Whelp. I couldn't have imagined that Apple would have another Maps-level disaster on their hands.

Longtime Apple watcher Jim Dalrymple wrote about his experiences last week, saying that the Apple Music app on his phone deleted more than 4,000 songs after presenting a bunch of confusing options that were hard to override.

They did royally mess up the Music app in the process of hammering the subscription service into it. The simple act of shuffling a playlist is now a genuinely unintuitive thing. It's especially frustrating when I have my iPhone in my armband at the gym, because the interface is now much smaller and requires tapping things on opposite ends of the screen.

They -really- should have left the Music app alone and just did a separate streaming app.

Small screen and iTunes is why I moved away from apple in the first place. I still cant stand itunes and I honestly find apples software frustrating and lacking.

Yeah apple music really is terrible. I'm never going to pay for this, it's really pathetic versus Spotify. I've tried all the major streaming options and Spotify is clearly the best IMO

Hard to believe there are people bashing Apple products in the forms here, I've been wanting a day and I love it. Much better than Spotify and Pandora.

No edit button... I have been using it since launch day is what I meant to say, not whatever the hell I said up there

Why? Do you really think Apple products are perfect?

Yeah, some people dislike Apple as a whole but there are plenty of us who simply prefer the alternatives.

Me, I consider iPhones weak compared to the top Android phones (love my Nexus 6), I don't want to be part of the IOS lockdown (while I'm currently running stock Android 5.1.1 I have many options if I want to run something different), and I don't particularly value visual style in my electronic devices (the N6 isn't ugly but it ain't pretty either). Price is a factor, too. My 32GB N6 was much cheaper than the 16 GB iPhone 6+.

I use Google Play Music and love it. I particularly like the ridiculous number of "radio stations" they've added over the past year. The people curating the stations/playlists for my preferred music genres are very good. :)

This guy had an iTunes Match problem, not so much a Apple Music problem...

I really enjoy Apple Music. Honestly, it's biggest selling feature for me is the lack of social networking. I absolutely abhor how Spotify is so social network oriented. I don't care what my friends are listening. All I want are great curated playlists to discover artists, and that is exactly what Apple Music gives me.

It takes what? 10 seconds to completely disable all social network options in the Spotify preferences pane?

Honestly I thought it was a single button? "never post my activity to facebook" or something.

The fact that social networking is even integrated at all into the app is a huge turn off for me. I'm completely against social networking and hate it when its baked into apps.

Plus, Spotify doesn't work for me in the country I'm in. So, there's that as well. Apple Music is the only service that's available in my country.

Well I think this now makes sense why you are hitching about Spotify, you've never used it. Spotify makes almost zero attempt to push anyone into social anything, you need to go looking for the social features, no one really birches about it.

That's not really accurate.

Spotify is reliant on social networking to its core. The entire premise is based on people in various networks sharing and curating for one another.

Now, if you don't want any of that, then you can just use it as a streaming app. But that's not really the point of spotify. Spotify doesn't even create personal playlists like Pandora or Apple Music. If you want a streaming music app that generates playlists based on your own personal music tastes then you need to use Pandora or Apple Music.

This is exactly my point. Spotify doesn't force anyone to use its social networking features, but it does heavily promote it. I don't desire or need social networking features. I don't want to go through the hassle of finding someone with similar tastes in music to me.

What I want is to open an app, hit play, and let it stream music that it thinks I'll like. The only interaction I want is a like and dislike button. I want the most minimalist music radio possible.

I really don't understand the love for Spotify. It seems that people love it... but I honestly don't know why. What exactly does it do better than Apple?

Spotify is so concerned about 'Following' playlists. I don't care what's popular. I want to listen to music that I like, not what 1,347,584 people like. I don't understand how this is better or why its touted as a feature.

Same here. I haaaaaaaaaate iTunes on PC. I hate it so much that I really haven't updated my iPod in uh...six or seven years.

How?

I didn't even know about that aspect of it until reading about it, checked settings and everything is turned off by default on my install and app...Not something I would call "core". It also makes playlists for me based on what I have listened to and added....So not sure how it doesn't make playlists for you when that is what it does...

I have had Spotify for some time now and have premium service. Tried all the other choices before it and had Pandora and Spotify subs together for a while and saw how much better Spotify was and had more/better content, as well as skipping and playing music when and how I wanted. It is not perfect, but I have found it far better than the other choices, I have not tried out Apple music yet, but will sometime soon to see how it works and if it is worth dropping Spotify for it, however from what I have read its not, but being new I am waiting for them to work out the "bugs" before paying for the service.

I explained how in the post you quoted.

Spotify doesn't create lists for you, you create them yourself. That is not how Pandora or Apple Music work, which both create playlists based on algorithms that try to match you up with music you should like.

Those apps expose you to new music.

The way Spotify exposes you to new music is through the social networking features. Don't confuse social networking (friends, curators, and sharing) with social media (twitter, Facebook, etc.).The social media features are turned off by default, and you have to subscribe to other users' lists (they aren't turned "off" by default, you're thinking of the social media features) but then you're basically using it as a glorified digital iPod. Why bother paying a subscription for that when you can get the same thing for free via Google Music? You're severely limiting the capabilities of the service by not using the social networking features that are the distinguishing (core functionality) features of the service from other streaming services.

I'm also confused how anyone could possibly miss the social features of the service given that you actually have to dig through several menu layers before getting to your own music. It's even at the bottom of the list of ways to play music on my iPhone and it's halfway down on the computer's Spotify app.

Spotify is the only service I use because I prefer the social networking features to the algorithms of both Pandora and Apple Music. When I just want to hear the radio, however, I use Apple Radio.

But don't try to drag me into an argument because you think I don't use the service, lol

An FYI for using Spotify: Though I can't remember the name of the one I used (I switched to Google's service quite a while ago), there was a great Spotify plug-in I that worked with Last.fm to create playlists based on songs, just like playing "radio" based on a song from one of the various services. One of the criteria for building the playlist was total time, so you could have it build an 8-hour playlist with no repeats. Pretty great.
