Windows 10 will last till 2020 extended suport 2025

I wonder if this means during 5 years of mainstream support we will receive all OS improvements a long the way rather than have to wait for the next version of Windows? By the time it expires we'll basically have been upgraded to the next OS. Does that mean we are then on support for that version? It could be that's where "lifetime of device" comes in. As long as the device is still considered active you will receive the next version. If you run an old device you won't get the next version as part of the service.

It's still confusing.

You will most likely have to upgrade to the next version of Windows to continue getting feature updates after mainstream ends. So it may be possible that for 2 years the OS's will look very similar (Microsoft releases an OS every 3 years), but you don't get an automatic upgrade to the next OS.

Its the same policy that they have done for years. 5 years mainstream support, where things like improvements, browser upgrades, directX etc will be ported, and 5 years extended, where there will be no improvements, but bug fixes will be provided.

Yep, this is no surprise at all. Rather kills the I have to buy Windows again after 2 to 4 years crowd angst.
