Just looking for my best bet here. The 6950 died last weekend so I'm looking for a replacement. Can't replace the pc at this time best bet bang for buck with either brand?

Get a used 290x for around 200-220 from forums or buy a 290 for 229 brand new.

Probably the best advice there if you're looking for absolute best performance in that range and are willing to buy used. On the Nvidia side, the 970 won't get down that low even used, and the 960 is underwhelming compared to the 290/X.

I am still running the 290 on my eyefinity machine and I love the performance for the price.

Could always look at used. There is a 7970 in the For Sale / Trade forum right now for $125.

you can get a 380 for around that price. Newegg had the 380 at a discounted $175 last week. It's back up to $219 now.

Just a suggestion: What is wrong with the 6950? Do you think you could dismantle and bake it in the oven to reflow the solder?

If you do that you could always sell it towards getting a new card or have a backup or something.

I wouldn't buy an oven card if I knew it had been baked. I've baked a card back to life, but that was for my own personal use. I wouldn't have tried to pass it off as a good card.

i had a 6970, tried baking it, was not successful. I picked up a 280x. That actually fits more in the price range op was looking for

If you jump from a 6950 to a 290x then that would be a life changing event as the performance is like 7950 Crossfire or HD7990 on a single card and the holy grail dream of gamers.

at that price point a 960gtx is as good as you can go (new). I personally have the 4gb version and am very satisfied with it for 1080p gaming.

Yeah, the performance is the same as the R9 380 when both cards are overclocked:

And you will probably be satisfied with the 2GB model, which is under $200 right now (around $160 after rebate).

And the power consumption is 70w lower than the 380, so I always recommend the GTX 960. It gets a lot less love than it deserves on these boards.

I upgraded from an GTX 460 to mine, and performance is doubled!

I picked up the EVGA 4gb model for $200 after rebate a month ago, upgraded from an old 560TI, night an day difference, really happy with the card.

I also have to say EVGA once again showed how to treat a customer, when I registered the card I bought at newegg with them I got a %50 off coupon for PSUs and Mice through their siteas a thank you for buying one of their products, so I got a 850G2 PSU for $80, I know that isnt really half the cost of what I would have paid, but its still a great price for a good PSU.

I have seen plenty of 280s and 780's on craigslists for that price. Cant go wrong with either.
