Jumping on the 6700K bandwagon: boxed or OEM?

I'm close to pulling the trigger on the last parts of my new system build, including a shiny new 6700K. My only worry right now is that going for the (cheaper) tray (OEM) version might be a bad idea, due to shorter warranty and possibly other unforeseen consequences.

Am I just being paranoid, or can one make a case for always buying retail (boxed)?

Huh.. I didn't know you could still buy tray processors. That brings me back to the Barton Core days.

Probably depends on the difference in warranty length. Are we talking 30 day warranty as opposed to 3 year warranty?

Usually tray CPU carry 1 year warranty.

This must be Intel's big fuck you to the US. Tray Intel 6700k as well as boxed available in other countries....

Maybe they know the current stepping is fucked up and they're waiting for the next stepping before general U.S. release?

No kidding, lol. OP should figure out how much she can resell them for to desperate US buyers and buy a whole tray if it works in her favor...

Shoot, some people were willing to pay $50 extra at Tiger, except they don't really have any in stock and are just stringing folks along.

I'm going thru the hassle of returning half a Newegg combo myself just to get one.

You can buy OEM tray processors from shopblt. I've bought many T type (low power cpus from them in the past): http://www.shopblt.com/search/order_id=%21ORDERID%21&s_max=25&t_all=1&s_all=i7+6700k It's not really worth if for the 6700K, only ~$4 difference.

They order direct from Intel foundries/factories (non-us countries). which then ship them to shopblt, who then just puts that box in their own box, and ships them to you. My last order from them (low power xeon) came in a cool cpu tray :)

Here in Hungary, the OEM version is about 30% more expensive than boxed. And this is true to all Intel CPUs that are available as both. Retailers say, it's more expensive because it's a small market, and it's a hassle to acquire OEM cpus on a small scale. But back in the PIII/PIV days everyone was buying OEM cpus as they were cheaper like it should be. It only started to shift during the Core2 days, when they became about equal, so people started buying boxed instead.

Both are very much out of stock and the ETAs for the boxed one keep getting pushed back... I know you're saying the procedure is different for the OEM order but given the shortages in Murica it's more than likely it'd just result in a lengthy backorder.
