Both versions of MGS V coming to Steam.

Somewhat mystifying that a game like this doesn't have a preload. That's going to be a bitch when this hits.

I wonder what holds developers back from doing a preload, even if it's just the day before. Even if you wanted to work until the last minute, presumably the dev could just issue a day one patch (without forcing everyone to download the full 20+ gigs the moment of release). I wonder if Valve charges them for it.

I can't imagine Valve charging for something like that, though I could be wrong. When even indie early access titles can afford to have their games distributed and updated frequently, it would seem strange that a pre-load would cost more. In fact, it seems logical that if anything, Valve should charge for high-storage, highly anticipated title releases that do NOT pre-load, as it is more likely that the bandwidth and server demands would be much higher to deal with the 'spike' of launch day loading (not to mention the costs of having to have staff on call to deal with issues, even more so than usual). as opposed to a gradual rollout of pre-loading.

technically the game unlocks at New Zealand Time which is 5 hours earlier...so I guess that can be considered somewhat of a pre-load period

Friend and I will be picking this game up. CJS Keys has it for $40 via Steam.

Why buy from a grey market site when you can get it for the same price or cheaper buying Nvidia codes?

Been purchasing from that site since 2011 and never had a problem but still that's a good idea to look for someone selling the NVIDIA codes.

Starting Sunday Greg Miller of Kinda Funny (formerly of IGN) will be putting up videos every weekday for two weeks. He's said that nothing beyond mission 5 will be spoiled and he won't be putting up the opening of the game as the first video. Additionally, Robert Peeler was there when it was recorded and he said they did their best to avoid story spoilers.

Man, I love it when a game I've been anticipating actually delivers...this looks good so far.

Reviews are pouring in

when the embargo lifts early it usually means a great game...DA: Inquisition was the last major game where review embargo's lifted 1 week before release...looks like a tight race for GOTY- Witcher 3, Phantom Pain, Bloodborne, Arkham Knight (if the PC release gets polished up)

Arkham Knight PS4 reviews also were released early and got amazing scores across the board...and then the PC version came out :D ...the PC version of Phantom Pain should be even better as far as graphics and performance as long as they didn't screw it up...judging by performance of the Ground Zeroes prequel I'm confident that Phantom Pain will be amazing on PC

Damn! Good to see people are enjoying it. Like others have said... reviews a week early is a sign of a quality game. Nothing to hide. It was the same story with Witcher 3.

This has been a great year for games, we haven't even gotten to Fallout 4 or Xcom 2.

Each studio handles there timings different.. This really doesn't mean anything.. And I wouldnt exactly call Witcher 3 a super quality game. Lots of bugs.. Missing features.. Game has had more patches then Unity lol.

Anyways got my copy of MGS5.. Can't wait to play this.

Missing features? What was missing?

Also the patches were very very quick, quicker then most studioes that take weeks/months to get one patch out, they were putting out patches almost weekly after release, plus all the free dlc, etc.

Got my copy ready...still haven't finished Ground Zeroes but I was impressed with the PC port quality there.

For anyone that has read the reviews, which would you recommend on the basis of being the most spoiler free?

I've only read Destructoid's and Gamespot's and form those two I'd say DToid. Gamespot gets a little heavy handed talking about themes. They try to be vague but I'm not fond of how they discuss some stuff.

Also: For those of you avoiding spoilers do NOT watch the videos KindaFunny is putting up. There is some good gameplay stuff in the first video but they watch the cutscenes and did listen to one of the cassettes in the video.

Did we know MGO was delayed for consoles as well?
One of the reviews say it was delayed till October 6.

Yep. They announced that the same time they announced the PC version moving to Sept 1st and PC MGO being delayed until Jan.

Witcher 3 is a great game but let's be fair there were plenty of bugs...missing features??...how about NG+ or the new movement for Geralt...yes they are quick to release patches but there have been tons of patches with later patches breaking things that had to be fixed with the next patch...as far as the free DLC- the vast majority have been cosmetic or just plain useless

I don't really see how you think those were "missing" features, that implies that it's something to be expected int he base game.

When is the last time you played a game that offered different movement options? They added that in post-release because many people brought up how floaty and sloppy the movement felt and issues with the horse. Many other developers would have simply left it be.

NG+, how many people play NG+ ? I feel like this is an area that's much like "Raiding" in mmo's, you have a loud vocal minority while the vast majority of players never do them.

Especially when NG+ doesn't really change anything. The only games I ever felt did justice to NG+ were Dark Souls, where they actually changed bosses, had new loot and secrets you didn't get until reaching NG+.

Most games call NG+ "Difficulty" options and leave it at that. Main difference is the carrying over of equipment/levels.

interesting that although an Nvidia bundle game, The Phantom Pain is not a GameWorks game and won’t feature any of Nvidia's effects libraries...usually all of their bundles involve some sort of Nvidia tech

I snagged a code today in the forums so I'm happy...was cutting it close with the game coming out next week

So stoked for this game. I've played all the mgs games, so expectations are high for this one.

the New Zealand unlock time was a bit confusing because NZ time is almost a full day ahead but if my math is correct that means that the game will unlock for me (EST) on August 31st at 8:00 AM?...is this correct?

That seems to be the case. Unless Peeler was mistaken it looks like that is when it will unlock.

Well, at least someone- it appears to be an employee of an Australian retailer- is willing to acknowledge what Konami is not: That Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, is a Hideo Kojima game.

Konami has been KGB'ing Kojima from its official websites and promotional materials, portending a split that will almost certainly be formalized once MGS5 launches in a little more than a week...fans of the series rightfully find this a little alienating, and some store workers have taken it into their hands to correct the record...

Apparently every mission has a small credits scene that has Kojima's name all over it as well. It's a very Kojima thing to do and would probably be there anyway but now it feels like a giant "fuck you" to Konami.

from one of the reviews I read today...looks like they are trying to make Phantom Pain more accessible to newcomers...

"the sprawling story makes it intimidating for newcomers...Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is different; it puts the saga of Big Boss and his sons in the background, emphasizing dynamic gameplay and a player-directed approach to progression...the story is still important, but it isn’t the driving force in this installment...Kojima Productions’ decision to offload key story information into optional audio logs means that major developments can occur without necessary context, only letting you learn more about them after the fact"
