34" 21:9 UltraWide Displays (3440x1440) - LG UM95/UM65 & Dell U3415W

So i have the LG34UM95 and have been using newer nvidia cards with hdmi 2.0 to get 60 fps with custom profile but with possible amd fury X not having hdmi 2.0, can anyone who has the same monitor and AMD 290X comment on sleep issues or other issues using displayport? Was this an nvidia and LG issue or just displayport issue with LG?
 
Well, going to have to discourage anyone from purchasing the DELL so far.

Got one from Amazon, and it was a dud and kept powering on and off constantly out of the box. There was also a big dent/scratch on the side of the plastic like some muppet had dragged it across the floor on the factory line. Decided to call up DELL directly and after some frustrations with their support line (don't bother), I went to the twitter DellCares team - much better! Anyway, they got a brand new replacement sent out to me.

Not so great. Power issue wasn't there, but instead there was horrendous backlight bleed and marks under the screen near the bottom. Not dead pixels or anything, but small blotches on the panel itself that spread out across a few pixels. Well, that wasn't going to work out either, so back to the twitter team. Cue another replacement (new, again).

Backlight bleed again, but I made it minimal by massaging the panel (that actually works quite well!). However, three of those splotch like things again. Makes me question where the hell they're assembling these, if these are pieces of dust or something. Was quite hard to tell if it was dust or not, to be honest.

After I told the twitter team about that one, they called me just now to say they're done helping me, which is fair enough since it came from Amazon I suppose. I'll just have to refund and sit this one out for a while.

All in all, I can't recommend the DELL as of right now due to the QC issues. Every panel was an A01, the first one being January 2015 and the others March 2015. As of right now, if you're looking for an IPS ultrawide I'm going to say don't bother and just keep waiting. LGs support is a dud and DELL QC seems to be taking a back seat despite how much these cost.

I kept the pictures of the faults I detailed when I sent them to DELL, if anyone is that interested in seeing it.

I run displayport with my 295x2 and have yet to have a problem.
 
it's the monitor that goes into sleep mode, not the computer

if your computer turns off (as in shuts down completely), the monitor then realizes there's no input. It will sit there and try to find an input for a few seconds, then go to "sleep"

that's when it's practically off, and isn't recognized by the PC until you press the god damn power button on the monitor again

whoever thought this was a good implementation at LG......ugh.....recently came back to a UM95 and forgot how annoying this issue is

Im not going to replace this one year old monitor unril something significantly better comes along
I never use sleep mode, so that's probably why. As fast as my system boots, there is no reason for me to use sleep mode.

So does that mean u can turn off computer and monitor can be left on without it turning on and off?

Monitor goes into sleep mode until I turn my computer back on just fine. The only pain I have, is when it goes into initial sleep mode and I need to change inputs. I have to wait about a minute before it will allow me to turn it on to switch inputs.
 
I just leave my LG 34UM95 on all the time. I'm one of those types. Specs down below. I use the DP cable that came with monitor.

Sorry to hear your Dell U3415W was a dud. I have had mine for over a week and no problems with my U3415W. I upgraded from a Dell U3011 and I could not be happier. I purchased mine from Adorama for $849 with no sale tax and free shipping. I have been playing BF4 and the gaming experience is great to say the least. I recommend this monitor.
 
Anyone test these ultrawides with longer HDMI cables? I'm thinking to buy one but I want my computer in a nearby closet to keep noise and heat down so I'll need a 30' hdmi cable. Anyone know if that is possible?
 
Anyone notice horizontal lines running across the Dell 3415w when scrolling with the browser scrollbar? The lines disappear once you stop scrolling.
 
A working solution to windows resizing after standby on the 34UM95 over DisplayPort.

It's more of a workaround that may not suit everyone, but it's the only thing that seems to work.
What you need to do:

- Plug the HDMI in along with DisplayPort from the same PC to the same 34UM95
- Keep the HDMI connection unused in Windows ("Display desktop only on ...", the one connected to DP)
- Once the monitor goes into standby, the PC loses the connection to it over DP, and HDMI quietly "takes over", retaining the 3440x1440 resolution
- When returning from standby, the PC detects DP again and switches back to it

It's been about 2 months since I last had the window resize issue this way, so it's fairly safe to assume that this actually works.
 
There are a lot of posts to go through, so I will just ask. Does this monitor have vesa mount holes?

Did anyone fix the no signal power cycling with a new display port cable or is the only fix to go hdmi. I usdd hdmi before but now i dsr and it doesn't go above 50 hz

I have the 34um95 and sometimes when it wakes up from sleep the right half of the screen is completely distorted and has to be turned off and on and this fixes the issue.

Anyone know of a fix to this?

And on these, three just seems waaayyy too wide to be realistically usable.

I know people are tired of me saying it but Climber, consider a 40" 4K. Your dual 980Ti setup begs for 4K, and a 40" is both wider and taller, so your field of vision will be immersed in gaming goodness. :) You won't gain any extra FOV in games, but it's well worth the tradeoff.

I ended up getting the Crossover 404k, forgot to comeback and visit the thread to say that. I love the screen. It is amazing for what you get and the price can't be beat.

I owned the flat LG 34" (own the curved 34c97 now) and sometimes had the same problem (2 x 980s in SLI). Seemed random.

After I went to the curved model, initially I had some of the same restore from sleep issues (using 2 x 980s in SLI) that many posters have had here. Eventually, i gave up on a solution and went back to the dark days of actually setting a Windows screen saver! This solved the problem. Later, I replaced the 980 SLI setup with 2 x Titan X's in SLI, and decided to turn off the screen saver and give sleep mode another try. It worked fine. I dont know if its video card specific or what. But the 2 x Titan Xs restore from sleep mode just fine using a DP connection, standard 3440 x 1440 resolution @ 60 hz (i.e., not doing any of this custom resolution stuff people have been talking about). So who knows.

Anyway, not to be a dick, but I'd say the monitors originally talked about in this thread title are going to be "dead" as soon as the Acer Predator drops. (for gamers anyway). If that thing turns out to have a decent pic, color wise, and not too much IPS glow / black light bleed, its going to be the cats meow of high end gaming screens (for me anyway). 34" 3440 x 1440 @ 100 hz (assuming you have g-sync capable cards). I would expect sales of "normal" 60 hz 3440 x 1440s to plummet though you could get a really good deal on a used one, like MINE :)

Mine is being sold the day that Acer comes out (September hopefully)

The Acer Predator shares the same LG panel so most likely image quality and IPS glow will be more or less the same. I don't think the sales of these 60Hz non sync ones will plummet though because the Acer is going to cost $1300 while you can find the Dell/LG for around $800 which is much much cheaper for someone who isn't a gamer but looking at this display for productivity. The LG was even on massdrop not too long ago for $800.
 
I knew the new acer shared the same panel as the curved LG 34", so i have high hopes for the same pic with respect to colors (I dont game in pitch black so I never even noticed IPS glow and/or BLB on my LG). What is curious to me is how Acer is (or claims anyway) to be getting 100hz out of the panel that LG runs at 60hz. I tired over clocking mine using a custom resolution, and BOOM, cant even get to 61hz. Green blocks / artifacts pop up all over the place at a 1hz over clock. But of course, Im really glad Acer (and presumably Asus shortly thereafter) is getting 75-100hz out of the LG's panel.

I didnt know the prices were down to 800 on the curved LG. I paid 1200 EUROS for mine (bought it when i lived in Germany) and at the time that was about 1350 USD using that days exchange rate. If the LG curved is down to 800 then it might still sell a few to more of the upper-midrange gaming crowd, though I still think the high end gaming crowd will have no qualms forking over the extra 500 USD for the Acer (and Asus later) for the extra 40hz + g-sync.
 
The overclocking on these monitors is probably not limited by the panel, but probably the scaler used. It's the G-Sync module that's going to overcome this limitation and allow for 100Hz. I definitely agree on hardcore gamers willing to shell out the extra money for the high refresh rate and G-Sync since I'm one of them. That monitor is going to be the king of gaming monitors for a long time.
 
While not the same model, I got the 34UM67, god i love this thing, I didn't want the higher res, because then I'd need more gfx power :p

But awesome monitor! Haven't tried FS yet as I'm on a GTX 970

34UM65 here. Also chosen because of GPU constraints. I really love the 21:9 2560x1080 desktop- running it at home and at work.

Well, at some point monitors like the LG 34UM95 will be obsoleted by newer and better monitors. At least I hope so. Hate to see stagnation in the industry. 40K monitors will do them in eventually once the industry gets their act together and make some better monitors but I believe the 21:9 will be around for some time to come because not everyone will want 40k and 21:9 is the closest alternative to 40K. Anyway here's to hoping progress moves faster. :)

In the future, there are only resolution wars.

If the Predator is the only larger monitor out at that point or the immediate future with those specs (refresh rate, GSync, etc.), then I'll be in line as well for the *second* batch. The Swift left a bad taste for getting in on the ground floor of a new monitor.

Though I think the 21:9 monitors would see sales plummet if a 4K 40-48" curved screen with (G)(Free)sync were available for a reasonable price. I'd pay a $500 premium over the Predator for the extra real estate and resolution, as long as I got GSync and at least a 90 refresh rate. I know that pushes the DP 1.2 / HDMI 2.0 spec to the limit and a bit beyond, but those specs are also fairly conservative for what the cables can physically handle.
 
So I NEVER had a sleep issue on my monitor until the upgrade to windows 10. Once I upgraded from Windows 8.1, I can't wake it up from sleep unless I unplug it. (Didn't change anything else)

Anybody else experience this?
 
Others have done so, but reported seeing dropped frames (which software utilities don't detect).

How do I test for dropped frames?

Edit you are correct, it is even noticable by eye on the UFO frames skipping test.

That doesn't work; you need to take pictures w/ a camera (even a Nexus 5 works if you use one of the manual camera apps). It said it was valid but I could clearly see it skipping a line.
Correct. The "Valid" has nothing to do with whether or not there is frame skipping. The "Valid" just indicates that the page is ready for you to assess skipping (either with a camera or with your eyes).

If you read these and other forums, you'll find all sorts of people who think they have successfully overclocked their monitor. However, in probably 2/3 of the cases, the monitor isn't actually capable of the refresh rate they've selected and there is frame skipping. On the 34" Dell and LG, the frame skipping is severe and you can tell even without a camera. On many other monitors, the frame skipping is more subtle (because fewer frames are dropped) and most won't notice unless a camera is used to verify.

Happens to me too from time to time, turning the screen off and back on seems to fix it.
Don't think there will be any permanent solution to this, though.
