Please, please, please don't screw this up. I'm a big fan of the Borderlands franchise but I'm not sure how this would work as a movie. Fingers crossed! Thanks to cageymaru and everyone else for the heads up.

“Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force in the global marketplace with an incredible portfolio of brands; our partners at Gearbox have pioneered and cultivated an iconic property; and Avi and Ari Arad are two of the most successful producers of action franchises,” Take-Two Interactive Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick said. “This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight ‘Borderlands” current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world.”

Lionsgate generally produces good films, but their marketing department is really lacking. But the Arads, themselves, have a mixed history. I have cautious optimism. We'll see who they choose as director and writer(s).

Looked up the Arads filmography on wikipedia. I have no hope.

Producers so they are mostly throwing the money at it. I'll judge more when we see the director.

If they steal from the Telltale game that could work. That is great and has a Firefly-ish feel to it.

Yeah! Uwe Boll has been tapped to direct the film. I'm feeling good about this.

Are there any good movies that were based off of a video game? (Honest question, I am curious.)

I thought Silent Hill was decent. The first Resident Evil wasn't complete garbage either, especially when you consider how corny the writing of the game was.

I thought the first Mortal Kombat was half decent, other than that,no. It's a shame, because there's a lot of potential in some games if done right,I'd love to see something done with the STALKER or Fallout franchises, but they'd probably just mess it up.

Sigh....this is going to be another Super Marios Brothers The movie.

Not a single one according to Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_video_games

All those thetrical releases were less the 50% rotten rating.

But there my be some hope in the future: five of the films from the last decade were made by Uwe Boll, and I doubt anyone will give him another job.
From that I list I enjoyed:
  • Mortal Kombat
  • Final Fantasy: Spirits Within
  • Resident Evil (The whole series is a guilty pleasure of mine ...)
  • Doom (Entertaining for what it was, even though it had nothing to do with the video games.)
  • Silent Hill (Best movie based on a video game to be made so far, in my opinion.)
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Jake Gyllenhaal cast as the Prince, notwithstanding...)
  • Need for Speed (Right up to the ending, anyway. Gives the finger to the F&F series with all the driving scenes being real. Best driving film regardless of the name released in the last decade, in my opinion.)
Most other films on that list I could take it or leave it. Despite the butchering of the character, I thought the first Hitman was a decent flick. Everything Uwe Boll has touched is garbage.

I think it is important when going into a film to disassociate it from the source material so you can judge the film itself on its own merits. You may find yourself enjoying them more that way. Afterward, you can bitch and complain all you want as you pick apart the issues with the liberties taken on the source material. I do the same thing with films based on books.

Hollywood video game to live action movie adaptations are terrible, no exceptions. I fail to see why anyone would have extremely unrealistic hope about that at this point.

A few were already mentioned but I’ll include Wreck-It Ralph. It kind of counts IMO.

People said the same about superhero movies at one time. Proof if you make enough of them one of them is bound to be good. :p

I enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph, but it wasn't a direct adaptation of a game. Same thing with TRON.

As long as it's not directed by Uwe Boll, cast Terry Crews as Mr. Torgue, and get stupidly hot actresses to play any Siren characters, I'll give it a watch.
