If you want to play solitaire on Windows 10 without ads, you'd better be prepared to cough up some cash.

You can make the ads go away, but, as you may have guessed, it'll cost you, and not just once: The Microsoft Solitaire Collection Premium Edition is effectively a subscription service that goes for $1.50 a month, or $10 for a year. The Premium version of the game does away with ads, and also offers more coins for completing "Daily Challenges," and a boost when you play TriPeaks or Pyramid.

And that's why I'm sticking with Windows 8.1, not a fan of the whole paying to remove ads thing. And if this is just a sign of more things to come with Windows 10...yeah, no thanks.

While not a big deal to me for Solitaire (can't remember the last time I played it) but I do not like where this could be heading. They may start putting ads in other places that will be intrusive. Most of us here want a nice clean running OS with only the things that we want/need to run.

Now THAT's FUCKED UP.

Pay to remove ads on Solitaire? Where's the value? None to be found.

Carry a deck of cards. It's cheaper.

I think on the phone it has given you ads in the form of banners. Which a lot of people are use to seeing banner ads on free games so that isn't anything new. But having actual video ads is going a little too far. Especially for something like this.

Guess this is how they make up the money lost by giving away free upgrades.

MS is taking a different direction with the rollout of W10. It's like the printer companies could afford to give you a printer free, just to sell you the ink for printing. Welcome to the new MS, where the operating system and updates are free, but anything else will cost you. I've seen this coming for a long time.

Why is it that big companies are filled with assholes pushing stupid shit that nobody wants to try to squeeze a few more pennies out of people. How about they just deliver good products that people want to buy. This makes me think a boycott of Win 10 is in order to tell them we don't want adware in our OSes but I think its already to late for that. I can't believe they even went to subscription also. Charging for something that has been free for the last 20 years is bad enough but making that fee a subscription is kind of mind blowing. I think I will find an alternative for those like my mom that love solitaire and just refer them all to that instead and tell them not to sub the built in one. Not sure what else to do besides that. Maybe if it flops they will make it free with out ads again.

The old version of Solitaire from WinXP was a standalone .exe file. It should run just fine under Win10 I would think :D

That's the Solitaire app, not built into Windows, right? Still blows goats, though...

Windows as a service? Maybe not yet. But Solitaire as a service... that's here!

i dont play solitare but it still feels like some sort of sick joke. who knows what else they have done, especially with their stupid browser

waiting for some antispyware apps or patch before i'm willing to switch over

...Microsoft operating systems with Windows 10 as a freemium game that requires a monthly fee to get rid of ads and earn in-game currency...

Holy f-balls, in game solitaire currency?!?! Get your Solitaire DLC today!

If this is the future of Windows, I better start to either look into Linux, or just get a mac.

Solitaire is what I play when my internet is down due to a storm or just not available. What the hell good is ads to me then when the link can't do anything? Are they going to make SOLITAIRE online only?

It's pretty sad when I have to start configuring my firewall to keep my OS at bay....

Really, it was in 8 as well? That's ewwy.

Not that I play windows solitaire anymore. Last I play was back in the XP days, where everything wasn't all prettied up. It was faster, and I got hella good times. 45 seconds (or was 47) bitches! TOP THAT!

According to this page: http://lifehacker.com/5963542/remove-ads-from-windows-8-apps

"Olsn, writing at Indiegamr, explains how you can remove those ads from your Windows 8 apps, and the process is actually fairly simple. Each ad-supported app has a hidden folder with the ad data in it, and all you need to do is take ownership of the folder, fire up your favorite text or code editor and make some small changes, and the ads will either be hidden or gone entirely."

You can get the solitaire pack from the app store.

And if you want to play the old Windows solitaire games, it's a TRIVIAL 2 or 3 file copy from an old system to a new one. Takes about 30 seconds with a usb drive to get the game files. Then you have them forever. Put them on any Win 7, Win 8, Win 10 machine you want.

the ads help you guys not be alone... at least you now have a friend to watch you play.

Wait till ads start showing up on your desktop. Then have to pay to remove them.

Just block the ad server with your firewall.
Problem solved.

How does that work with say Hulu?

It entirely depends on how the turds at Microsoft coded it. You may be stuck with blank screen interruptions, or a Solitaire game that doesn't work and errors out with just trying to DNS host or firewall block that crap.

Seriously WTF? It was this way in Win8/8.1 as well. Why is this a "news" story?

It's a story because Windows 10 is the last Windows going to be released. Meaning it will be rolling release and Microsoft will have total control on which feature will be added an/or removed.

Therefore, Microsoft could, for more revenue, release a feature or program requiring the user to subscribe or pay if they no longer wants to view the ads. In my opinion, it's a very dangerous precedence.

Sounds to be either end result is better than unwanted ads.
I'd rather stare at a blank screen from hulu pleading me to unblock their ads than listen to the same 6 boring/annoying ads being played every 5 minutes.

I don't think that Windows 10 will be last. They're planning to offer the usual 10 year support lifecycle for the OS so that would kinda imply that there is gonna be a new version of Windows following 10. Here's a linky to an article about that:
