Still possible to hack component video support into Catalyst?

I was reading this thread from back in the day where some guys hacked the registry to get component video out of the VGA port on their AMD cards.

Do any driver/registry wizards on Hardforum think this is still possible? I know lots of legacy stuff gets left behind in drivers. There are definitely still entries for ATI in the registry.

Anyway, I'm currently using an external transcoder to get component from VGA, but it requires a bunch of extra cabling, and I have to switch with a DVI cable every time I boot to get rid of a resolution scaling bug. So I bought this adapter:

hoping it would work right out of the box. It didn't, of course, and just passes through the RGB signals from VGA.

Those never worked for me, I remember trying like 6 years ago with a 4870. Getting an hdmi to component adapter did, and it was only like 30 bucks.

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently using the Audio Authority 9A60 to transcode VGA, and it looks great. I was just hoping to use the old ATI dongle as a more compact solution.

Didn't those only work for the All-In-Wonder cards? I had a dongle too and it never worked for me. Makes me wonder if the All-In-Wonder series had a way of transcoding (transforming?) the pure RGB signals into the more compressed YPbPr signals and that this dongle was simply just a pass-through...

It's definitely just a passthrough, and I think the DIPs just send info back to the card on what modes the TV should run in. I would think that the YPbPr either happens on the DAC or GPU.
