Your parents probably use the PC mostly for browsing the internet, reading/creating office documents and playing possibly some flash games, right? So all they need is Linux Mint or Ubuntu Mate or similar.

Older people like very much to see the compiz desktop effects (wobbly windows etc) and they're generally very impressed with linux once you show them that it works just like their windows did (only with a couple of different named programs).

So don't waste your money on a Windows license anymore to do the work that linux can do far better and safer.

What OS do you have on your new computer?

Anyway, you will have much better answers next month when people experiment and find out what works and what doesn't. The free upgrade offer doesn't expire for an entire year.

Guys the computer at my parents is my old pc. They do not know how to use a pc. I use it whenever I visit. On my new pc I have no os. So o was hoping I could transfer the won 7 update to 10 on my new pc. But I'm guessing it's not transferable with 7

I am confused since there was no Windows 7 basic ever available. It was Windows 7 Starter, then Windows 7 Home Premium. Is that old computer something you built and purchased the OS for or is it a OEM machine like a Dell?

Ah, the old 2 for 1 switch.

No, this is not legal. Linux for you my friend!

Wikipedia said:
Windows 7 Home Basic was available in "emerging markets", in 141 different countries. Some Windows Aero options are excluded along with several new features. Home Basic, along with other editions sold in emerging markets, include geographical activation restriction, which requires users to activate Windows within a certain region or country.

Windows 7 Home Basic gets upgraded to Windows 10 Home in the free upgrade offer.

if the windows 7 license on the old pc is retail, you could install that version of windows 7 with that key on your new pc, then upgrade the pc to windows 10 (deactivating the windows 7 license for as long as you use 10). You can not leave windows 7 on the old machine and install it on the new as well.

+1 for Linux. It's the perfect OS for an older person or generally someone who is not a non computer oriented power user. Want to read e-mails? Linux is your choice. Wnat to surf porn? Linux. For some advanced paid programs such as games you have to keep windows but even then as a second option only.

Things are evolving there too since many games also now come as linux versions (on Steam).

My question was is it possible to take 7 from my old pc install it on my new pc then upgrade to 10 and delete 7 on my old pc and just install Linux or is my windows 7 stuck to my old pc for good? What is the deadline to buy win 7 or 8 to get the free 10 upgrade? Also, if you are not satisfied with 10 is it possible to dual boot and have 10 and 7? Appreciate the help

Maybe, maybe not. You will almost certainly have to make the call to Microsoft to activate Windows 7 Home Basic on your new computer. Whether Microsoft will allow that activation cannot be predicted by us. You will just have to try it and see. Make sure you have anything you might want from the old PC off of there before you try. If the activation on your new PC works, then delete the old Windows 7 on the old computer and install Linux. If the activation doesn't go through, then you're out of luck.

What is the deadline to buy win 7 or 8 to get the free 10 upgrade?

July 29, 2016 - one year after Win 10 is released.

Also, if you are not satisfied with 10 is it possible to dual boot and have 10 and 7?

For 30 days after you upgrade from Win7 or Win8 to Win10, you will be able to roll back to the old Windows, because it keeps the old Windows install in a windows.old folder. After 30 days, that folder gets deleted and you can no longer roll back. Restoring from a full backup of Win7 or Win8 might work after 30 days.

As far as dual booting Win10 and Win7 on the same license... wait and see if others figure out a way to do that, but I'm going to guess it's either "no" or "too inconvenient to bother".

The important thing to remember here is that you get to wait a full year for others more devious than yourself to figure out all the details of what you can and can't do.
