Has Steam always charged sales tax?

Or is that something new? I've never noticed it before, but honestly, I never really paid attention.
 
I think it depends on what state you're in. Like Newegg charges sales tax for California, Tennessee, and New Jersey.

If the company has a presence in that state then they have to collect sales tax for sales made in that state.
 
Some states have been passing laws on collecting sales tax from digital sales regardless on whether or not the company has a presence there, and the company must comply to continue selling goods in that state. Illinois is the most recent IIRC, adding sales tax to Steam sales in June this year.
 
I thought Steam only charges sales tax if you live in Washington state
 
In Nebraska you self report what you bought online so they can charge you a sales tax when you file. So no one ever buys anything online in Nebraska.
 
It always has in Washington, since they are located here.

Some states are passing laws requiring businesses that sell to their residents to provide tax regardless of physical location of the business.
