Anyone Else Left Steam and Moved to GOG ?

I prefer keeping my games in a minimum number of libraries, and at the moment it's just Steam and Origin, and I hope it stays that way. Not that I'm against alternative DD of course, but I just want to have the option of Steam.

I'm still kind of miffed about that stunt they pulled as part of their relaunch when they took down their website the day after I bought a bunch of games. But I'm mostly over that - really the main issue now is that I often own games on Steam before they make it to GOG.

The cool thing about GOG is it seems they listen to their customers. It feels like a community driven thing, and when people spot a problem like that pdf-gate they seem to take action pretty quick. The guys running it seem really cool in interviews too, like your average gamer not some money-grubbing suit.

It was explained in the GoG forums. If you have no PDF client installed, GoG gives the option to install one because most of the extras have a pdf files. I don't know if they do it any longer, this was back in 2012 IIRC. I have always had a few PDF viewers installed so I never got any prompts or attempts to install foxit.

Since they screwed me long before 2012, I never visit their forums. At the time I was affected, it wasn't checking for installed PDF viewers since I already had acrobat pro.

Come on now. Why should GoG give people the tools needed to read any pdf files the games may come with. I just don't understand some people. If GoG didn't give the pdf reader someone would try to sue them saying they didn't get what they paid for.

Printed manuals went away a long time ago and most are pdf's. Plenty of applications do not bundle a pdf reader inside the installer. Hiding a bundled pdf viewer in your installer isn't trying to be nice, it's unethical. If it was clearly displayed during the default installation, that would be fine, but it wasn't, it was hidden in the custom installer. I won't disagree that someone might try to sue, that's big business, but it is ridiculous and wouldn't succeed. That's like trying to sue someone you bought bullets from because they didn't give you a gun.

I have Steam, Origin, uPlay and GoG.

My client experience is, from best to worst:

Steam > GoG > Origin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> uPlay >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GFWL

I have had no issues with either Steam or GoG, I rank Steam higher because they have achievements (I am into these things...), I had issues with Origin when purchasing and downloading DLCs for ME's, though those issues are now largely gone. I use GoG mainly for games that are not available on Steam (EG old old games) or games that do not have achievement system.

uPlay on its own however pretty much is the reason why I regret buying my 970's during PYP and not during Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight promotion. Even AK probably isn't as bad as uPlay. That thing is horrible. No idea if uPlay has improved any since I last tried as I found out I cannot get into AC games at all...

GFWL is the only thing I would never miss. I probably spent more time trying to get GFWL download, install, run and login than I did playing FO3 in my entire career.

I had to google to remember what it was, foxit pdf reader.

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/165895-solved-gog-client-foxit-readertmp-blocked/

Not required for the games to function and, like the guy above, the AV I was running at the time would flag the installer as viral-like.

I hope they've stopped this practice but screw me once and I'm not going back for seconds.

It was an optional download for the instructions included in most games. If you didn't have a .pdf reader installed on your system they gave you the option to download it so you could, you know read the instructions that came with the game you just bought.

The PDF thing really was a non issue. FoxIt is completely benign. I think they just need to hurry up and improve Galaxy and make that the defacto client so that new customers aren't confused by which way to go and get a bunch of RAR files if they go the GOG route. Needs to be more seamless for the non-techies. And of course they need to figure out how theyre going to lure more publishers so they're not forever stuck in first gear and niche status.

I've used GoG since day 1 and never had foxit installed on my system. I remember my roommate asking me if he should download foxit and it was given as an option when he purchased planescape or baldurs gate. it has always been an option if you didn't have a.pdf reader installed as long as I can remember.

Again, I'm not sure where you're getting they were hiding something as it was an option.

So anyways, just to double check myself, I've went back as far as 2010 on GoG and it is always mentioned as an optional download. If for whatever reason it wasn't I am not aware of it and I do agree that anything hidden in an installation no matter how trivial is wrong.

Yea. It does look like they are moving in the right direction but it looks like it may take them some time to get caught up to the bigger players.

As of now it looks like that has been removed from Galaxy at the very least.

Not trying to thread-jack, but Total Annihilation is $1.79 on GoG atm.

Hard to argue with that.
