Elite: Dangerous

So, what does this mean for No Man's Sky?

not much?

since they both likely still offer very different gameplay.

atleast from the promo video for elite it looked more like a moon landing on steroids than a fleshed out alien life exploration adventure.

no mans is still a very different game.

just like elite is a very different game from star citizen.

each has their pros and cons, so really it is up to the player to decide what they prefer.

No Mans has a very vibrant and colorful art style with less emphasis on realism, and some interesting wildlife and planet procedural tech. I personally have not paid too much attention to its development since it was a console game, tho recently its pc as well, and the fact in the demo he went to an "unexplored" world and then there were these random "defender" robots on those worlds to protect the wildlife/planet from said player even tho it was supposed to be unexplored which made me go wtf more than anything so.

Elite seems to be going for some more realism in terms of galaxy scale (which poses issues with player interactions because everything is spread out over thousands of light years) and other elements, and planet side landing would likely follow suit in that most planet will be barren, so not really sure what content they are supposed to have other than driving the buggy around.

Star Citizen is more of Hand crafted universe, what you would expect from a classic star wars, or Battlestar Galactica, with clearly designed places of interest, with less focus on quantity (millions of star systems) and more focus on higher detail (100ish star systems) with more localized POI to keep player interactions high enough that you will actually see other players but also still try to convey that the galaxy is large, with the systems them selves feeling more unique that purely procedurally generated.

Each one has issues tho, Elite feels empty, SC is going to take awhile to finish and then getting planet side exploration is going be a big challenge if they want to keep some of that hand crafted feel the rest of the SC universe has and take even longer to do right, and No Mans is just different in its own way.

They are all unique and there is no reason to really pick one or the other unless you just dislike the game play of one of them.

Well said.

I like E: D precisely for that feeling of that vastness of space it provides, at least as well as a computer generated simulation can at this point.

The smaller hand crafted universe seems limiting to me.

Which is why there is more than one choice! Yay! No need for one size fits YOU Soviet Peoples Space Simulator.

They are finally working on landing on planets!!!

Hello, Commanders

Last week, we announced Elite Dangerous: Horizons – another full season of major gameplay expansions for Elite Dangerous, beginning later this year with ‘Planetary Landings’.

I’ve been fascinated by the exploration of space since I was young, and especially with the almost unimaginable scales involved. Going down to the surfaces of planets was a key part of my dreams of exploration, and soon we'll realise that dream in Elite Dangerous.

We're beginning with airless, rocky worlds – places where a great deal of new gameplay can take place. These are planet-sized sandbox environments, with all sorts of things to discover hidden on them. You'll find surface starports, crashed ships, mineral deposits, hidden bases and more.

These worlds are gigantic, and - like the open galaxy - you'll be able to go anywhere. You'll be able to fly over the surface in low orbit and choose your spot to land, you'll be able to venture out in your Surface Recon Vehicle and hurtle across the surface at high speed. You'll be able to sneak around or go in all guns blazing. The nimble SRV is tiny compared to your ship, and is virtually invisible on a long range scanner – ship-based weapons will find it very hard to hold a lock on them, but airborne and ground-based players can explore the same worlds together, so watch the skies!

As I’ve said already, I’ve wanted to do surface landings in Elite Dangerous for quite a while now – and we have been planning how best to do it since the Kickstarter. Elite Dangerous: Horizons is the first stage and a huge step. The quality people expect is, as always, very high, and the team have done a great job hitting that benchmark. These worlds will feel real and meaningfully unique.

Planetary Landings is just the start. Elite Dangerous: Horizons is a full season of content extending into 2016, introducing new features and gameplay in each major expansion. As with Season One, this season of expansions is not just about planet surfaces, but other major features are coming too.

Of course support will continue for Elite Dangerous even outside of Elite Dangerous: Horizons, and we’re keeping the community together. All Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous: Horizons players will share the same galaxy together and you’ll retain all your progress whenever you choose to join our new season of expansions.

We’re committed to seeing Elite Dangerous grow the right way, and we hope you’ll join us planetside as we embark upon the exploration of our galaxy’s undiscovered worlds together. We have a great team, and I believe Elite Dangerous: Horizons will bring players closer than ever to the dream of touching other worlds.

Thank you for playing, and Right On, Commander!

David Braben

I will be back in the game once this is implemented. Even if there's nothing to do on the planet other than fly around and explore, I'm all for it.

Elite Dangerous is on sale for 26.99 on steam right now. Just ordered it, then saw the kind of entry level hotas I was looking at on Amazon went down in price as well. So I ordered this as well.

I've seen people with some form of voice command add-on, which I believe they have to buy. How much does that cost?

I'm a supporter of "that other space sim", but I saw this deal and picked it up. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

Probably http://voiceattack.com/purchase.aspx
It's a whopping $8, and worth so much more.

True words. Get it. Train your PC to recognize your voice, and enjoy! It's the best $8 I've even spent on my PCs.

I was tempted, but it seems stupid with Horizon coming at the end of the year, which will only be available for $60 (and include all the original game content).

So

Apparently

I went to login to Frontier to sync my steam since I bought Elite.....

Apparently, back in August of 2014, I pre-bought it..... yeah.... so I've had this game, almost a year and apparently never knew.

I bought this game last weekend via STEAM sale = instant snooze-fest...
You need a full-on flight controller setup & hours of tutorials. :(

Are there any space exploration games w/ great graphics where I am not bound by "game rules" to BE A PIRATE! or MINE 4 RESOURCES or BE A BOUNTY HUNTER or OTHER BULLSHIT?

I just want to explore the universe in a bad-ass space ship & see the sights...

PS: I already have Universe Sandbox - I want to fly around tho...

I've been flying in Elite Dangerous for close to a year now, and have never considered it a snooze-fest, nor have I ever felt like I was bound to a set of specific roles or rules. Granted, having a HOTAS certainly adds a lot to the control aspects of the game, but once you really get into it and give it a chance I think you'll be happier about your purchase.

I've absolutely loved the exploration aspect of it, and have been credited with hundreds of first discoveries that nobody else had ever seen or been to before in game. The visuals are amazing, and if you enjoy the trading or pew-pew aspect then you can get into those as well. You don't have to do anything like the powerplay or upcoming CQC stuff at all, if you don't want to.

One other suggestion besides the upcoming No Man's Sky. Check out Space Engine. It's 100% space exploration/simulation.

you can do that in Elite just pick up some thing like Adder or Cobra and go exploring

I found a great way to upgrade your ship fast, is find some Low or High Intensity Conflict Zones, scan for outlaws, make sure there are friendly "cops" around, and go crazy. If you start taking damage, frame shift out. There's good money to be made that way. If you can pick up a bounty mission for the system you're in, that will increase your income significantly.

I got the Viper and upgraded it fully in just a few hours doing that.

Hell, even trolling Resource Collection sites for wanteds will yield 125-200K/hour if you play smart and don't miss / accidentally shoot cops. And you can steal kills from cop NPCs as long as you get the killing batch of shots in.

damn, did they nerf that? I was doing 1mil/hour farming NPCs before I got fed up trying to save for that anaconda.

The Wings Update nerfed it a little when NPC-wanted formed wings. But it still works. It's just not as efficient. The biggest hazard wasn't getting killed by wanteds, but by having dumb-ass cop NPCs fly in front of you taking your fire. And now three cop Vipers are chasing you.

Or ramming you.

Any of you guys still playing?

The CQC arena is awesome. Small, fast ships in a small(ish) arena with little cut-throughs etc. in space stations and between asteroids. Really rewards fancy flying.

Can't wait for the Horizons update.

I will be playing as soon as the Horizons update is ready. I bought E: D a while back, but returned it because a friend that was going to play with me didn't. I've since decided that I liked it anyway though, so will pick it up again soon. At this point I may as well get the bundled version though.

I play it quite often, and have been loving a lot of the Community Goals (CG's) that have been established recently. Making decent money from them too, while I build up enough to A-Spec my Anaconda. Also have a Python, Clipper, and several other ships that I hardly even use anymore unless I need a taxi.

As a member of the Hutton Orbital Truckers, my son was one of the winners of a real life Hutton Mug, and I'm hoping that I earned one as well with this last metals CG at Kaushpoos. Should know something by the end of this weekend!

Still playing, still moving outward.

Every update seems to get a nice fidelity bump in the graphics.
