After gaming into 1680X1050 for such a long time, moving into 1080P or 1200P won't make me feel much of a difference. I want a jump in resolution, where I feel considerable difference in terms of details, clarity and overall I should feel the WOW factor.

With 4K display prices still sky high, and yet, no single GPU card can play latest games highest settings,

Is 1440P a sweet spot, I wouldn't consider GTX 970 to be mid range yet, as it still costs more than 350. Is there a mid range card that can deliver the same game play at 1440P resolution, which HD 4850-70 used to deliver in 2008 at 1650 X 1050 resolution?

My 680gtx plays just fine at the resolution. A 290x would also do well and both of those can be found between $250-300 dollars.

I did 1440 on mid-high settings on games like BO2 and SW:TOR with my 7850 w/boost 3GB with no issues. limited testing on games like crisis 3 and bioshock 3 where very positive at mid-high settings (shadows was a killer)

my 6850 2GB did well at 1440 on BO2 and SW:TOR considering but the big limitation was it kept running out of ram and dragging its butt had to turn down the textures and effects a lot.

New Games you'll probably want a 970 or higher just for your piece of mind. Older games a 280 or 290 will probably do you. Just get 3GB of ram :)

you can find a decent GTX970 for under 300$USD after rebate. That is what i'm on now mainly for the better power efficiency over the AMD.

It depends on the quality settings you want to use and the framerate you want to achieve.
What is your max budget for card and screen?

250-300 for a card, for screen I can increase the budget to 500, if I can get Dell U2715H for a good price.

About the quality settings, I should be able to view the details, texture, clarity, water effect and AA if required.

I want to feel a whole lot difference in gaming compared to the current resolution in my signature.

If you want the wow factor then 4k gaming or multiple displays in an NVSurround or Eyefinity setup.

I went from a 1080P display to a 4k display and all I can say is wow. While my 980 might not be able to play some games on their highest settings I'm here to tell you I don't think it matters. Every single game I've played has been absolutely beautiful.

Gaming at 1440P with eye candy cranked, will require GTX970+ power. I ran a 970 on 1440P on most games at max settings, and ended up selling it and buying a 980 (the 980 ti was not yet released).

That said, 1440P+ requires quite a bit of power to play games with everything cranked. 1440P and cheap do not go hand in hand.

I didnt spot, you are running an E8400.
I dont think you can be wowed with that machine.
It will need a memory and CPU upgrade at minimum, the machine needs replacing tbh.

Your budget is a bit low for what you want as well.

ps there is no such thing as Windows Ultimatum :p

Off course I will get a new gaming pc with sky lake k series processor and a gtx 970 or something similar and an 850 pro sad to boost gaming. The current rig will be used as a back up rig

1440p is looking to be the best in terms of performance with the benefit of 144hz GSync displays being available. Probably the best platform for 3-4 years until 4k becomes easier to run.
