ASUS North America - ASUS Z170 Motherboards Q&A Thread

Would it be possible to get the MSRP on the boards? I'm interested in the z170 deluxe and z170a, but would like o know if I'm seeing any release window gouging.

EDIT

Also, what kind of LEDs are on 170 deluxe? It seems like the perfect board for me. But I have an all white and black themed build and I would hate to mess that up

Z170-D = $320
Z170-A= $165

Deluxe LEDs are RGB. White is default color. You can turn them off also.

Asus does know how to make amazing looking boards! some of the nicest looking this gen.

My knowledge on motherboard features and configurations is rather low so I'm wondering if this will work: Say I have a Z170 mobo with 20 lanes of PCIe. Could I connect two GPUs running at x8 x8 and a PCIe SSD running at x4 and it would all work no problem? Based on this picture here it seems like I can only do a configuration of x8 x4 x4? http://www.pcper.com/files/review/2015-08-03/08.jpg

Do you have a ETA on Impact?

And regarding the Gene, the gpu will block the m2 slot for most people, or am I missing something? (because it's a pretty big issue)

The M.2 slot is from the PCH PCIe lanes, so you can still have two GPUs running at x8/x8. You are confusing the 16X lanes from the CPU PCIe with the lanes from the PCH.

Separating the PCH lanes from the CPU ones, the chart shows up to x20 from the chipset. Obviously many of those are taken by on-board devices like USB 3.1, etc. Do you know how many are available typically for expansion? I know intel reserves a lot of them for specific things like networking ports and whatever else they have on there.

I ask because I'm also curious about running SLI/CF with a PCIe SSD (I have a Samsung SM951) and still having room for something like a sound card which with my current Z97 setup is... problematic.

Check the board overviews, they have block diagrams.

MicroCenter has the Z170AR for $179.99 (most locations have it in stock right now).

http://www.microcenter.com/product/452551/Z170-AR_LGA_1151_ATX_Intel_Motherboard

Right now, it's the ONLY LGA1151 mobo MicroCenter has.

There is also a Gigabyte board: http://www.microcenter.com/product/452669/GA-Z170XP-SLI_LGA_1151_ATX_Intel_Motherboard

It's tricky to find though, I searched for "Intel 1151"
If you go to motherboards and then click on the socket 1151 boards it will only show the Asus. Their website is light years behind places like Newegg

What's the major difference between Signature and ROG series?

What are the differences between Hero and Ranger? Only thing I found is ASmedia sata controller + two additional sata ports on Hero.

Can you use m.2 pcie mode + 6 sata devices at the same time on Z170-A ?

VRM and that mainly.

I already did of course. According to diagram there doesn't seem to be a conflict but manual says m.2 and sata express are exclusive. It isn't clear if it is so in m.2 sata mode or m.2 pcie mode or both. I'm only interested in the individual 2 sata ports from the sata express connector, not the sata express.

Can you please clarify?

Like i said i want to use m.2 device in pcie mode + 6 standard sata devices. Is it possible?

Awesome board overviews. Looking at grabbing the Z170-A on the 14th.

Thanks!

What's the difference between the -A and the -AR? Couldn't spot a single one looking at the specs or even using your site's comparison tool... Is the AR just like the retail version or something (and why is there a retail version? just so people can't price match it down at Microcenter ands the like? :p ).

I already bought myself a Z170-A btw, should arrive today, just curious... Haven't had an ASUS board since the P45 one for my Q6600 so looking forward it. Hopefully it gets here in one piece, Amazon foolishly decided to combine two different orders for me and the other one included some heavy bathroom/plumbing gear.

What about other countries , will it be available as mobo only? any MSRP?

I don't deal with other regions or know about their schedules - you will need to contact your local ASUS and ask them.

-AR = no onboard VGA (D-SUB) output.

Whats better, the 170 Deluxe or the Hero VIII?

Lots of people say the Hero is the best mobo you can buy... but then the 170 Deluxe is $100 more expensive? Why the high price?

Raja,

Appreciate the work you've done here.

Do the Asus 170 boards have the typical Asus flashing light when they sleep?

Functionally the M.2 slots have to go through the PCH in order for the system's BIOS/Option ROM to handle configurations for it. Other wise you can use a M.2 adapter kit in say the secondary PEG slot, but then you can't boot from it or use it in a "hardware" controlled RAID (AKA FakeRAID.)

.

(Online sales STILL make up a small - if not downright miniscule - percentage of MicroCenter sales - where MicroCenter excels is that retail (and thus no waiting) availability.)

Also, by and large, you are comparing e-tail vs. retail - an e-tailer will almost ALWAYS win (because they have their distributors backing them up - how much actual storefront/walk-in business does Newegg actually do?) If anything, Newegg should be compared to Amazon - not MicroCenter.

If i see this correctly then all Asus mainboards now only support 5.1 audio jack and no 7.1 audio jack like the old mainboards?
