Is an i7-930 2.8 GHz worth anything?

Hi and Thank you ahead of time.

I have taken apart a friends Dell XPS computer and found the i7-930 chip mentioned above as well as an ati 5770 VC. Are these worth any money these days?

He built himself a new system and I have an i5 -4670 K so we have no use for them.

Just asking.

I would say if you have a system with that then keep it, but used x58 mobos are not cheap. The chip is prob not worth much seeing how it is almost the lowest 1366 chip, maybe $25. The thing is probably 70% of that 4670k in terms of performance however ;)

The i7 930s were going for about $30 or so on E-Bay when I was looking about a month ago. A lot of bang for the buck there. :)

What about the mobo? If it supports 1366 Xeon CPU's it could be worth some decent money.

The CPU is worth about $25-30, depending on the stepping.

I suspect the motherboard is non-operational ... no way to test it now ... but the reason my friend built a new system is that this old MB would not post.

Thanks to all ... anyone want a free i7 chip and intel cooler? :)

Why are x58 motherboards so expensive??

Because mobos died faster than CPUs - since everyone bought them at 1:1 this means there's a lot of people trying to find replacement mobo and only few sellers who have spare mobo without cpu.

Also i7 920/930 were cheapest cpus going into those mobos so that's basic level anyone with x58 has which means minimal upgrade demand.

x58 mobos are just expensive due the prices of ultra cheap 6c/12t Xeon chips and people upgrading to those chips after EOL increased the demand so bad that prices just skyrocketed... it was and still its an fast and easy upgrade for those with C2Q, and low ends nehalem chips.

Exactly why I'm still on x58. 4.4GHz 6-core Xeon for sub $100...yes please. :D

I'm hoping it'll hold out until Skylake-E arrives in late 2016/early 2017.
