If all I use the phone for is:

1. Making Calls
2. Sending Email
3. Sending Text
4. Surfing the Web
5. Taking Pictures

Is 1GB enough for this? I do not play any games at all on the phone. I also have a 32GB SD card that I can pop in.

Thanks

I would lean toward no. 1GB is low for a modern Android phones, development is going to continue being towards the average hardware specs. You don't want to start off on the wrong end of the spec curve, regardless of how little you think you will do with the phone. Google is going to keep pushing out app and services updates which will keep eating more and more RAM.

OK. Of course I need a phone now, and when you go to order the 2GB of the Moto G 2015 its already back ordered like 3-4 weeks :-(

Makes sense, the cost increase for the 2GB model is fairly small, and the phone comes with double the storage on top of the extra RAM. My mom has. Moto G coming in Wednesday and even she got the 2GB model.

The 1GB/8GB model seems destined for prepaid carriers like Virgin and Boost Mobile and people that just absolutely want cheap things.

I would actually say 1gb is fine. Even if you are doing everything you listed above at the same time, Android will manage your resources well enough to handle it all.

If you have to switch between apps and/or browser tabs it'll more likely to reload with only 1GB DRAM. For example, if you have multiple browser tabs where you have to refer to and copy inbetween or switch between email and maps it'll more likely reload and you'll lose your place or whatever you were writing/commenting. I'd pay the additional $40 and get the 2GB DRAM/16GB storage option plus it's more future proof for future OS updates.

I'd like to get the 2GB, problem is its already back ordered 3-4 weeks. I wish I could wait that long.

This is what everyone said when phones went from 512MB to 1GB RAM as well. Don't worry about it, Android will do the right thing and use less resources with some updates!

Now those phones perform like potatoes with screens :)

I got the 2GB model. But my estimated ship date is Aug 25th :-( Hopefully it gets here sooner....

Considering it's only a 20% price increase (on an already cheap device) for 16/2 GB, it seems ridiculous not to spring for that unless buying one is urgent and needs to be done locally.

For the OP's use cases I think 1GB is enough based on what I've experienced on devices like his: trough my family, my friends, and my co-workers. However, if he steps outside those use cases in the slightest it's very painful without that 2GB or 3GB or RAM.

Find yourself a Nexus 5. Probably just as cheap, better screen, faster and more ram. Almost two years old and still a better phone overall.

nexus 5:
+screen
+faster?
+/~ RAM

moto g 3rdgen:
+battery
+microSD
+camera
+FM Radio

up to you... If i needed a phone right now, i'd choose moto g (have nexus 5)

Have last year's moto g lte with 8GB+32GB SD card, and in my experience the 1GB limit so far only seems to be hit on bigger, bloated games such as Hearthstone which looks really badly coded to begin with.

That being said, I'd wait and go for the 2GB model at that price cause... Why not?
