gives it away to charity. Another man has $10000 and gives away $20 to charity. Which is more generous?

I'm sure any of us would give tens of thousands of dollars to charity, if we had $20 million or so in the bank. Obviously, we all don't have that kind of money, so some of us give what we can.

I never get that either. I'm happy that someone is making that much money playing video games and not actually being good at it. That means just about any of us could make a lot of money doing the same and not have to put in 8+ hours of game training to be competitive at tournaments.

Now do I like the guy? No. I'm 34 and obviously not the demographic that his videos are designed around. It feels like I'm watching a kids show on Disney.

I've only watched some of his vids. TBH, some of his reaction were pretty funny but.... most of it seemed boring.

I think it's the way he connects with his watchers, that or I watched more of the bad ones he's put up than his good.

most of his viewers are bunch of kids who searches on youtube and click the first one right away. Yes I see he's boring. Talk about just playin video games and earning some money, where can I apply for such a job?

I didn't mention anyone specific, but some of it comes off as pure jealousy. Not all is obviously, calm down.

That said, how is he taking advantage of anyone exactly? That's a supremely stupid thing to say. His videos are completely free to watch, no one is forcing anyone. Sorry but that is the exact opposite of taking advantage of anyone. Just because a large group of people like something you hate, doesn't mean they are being taken advantage of. I don't like his videos, but I respect what he's accomplished as I do similar work and know how hard it is producing that much content.

I have a friend that has a few videos up on youtube. He tells me he makes around $400 dollars per 100,000 views. So this guy has enough money to live down the street from Notch if he wanted.

I only saw him once, when he appeared on an episode of South Park playing DAI. Never heard of him before, never seen any of his videos.

Same here, and I thought that episode was one of the worst South Park episodes.

I am not a big PDP fan (or any of the streaming gamers on YouTube) but why should their success be attributed to their "taking advantage" of their viewers ... there does seem to be a line of thinking with some people that because they don't like something then nobody else should either (that seems a little arrogant) ...

making money as a media celebrity is not a crime and to do it well you do need to accommodate your audience ... that doesn't make you a cult leader or them fools necessarily ... there does seem to be a sour grapes mentality that if someone does something successfully then they are somehow cheating or their customers are somehow mentally deficient or cult like followers (cough cough APPLE cough cough) ... that line of thinking is wrong and attempts to diminish anyone who succeeds ... I will leave you with this quote from Atlas Shrugged which seems appropriate:

"But you say that money is made by the strong at the expense of the weak? What strength do you mean? It is not the strength of guns or muscles. Wealth is the product of man's capacity to think. Then is money made by the man who invents a motor at the expense of those who did not invent it? Is money made by the intelligent at the expense of the fools? By the able at the expense of the incompetent? By the ambitious at the expense of the lazy? Money is made – before it can be looted or mooched – made by the effort of every honest man, each to the extent of his ability. An honest man is one who knows that he can't consume more than he has produced.

I think, based on the content I see, XpertThief is gonna blow right by this guy given time.

10 billion views though. 10 BILLION. How much money is that? Is it every thousand views he makes a buck? based on a crappy site he may be making 3.46 per thousand views that equates to 3.46 million dollars for the youtube views. So this guy may be pulling down a million dollars a year for being annoying. I'll do that for a million a year NO QUESTIONS ASKED. ;)

His videos may be stupid but the man found a market and grabbed it by the balls. Over 10mil/year is nothing to be mad at.

I've heard of him, but I've never watched a single video of him.... People tell me I'm lucky. I'm definitely not going out of my way to go watch it, though. Just not my thing.

But, more power to him. Kind of like anal prolapse porno... If it makes you money, go for it. I may not be the demographic for it, but if you have that 'talent', use it to get some cash before it dries up....
