Hey there. I have an old C0 i7 920 been stable 3.8 since 2008.

Instead of spending insane amounts on a new build, I heard I can slap a 32nm 6 core beast Xeon in my Rampage II Extreme.

So I am checking eBay, what do I want to get ? Quick "buy it now" ebay prices.

X5650 $100
X5660 $113
X5670 $128
X5680 $195

Please advise. My full system specs:

Silverstone Fortress FT02 case. Amazing airflow and cooling.
Coolermaster V8 Cooler.
Rampage 2 Extreme Mobo
12GB DDR3 12 sticks
ASUS GTX 970
Corsair AX1200
Crucial MX200 256GB SSD x2
WD Red 3TB x2

Running Windows 10

Please advise, which of these Xeons should I get ?

Also, does anyone have one they can send my way for a fair price ?

At today prices, i would again go with a X5675, only because X5675s were released 1 year after tthe X5670s, so you will likely get a less used chip, with perhaps slightly longer life expectancy.

I went with a X5670 for $120 canadian shipped (About $91.5 US)

Good deal ?

I had an old E5520 kicking in my old beater system and recently replaced it with a cheap W3690...definitely worth the upgrade, and fully unlocked as well...;)

Also look at the W3680 and W3690 since you're only running a single cpu. These are the same as the 980x and 990x, but with ECC enabled and the Xeon name.

Bought a 2nd X5675 on ebay last night for $110 US. IMO the X5675 is the sweet spot with price/speed.

You've been here for 7 years, when's the last time you had a cpu break? I've been repairing computers for around 15 years now and I've never seen a bad cpu, except when I was a noob and didn't install a blue core AMD thunderbird hsf properly.

I've been building PC's for for about 12 years and I can say I've seen maybe 2 or 3 dead CPUs in that time. Just this past week I helped a friend confirm his 980X did in fact only have 3/6 cores functional.

you can get an x5679 for $100 shipped on ebay.

This is a very good suggestion for those with boards that can only manage a 175 blck or looking for possibly lower voltage settings...on paper it can do 175 blck with 24 muli for 4200mhz. Those with enthusiast boards can get the 26 multi as well but 24 should make life a bit easier for xeon problem boards.
Just as a comparison mine currently does 22*191 for 4200mhz very easy.

I got my x5650 here on the Forums for $60 (thanks, Wrangler)! Easily got it to 4.2ghz. I would just buy what you can afford, and not worry so much about the binning, as its very rare that you cannot push 4ghz on these babies!

Mmmhm oldie but a goodie. 6core/12 threads. I have a w3550 lga 1366 myself. I've been thinking about same in mine too.

I saw my fair share of faulty CPUs when I worked as on-site warranty repair for Dell computers.

The PIVs were the worst offender. I saw a few that had faulty cache on them. Saw 1-2 DOA, and even saw a dead Athlon 64 chip.

And I have sitting in my drawer my dead i7-920 which I am pretty sure was killed by the motherboard.

I've also seen a few bad laptop Intel chips, one of them had something wrong where stuff would sometimes act funny and it would make bootable CDs/DVDs take 15-45+ minutes to boot. Absolutely everything was replaced in that laptop besides the processor before they had me send it back and send me a replacement laptop.

you can get an x5679 for $100 shipped on ebay.

x5679 is an oem chip and not always supported - it also has a memory controller fixed to run at 1066, as opposed to the 1333 you can normally get on the rest of the 56xx xeon's
