Hello guys,
Here's a quick build for a friend of mine.
This computer will be used for Revit, Autocad, 3dstudiomax and Photoshop.

Intel Core i7-5820K
ASUS X99-A LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 series 32GB (4 x 8GB)
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB
EVGA 220-G2-0850-XR 80 PLUS GOLD 850 W
Crucial MX200 SSD 1TB
WD BLACK 2TB

the harddrives may become more, if the old ones are being re-used.

any opinions on this build?

Things must work and render as smooth and fast as possible.

Thanks.

What case?
When do you plan on building/buying this PC?
What OS?

Oh and you're missing a HSF. Get the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo.

hey Dangman, thanks for the swift reply.

I was thinking a simple $20 local buy case.

Don't really know, but lets keep it as of now and not go on "whats coming out" ...

Current OS is Win7 , will it support 32GB though?

And yes, I had that HSF in cart to but didn't post it, sorry.

Would you have picked the same parts? Mr. Dangman?
Throw me your list.

The reason for asking when you plan to build/buy this computer has more to do with current pricing than it does with "what's coming out" down the road. Prices can change in an instant. So what's a good buy today might not be a good buy tomorrow.

ok but lets act as if i will be buying today...what can you tell me about the rig? is it a good pic or what would you change?

Is the Win7 license Pro or Home? Pro will support 32GB but Home will only support up to 16GB.

Why are you speccing a gaming GPU? Surely a Quadro or FirePro would be more appropriate? And that PSU is overkill. Which monitor does your friend use?

He needs to be looking into workstation GPU's if that is all it will be used for. A gaming GPU won't help him much.

Or consider the Titans if you are looking for something with great Cuda support and a high FP score.

ive read articles and have seen reviews on youtube stating that gaming gpu's are good enough and that there is absolutely no reason to go for a quadro which costs a lot more... which quadro would you recommend?

if the psu is overkill, which one would you recommend.

I was also looking at the 4core 8thread Xeon 3.1ghz and pair it with a h97 and 32gb of ddr3

I was thinking a simple $20 local buy case.
That's a terrible idea. That type of system deserves a better case. I recommend any of these better cases:
$70 - Corsair Graphite Series 230T Black ATX Case
$70 - Corsair Graphite Series 230T Black w/ Window ATX Case
$90 - NZXT Source 530 Full Tower Case
$100 - Thermaltake Core V51 Black ATX Case
$100 - Corsair Carbide Series 500R ATX Case
$100 - Phanteks Enthoo Pro Full Tower Case
$110 - Phanteks Enthoo Pro PH-ES614P_WT White Full Tower Case
$103 - Antec 1100 V2 ATX Case
$110 - NZXT Phantom PHAN-001WT White Full Tower ATX Case
$110 - NZXT Phantom PHAN-001BK Black Full Tower ATX Case
$120 - Corsair Vengeance Series C70 Gunmetal Black ATX Case
$120 - Corsair Obsidian Series 450D ATX Case
$136 - NZXT Phantom 530 Black Full Tower ATX Case
$140 - Corsair Obsidian Series 750D ATX Case
$140 - Corsair Graphite Series 730T ATX Case
$150 - NZXT Phantom 630 White Windowed Full Tower ATX Case
$150 - Phanteks Enthoo Luxe Full Tower Case
$158 - NZXT Phantom 630 Gunmetal Full Tower Case
$170 - Corsair Graphite Series 600T Arctc White Full Tower Case
$180 - Corsair Graphite Series 760T Black Full Tower Case
$180 - Corsair Graphite Series 760T White Full Tower Case
180 - Corsair Graphite 780T Black ATX Full Tower Case
$190 - Corsair Graphite 780T White ATX Full Tower Case
$230 - Phanteks Enthoo Primo Full Tower Case
Don't really know, but lets keep it as of now and not go on "whats coming out" ...
But that doesn't help you all that much.
Current OS is Win7 , will it support 32GB though?
AS SkillZ asked twice already: Which edition of Windows 7 does he have? Is it also 32bit or 64bit?
Would you have picked the same parts? Mr. Dangman?
No, there's some parts that I would change.
Throw me your list.
Not until I clarify when exactly the PC is being built. As noted earlier, it does not help that much to plan build far in advance. At most one month. At best, 1-2 weeks.
ok but lets act as if i will be buying today...what can you tell me about the rig? is it a good pic or what would you change?
Why act like you're buying today?

1. Yes, windows 7 pro 64bit , 32gb will be supported
2. Thanks for the case list
3. I said lets act as if we're building today to give this friend an impression of what is possible as of today,now..not in a month or two.

Well I did a build list for someone earlier today so might as well share it:
$390 - Intel Core i7 5820K CPU
$211 - AsRock X99 Extreme4 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 ATX Motherboard
$170 - Crucial CT4K8G4DFD8213 4 x 8GB DDR4 2133 RAM

The setup is more oriented towards low noise than maximum cooling.

Whats up dangman,

Would that GTX750 suffice ? there is absolutely no need for the GTX 960 etc etc? no need for 4GB , 2 is enough?

why would you choose the older bx100 over the newer mx200 series from crucial?

I think Dangman's recommend is solid.

In the types of applications specified, I doubt anything more than a 2GB 750Ti is worth the expense. Those applications benefit more from CPU and RAM than GPU.

As for the SSDs, the real-world difference between the BX100 and MX200 will be negligible. Might as well score 'em on pricing! :D

If this isn't for a job, yes it would suffice. If this is for a job, then look at the GTX 960 2GB.

The MX200 isn't fast enough or cheap enough to be a worthwhile purchase.

Thanks mate

It will be for a job, business.
If we pick the GTX 960, is it worth it going with the 4GB version for the extra $35?

Might be of interest, I'd also vouch for going with the MX200 over BX100 due to memory brandwith.

FWIW, workstations use ECC memory for reliability. As it's for business you most likely want to factor in the warranty part if something breaks. Can he/she/it do without the computer during RMAs?

Dangman,thanks!
yes money is being made with this system, it is for a business..they need 2 new machines..

so for the i7-5820k build you listed, you would swap the gtx750ti/gtx960 for a quadro k2000? also there is a k2000 and k2200..both 2gb and 4gb they are more or less same price..which one should i pick?

the rest remains the same?

can the 3tb,500gb and 250gb be changed for a single 1tb ssd instead? all the storage isnt needed. a fast single hdd would suffice

Obviously the K2200 if they're the same price.

Yes.

I don't recommend it. I recommended that setup based on optimal performance for work, not for sheer storage space. The 500GB is for the OS and programs, the 250GB is for the scratch disk, and the 3TB is for storage and offloading of projects.
