I recently got a Asus Z170 Maximus Ranger and I had to finally give up my Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty after all these years because the mobo does not have a PCI slot. I'm using onboard now and the sound seems to be OK but there is a high pitch ringing/whining noise on my mic now. People keep complaining about it in Skype/Mumble. Is there anything I can do about it or does this mean I should upgrade to a new PCI-E soundcard?

I'd make sure you have the most recent drivers. Then I'd check if the mic gain is too high, it might be feedback causing the issues? I know Ventrillo gives you the option to do a mic check, playing back what you would sound like. Might be useful to see if you can reproduce the effect for troubleshooting.
