Skylake/Z170 finally available

Been there a while, I posted this on Wednesday in another thread (08-12-2015, 06:09 PM):

NCIX might just be heavily backordered now, as soon as people see they can pre order anywhere they tend to pile up. Tiger had a fake in stock label and later notified people of their ETA but it was still within late August, not October...

I certainly hope supply isn't that scarce for several months, what a bummer that'd be. Newegg and Amazon still haven't had it in stock or for pre-order (unless you count gouge happy merchants), you gotta figure they'll get some of the largest shipments.

Yes, you are right and I apologize. There are so many threads on Skylake delays here and on other forums that my old addled brain is finding it difficult to keep up. I suspect (with no evidence other than my own deep distrust and disappointment at two back to back Intel paper/vapor launches) that Aug/Sep Skylake availability will continue to be a trickle and mass shipments will not hit until Oct. Let's face it (again IMHO) 14nm yields simply have to be horrible and Intel is jumping through hoops to keep this fact from their shareholders to avoid a stock price meltdown. IMHO IMHO and IMHO we're being played here, folks.

Grrr Skylake Shortage
yeah its really nothing we didn't already know, but I want some positive news and this really sets a negative tone.

Oh well my wife wants some new furniture anyway, I can wait on the new PC.

Basically a "fuck you guys we paper launched it and didn't have any shipments ready for the US or Europe".

How about we get some competition in the processor market again? AMD needs to get off their asses and put out some worthwhile chips.

Oh well, time to go 5820k, hit 4.5 ghz and be just as fast if not faster anyways.

Word I miss AMD, used them for almost 10 years.

I have a feeling though that a small batch of 6700ks will be shortly available, but sells out immediately and THEN we se nothing until autumn.

But yeah, a frustrating launch to be sure.

This is where I am at; the 2nd gen boards are better and cheaper, DD4 is way down in price, and a 5820k gets you 90%+ of the performance and two extra cores for DX12.

Even though I complain that EVGA is often missing some features on their middle or low end board I can really appreciate their mentality of small medium large.

ASUS has reached critical mass with their massive selection. How many boards do you really need to have? MSI isnt much better. What is a gaming board when the majority of boards allow overclocks?

The I remember that some of us pay extra to get RAM with blue instead of red so, whatever lol

My blue RAM and Phanteks cooler scoff in your general direction... :p Technically I didn't pay extra, I bought more than I wanted/needed (which I might or might not sell!).

ASUS boards are generally pretty well stratified even if there's some overlap between the mainstream, ROG, and TUF lines... They might've gone over the line with the Z170-A vs the Gaming Pro tho. The difference there seems to come down to aesthetics, USB port/header arrangement, and on board audio.

You could argue that's enough of a difference for some, but they're still within $5 of each other which does indeed cause confusion IMO.

So far I still think the MAXIMUS VIII HERO is the best ASUS board for the money. I would go as far as to say it appears to be better than the Deluxe unless you need wifi, it has support for faster RAM and might have better on board sound.

EVGA lost me when they didnt include a 3c connector on the FTW, Gigabyte is all over the place in cost by including too many things, I think the G1 should be renamed kitchen sink, MSI stupid killer NIC, but otherwise the M7 actually appears to be a good option.

I dont care about colors, though I have considered intentionally trying to make the color of every single component clash just for fun. I already have the ugliest fans so..

Well the ASUS Z170-Deluxe and Maximus VIII Hero from what I'm told clock memory about the same. The ROG offering may "support" higher speeds but as far as I know they've both been capable of DDR4 3600MHz speeds easily. I don't know if they've actually been clocked higher than that at this point or if the Maximus can do better. As for onboard audio, the ROG offering should be better. It has the programmable OP-AMP that the Deluxe lacks.

GIGABYTE isn't just all over the place, they are on the high side of things. Too many of their boards are using PLX chips and Alpine Ridge controllers, The models with the Sound Blaster Core 3D basically have the physical retail card built in. So again all this drives the cost up. Plus I believe many of the GIGABYTE motherboards are Thunderbolt 3.0 certified which is next to useless right now. I haven't been through their whole product stack, but they've got quite a bit going on this generation and I think their ambition to be the best may have clouded their judgment. PLX chips are of little value and they drive the price up. I remember them telling me that most models had them. My immediate question was: "Why?" Lastly on the subject of GIGABYTE motherboards, they are using the Killer NIC as well. I think the entire G1 line uses one more more Killer NIC E2400 controllers.

MSI's made some fairly good decisions this generation. They still use far too many Killer NICs. Their new branding is a bit odd to me. Performance Gaming and Enthusiast Gaming as marketing terms made sense. The "Arsenal" gaming moniker doesn't make a damn bit of sense.

Overall I think I'm having more fun with this generation's moiherboards than I have the past few. They just have more personality this go around and more variance between companies. VRM designs vary a lot, NIC options, color options, etc. are all over the map in some cases.

I agree on Asus. I can't figure out what board to get, because they have so many. Earlier this year I almost bought a new build and I looked at 2 Asus boards and I wasn't sure what the difference was, other than price.

NCIX Canada is even later than these dates. This line wasn't on the page yesterday but has appeared today:

This item is not yet available but you can pre-order this now. We will ship this product shortly after its estimated arrival date of 10/02/2015.

Geez, and I was trying to get the CPU shipped to me for last weekend when it looks like they aren't going to be available until freakin' October! Sheesh!

I'm surprised that this reality is shocking for you. Canadian consumers always get new stuff last, usually when the rest of the world has had its fill. New products that are in demand are front and center on Newegg.com, but frequently don't even exist on Newegg.ca until demand has been satisfied in the US and when they do exist their SKUs are inactive or out of stock. NCIX themselves has had the listing for the 6700k for some time now...on their US site, NCIXUS.com, and as you mentioned, just put it up on their Canadian page very recently.

We usually get the privilege of paying a 20% premium for being treated like dirt...(and this was when the US and Canadian dollars were close to parity with each other).

I find it amazing that as the Canadian dollar weakens, prices for imported items are soaring immediately. When the Canadian dollar was strengthening prices dropped very slowly if at all...;)

i've been using gigabyte boards for more than 10 years now. but compared to asus and msi their integrated fan control is lightyears behind. which is a deal breaker for me, sadly :/

My i7 6700k arrived from France today! The processor was literally just sitting inside the box, outside the protective plastic.

Fuck you Amazon for selling the processor I ordered to someone else and making me wait for the next shipment. Fuck you Intel for making me order from French Amazon in the first place by not stocking NA, and Fuck you DHL for this terrifying treatment of my $400 product.

but how does it overclock?

Still building atm, I'll update in a little bit lol. My Ncase M1 build is going along great. It did boot though, so now its all just putting it together and loading windows. I'm using an H100i GTX, so it should be interesting.

I am assuming you have the EVGA Z170 Stinger? I cant think of any other boards that would fit in that case.

Nice, grats.

Pretty laughable that this CPU is still nowhere to be found in North America but fairly abundant in Europe.

Correct. Really pisses me off that EVGA would charge $200 for an ITX board with no wifi and no internal usb 2.0 ports for my H100i, so I have to run the cable out the back and into the rear I/O. This is why monopolies are bad, children. When you only have one product on the market, they can charge whatever the hell they want.

Not to mention EVGA opted not to support USB3.1

At the same time I doubt I will have a use for USB3.1, even if I did find something useful it will likely be so much more expensive than its 3.0 counterpart I would pass it up.

I still think the FTW and the stinger too for small form factor is a very solid board

Look forward to seeing your results, good luck!

External drives and/or raid arrays? I'd want 3.1 on anything new, but that's also because I don't need to upgrade systems as often, so I'd like to Future proof and 3.1 probably protects you for 5 years (or more).

I agree with you and I will likely get a board that does have 3.1 even though I do not need it, but even if you get a board without, you will be able to get adapters to enable that if you dont have it it native on the board.

True. The only reason for doing it internally is to free up PCIE slots and almost 6 years later, i still have empty slots, so it's probably not a big deal....though I will likely need a PCIE firewire card for my negative scanner, since nobody includes those anymore and I think the card it came with is PCI.

lol nice,

better of getting one of those Sphere PCs from ebay for 780.43 and pulling the CPU, sell the rest

The comments indicate that the seller won't have it in stock until September...I didn't bother going through the check out process to see if that's the case.

Just got my 6700k. Currently have it overclocked to 4,800 Ghz. Very pleased with the speed.

Maybe he's across the pond, or ordered from there, haven't seen any US retailer ship one yet...

I've had a Auto Notify set up at Newegg since they were listed on the site and haven't gotten any notifications yet. Also, my local MC is getting sick of me calling and asking them about the 6700Ks every day to check local stock. No joy yet. I've seen some estimates of stock coming in around the middle of September, from the 7th all the way to the 21st depending on the warehouse.
