AMD Fury Series is here. Discussion thread.

Amd is not dead. If they drop gury x to 600 and fury to 500 then they are pretty safe for now. They have a competitive card nothing worse and nothing more. I have nvidia right now and I hate people making dumb comments like amd is dead bla bla. They have a competitive card. I am sure they will squeeze little more performance out of it overtime but no one should make their purchase based on that. I think 600 and 500 will be better prices for the two and majority of the buyers actually don't spend that much money on cards. AMD is better off dropping the 390x and 390 to 375 and 300 respectively. Those will sell a lot more than fury cards and that's where the profit is. And I bet amd has a huge profit margin on those cards vs the fury x

maybe next card they release they can do a KICKSTARTER for it ;P get the proper fund to release it properply.

Still waiting to see if it overclocks at all with a bios mod or an updated afterbuner.... amd's peformance charts and comments on fury being an overclockers dream (probably core only) don't match up with what we saw today. At all... it's like they fucked up somewhere.

The dual GPU version might have pulled off $650 but this is,not even a $400 card.

Oh get out. Not even a $400 card? It is overpriced, sure, but come the fuck on, the Fury X is VERY close to the 980 Ti. More like $550-$600.

Almost everything has been said about this card and guess what, I still bought it

Reason for doing that is PLP-Eyefinity monitor support, which you can't get from the other side even if you sucked JHH's balls dry.

Gonna slap EK block on it and hope that they actually unlock the core voltage at some point.

Oh give it a year, remember when the 780 Ti was way faster than a 290X :). You will be fine.

Was going to say exactly this, because I see all over Reddit "just wait til Windows 10, just wait for better drivers, just wait for Air Fury.." Windows 10 isn't the saviour. It'll be years before there's a critical mass of DX12 games, and Nvidia I'll be ready for DX12 too. As well, if the Air Fury performed better they wouldn't have put the water card out first. They put their best foot forward.

I'm running the Windows 10 preview as my main desktop (my wife's running the twin build using Windows 7). In the games we play, the DX11 capable system (Windows 7) is running identical or slightly faster than Windows 10. But I do expect that for now because all the debug code is still in W10.

Having gone through this song and dance with the Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 betas, I don't expect final code to be dramatically different but until the actual games come out optimized for DX12, W10's launch on July 29th is not exactly going to magically make Fury look better.

You do understand DX12 is vendor neutral? Meaning closer-to-metal in DX12 lifts Nvidia's boat too.

Mantle was AMD only.
AMD has more driver overhead than NVIDIA does so all things being equal AMD should actually benefit more.

Honestly, I think it's a pretty awesome card, just not for the price :p @ $550 it would have made much more sense to me.

BTW! did Anandtech NOT get a card? shocking.

Anandtech's review guy is laid up in bed sick, so there will be a delay on their review. Supposed to be almost finished, though.

Hope he gets it out before its time to ship the card back.

Well it looks like he's already done the testing and has the numbers so it would just be the write up.

Poor Ryan. He knows the results already so I imagine he isnt too upset...

Still waiting for the 150+ page thread.... and 8 hours later... just a few more responses....

Is this really where AMD is now?

It's kind of like every other launch as of late. Super hype, fake benches and graphs all over the internet, AMD fanboys saying wait for _____ and this product will be AMAZING!

And then this. Empty threads, a over priced set of cards, and no wind in their sails.

I really HOPE AMD comes up with a more competitive card, or more aggressive pricing, so we can have lower overall prices. When AMD disappoints like this, it does absolutely NOTHING for the consumer.

What do you want? 150+ more pages going on and on and on about how AMD just ate your children and burned your village because they priced their goddamn card too high? There is nothing more to be said that hasn't already been said 1000 times across the many threads here and elsewhere.

Yea I guess it is different when we are looking at hard numbers and not speculation.

Here's to hoping something amazing happens, so prices come down.

Indeed. Speculation can go on forever. Once the facts are out, not much to discuss beyond a certain point.

Unless their margins are already pretty thin, I wouldn't be surprised to see AMD knock $50+ off the asking price rather soon.

You also forgot:

- Poor overclocking
- Higher power draw
- No DVI (for those who still need it)

And don't forget:
- GameWorks & Physics BS
- Sometimes slow driver updates for new games.
- Not faster or cheaper... Yet.

I don't think you're quite understanding the situation here. Except for the minority with an irrational hatred of Nvidia, people would just spent the extra $50 for a 980 Ti. 6GB VRAM, DVI, HDMI 2.0, 40-50% OC headroom, no concerns with water inside the case, no need to find a place for a radiator, superior driver release track record, Shadowplay, G-Sync, etc.

I can think of one reason that people will go with FuryX instead of 980ti: when they are also getting a FreeSync monitor with it.

A freesync monitor is what, $200 cheaper than an identical G-Sync equivalent? So there is bigger saving to be had here, plus FreeSync currently does not work with Crossfire, so anyone who wants to avail of FreeSync would probably prefer to go with Single GPU.

But if FreeSync did support Crossfire, it probably would be better to just get 390x crossfire instead over fury X, better performance and no VRAM worries to speak of, but that would end up costing around the same as a 980ti paired with a G-Sync.

Where are these 1650-1800mhz GTX980TIs?

The overreactions about Fury X are rather humorous. Worse than Tonga? I came to this site to discuss X58 Xeons and decided to branch out and see what other subforums had to offer. Now that I've found out, I think my time here is done. We've had a good run.

Video card section has always been like this, for as long as I can remember.

With that said, nv refreshed the 5800 with the 5900 quickly, with a much better cooler, some serious ocing and expensive memory. They were also compressing a lot at the time to maintain performance similar to the 9700 Radeon.

All of these options are pretty much off the table for AMD, their memory is fixed, the cooler is the best on the market and it would be suicide if they went back to compressing textures like they were back in the day, forcing us to use AF again. Although with their massive stack of TU's I can see it not being a huge factor.

So, basically they are implying that everyone except Tom's and some Russian site were using the wrong driver? Really?

Actually, I hope AMD stays at this pace. AMD has no reason to price cut their latest offerings since doing that (a la 290 days) will just encourage old buyers to buy Nvidia cards. Nothing changes.

Looks like we'll burn together. :)

You're grasping at straws. AMD somehow found a magical formula for 10% increase in their drivers in 3 days?

Not to mention nVidia will also have driver optimizations for their latest cards in the coming months too. It's not like they are idly waiting with their fingers up their butts.

980 Ti reference base clock = 1Ghz. People are hitting 1500Mhz even with low quality ASIC. So yes, 40-50% OC headroom just as I stated. Not sure where you're getting 1650-1800 but strawman more.

So you are comparing base clock speed vs boost clock speed to get that 50% OC

Maybe I should do the same with the red team. 290X unlisted base clock is 727mhz. It doesn't go lower than that on full load. My 290X was game stable at 1250mhz with water. So that means 71% overclock. Suddenly 290X looks like a insane overclocker.

AMD was stupid when they released 290 series, they should have just used the 727mhz base clock on their slides and said that it can boost up to 1ghz if cooling is sufficient.

I'm an AMD fan, some dude called me a fanboy once even though I have a house full of i7's, but anyway, I'm disappointed with the Fury X. However, I really don't think it's complete junk assuming the price drops after the initial run after reading a bunch of reviews. I do wish they'd like, buy a game and an NV card and benchmark before they talk so much smack, but such is capitalism I guess. I'd buy one for a SFF build in a year or so, when I'm still probly running 1080P, because the AIO is cool, the card is small and aesthetically pleasing, and it's "good enough" for a moderate gamer like my aging self. It's what I'd call "neat" with the AIO and HBM and all that. I don't know that "neat" is enough to make them money, but it's enough to sell me a card since the bar is so high across the board already. When it's cheaper..

fwiw..
