Fury X can barely keep up with a GTX750 in linux

AMD's Linux drivers still suck? Well, knock me over with a feather. Everyone who runs Linux already knows that.

Pretty much takes them out of any Steam Machines. Not sure that SMs will actually ever happen though.

Some things never change. Honestly, Steam OS has been the first reason AMD's ever had to even try on this front.

they are working on their linux drivers now. I am guessing because vulkan will make it much more worthwhile

They are working less on them now than ever.

And they were ominously quiet about Vulkan during SIGGRAPH, but we'll see. Maybe they'll support it.

*Shrug* Older Open GL API, no big deal. We will have to see what happens through the Vulkan API but, good for those who like Linux and have Nvidia based card. Another good reason to not bother with Linux as my primary OS. :D I want to build a machine just for LInux so I can continue to learn more about it since I have used it on and off for the last 18 years.

I'd like to go Linux for games, but we ain't there yet unfortunately. I'm having to condemn a rig to Windows 10 just did games. :(

Lol yeah, maybe AMD should make their windows driver open source too that way it's never their fault.

That would actually be a great idea. All software should be free and open so that the community can help to improve it.

Radeon drivers are open source. If they suck it's our fault and our problem, not AMD's. This is a good thing, because it gives us control.

Nobody is stopping you from contributing: http://www.x.org/wiki/radeon/, http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/, http://cgit.freedesktop.org/?s=idle

I'm not going to spend $400 for a GPU and then write my own drivers.

What Intel and AMD have done with open-source drivers is certainly commendable, but it doesn't absolve them of their responsibility to provide the best possible end-user experience for their customers. Shirking their responsibility to a third party is not acceptable.

If AMD's position is that their product sucks on Linux because it's "our fault" (the customers' fault), then they don't deserve a dime.

However I suspect this is not simply a Linux driver problem, but rather a cross-platform OpenGL problem for them.

Who in their right mind runs Linux to play games? Probably worse than running Mac OS X for games.

I do. And it's a lot better than OS X. By a wide margin. In certain cases it's better than Windows.

I'm talking about on nvidia GPUs, of course.

There was a beginning to everything, back in 2006-2007 when I was using linux for work nvidia drivers were terrible. The only reason I went to WMWare is that i didn'tt have to install nvidia drivers then :-D

Anyway Linux drivers are the least of AMD's problems right now.

Fury X is new. My 290x was horrible until a few driver revisions. AMD seems to do this at launch. A year after they release the card, the drivers catch up to the hardware.

AMD drivers never have been good in Linux. I'm hoping once SteamOS launches officially with the Steam Boxen, AMD will be able to get some real gpu drivers out for linux.

Well I think most people wouldn't like a video card made by a company that didn't at least provide some code for drivers. So I agree there. That said, you don't start from scratch on drivers, it's an active collaborative community process. You might enjoy working on amdgpu (kernel) or mesa & radeonsi (opengl) in your free time. We are computer enthusiasts after all.

And if SteamOS picks up Vulkan, AMD will whip the 970 with a 4950.

Notice how all GPUs do much worse on Linux than Windows, even from 2 years ago:

http://us.hardware.info/reviews/496...eview-titan-killer!-dirt-showdown---1920x1080

And those were with 4x AA, not sure what AA was used in the Linux benchmark, if any.

All the Nvidia cards lost 25+ fps going from high->Ultra and AMD only went down ~5fps. Obviously some major issues from both vendors or the game itself (mentions of crashing on load from both as well).

The 760 went from 109 -> 59 going from High->Ultra!

Sounds like Linux sucks for gaming if its much worse than the Windows experience from 2 years ago.

I'll care about this when I want to game on Linux.

In other words, never (or at least not during the relevant lifetime of the Fury X).

i dont see Vulkan going any where on PC really with NV or AMD

Apple isnt supporting it and Windows has Direct X12

That's probably true. It appears it will be an Android / Linux only thing. NVIDIA seems to be pushing it though (somewhat surprising) as well as the mobile guys (Qualcomm and IT).

Also it's possible that there will be a dev studio that primarily focuses on Vulkan, like Valve or whatever. But Valve doesn't even make games anymore, so heh.

I'd like to go Linux for games, but we ain't there yet unfortunately. I'm having to condemn a rig to Windows 10 just did games. :(

It has been almost 20 years since I first heard this and it hasn't gotten much better in that time frame. Unless there is a serious push I doubt were going to see this anytime soon

For the most part, Linux isn't really designed for the desktop market, by which I mean, optimised for desktop use.

I did go Windows 10 for my gaming machine (which is still awaiting its graphics card) but that's only because I didn't want to spend yet another wad of cash on a Windows 7 license. Despite having been a regular Linux kernel downloader since the early ‘90‘s, I was never tempted to install Linux for my gaming needs (though Linux is happily running my Murmur voice server in the other room).

The fact that FuryX doesn't do well on Linux doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'd rather AMD focus the R&D and support resources where it counts which is the Windows ecosystem.

that's OK NVidia can barely keep up with AMD on DX12....

I guess you couldn't resist the attempt at a jab so that the Red Team would look good in comparison but it really doesn't.

It is going to become the standard Linux graphics API, at least according to some:

Being the Android API means that all game engines which target Android will have Vulkan support.

Funny how instead of refuting what I said you restort to name calling.

Its a lot slower than the windows version from 2-3 years ago, and even Nvidia cards take a massive hit when you turn up the IQ.

With this being the latest port by Virtual Programming using eON, which is quite controversial with the Linux gaming community given the poor quality of some of their initial ports in the past

I'd say having half the FPS of windows to still be poor quality port.

The developers also recommend a Core i7 ...8gb of ram

Funny the windows version recommends 4gb of ram, guess higher overhead in Linux?

but when trying to run the game at 3840 x 2160, the XML configuration file would be reset by the game and fallback to running at 1280 x 800

Wow that sounds great! I love my resolution resetting, what a wonder freature on Linux.

So they used 2xMSAA, while I tests I showed from 2 years ago used 4xMSAA and were still quite a bit faster.

Please show me all the pros of Linux gaming from the article again?

Linux is likely NEVER going to take over the market from Microsoft in gaming.

Why? Because there's no one body in charge of the systems involved in gaming on Linux.

That and the Linux dev tree won't EVER compromise the OS the way Windows is compromised, just to eke out a few extra FPS.

Sure, someone could conceivably fork Linux or build a distro that allows for such compromises in system stability and security.

But in the end, once interest in the project wanes, it dies. And little to nothing is retained in the main tree.

980ti cant keep up with a 290x from amd in dx12 I guess thats more important for gaming?
:D

so itll get used in 3 things ....

so like i said its not going any where on the desktop

I bet we'll see it used on desktop as well, but it won't look anything like these tests which are using a wrapper (eON) which has been known to have terrible amd performance and not natively coded.

I didn't call you a fool. I said that you made yourself look like one. I'm not going to hold your hand on this one. Let me ask you this: When Batman: Arkham Knight was released on PC as a trainwreck, did you blame it on Windows? Or did you think maybe there was some other cause?

Think this one through now. There may be a parallel here.

In terms of just the OS stack, Linux is faster than Windows for games. That's been shown repeatedly and frequently. In terms of drivers it's a bit more complicated. NVIDIA is pretty much identical on both; AMD and Intel typically range from a bit slower to a lot slower, though AMD used to be just as good as well.

Sure, someone could conceivably fork Linux or build a distro that allows for such compromises in system stability and security.

Yeah... someone like... ohhh, I don't know... Valve. :D But yeah... it's Valve. :(

You have to show proof not me. You are claiming that Linux is better than windows, but I've yet to see any proof of that and the Article sure as hell proved otherwise.

Lets take a look at another game: Shadow of Mordor:

embed.php

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=mordor-win10-linux&num=2

Shadow of Mordor gets ~50% the fps of Windows.

Also there is an updated version of this article:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=dirt-2-linux&num=2

When they turned on MSAA @ 8x the FPS heavily dropped on Nvidia cards and the AMD ones are still hanging out @ 60-65fps, so obviously problems on both side for drivers.

I don't think linux has that many native games. But will change in a couple of years anyway.
