Exactly. They should have contracted with a company in Gotham. That's where the prototype was made and field tested with great success, after all.

Not necessarily. The production prototype could have been an attention-detailed stellar item to win the contract, then the factory decidedly cut some corners once production ramped up while playing it off as "minor changes...no big deal." Once WB got the quality assurance reports from the actual production units and found them lacking this close to launch day, there's nothing they can do but ditch them.

Well now I'm actually happy I missed the preorder allocation for the Batmobile edition at my local store.
 
So I guess the Chinese factory wasn't able to produce a hunk of plastic for 99 cents each that resembled the batmobile?
