Dark Souls 3 annoucement at e3

It's most likely From looking at the console makers and saying "how much are you willing to pay us to keep this off the PC for # months?" Dark Souls has kind of become a really great game on all platforms and as much as I hate it, I can't fault them for trying to squeeze some money for exclusivity on consoles.

I would say it is most likely a translation error or the leaker trolling for attention.

It is very likely that the deal for Bloodborne was inked before From had any real idea of how well received Dark Souls would be, on PC. They made a barebones, direct port, to honor a petition. That port of Dark Souls released on PC in August 2012. In February 2013, the PS4 was revealed at E3 and there were off-record quotes about a "Demon's Souls successor", from a closed doors dialog, during that same E3.

Dark Souls went on to beat the odds and become a successful game on PC.

From have said that they were surprised and very happy with the great response from the PC community. Therefore, they did the PC versions of Dark Souls 2 mostly right.

Sony probably payed very well. But, I doubt it is well enough for From to keep all of their games exclusive.

They're great games but really? They're not system sellers. They aren't Call of Duty. Sony doesn't give a shit about the PC and MS isn't going to bother paying off a studio to delay a multiplatform title that will likely sell a lot more on the PS4 anyway. MS makes stupid decisions sometimes but they're not THAT stupid. I love how people instantly jump to the most silly reasons completely ignoring the dozen or so more logical ones.

Bloodborne sold really well...much higher then expectations...the Souls series started out as a niche game but each successive game has gotten more popular then the last...it will never be a mainstream game like the CoD franchise but publishers see it as a system seller (I bought a PS4 just for Bloodborne and I suspect many people did the same)

I almost did as well. Though to be fair it is kind of one of the only good exclusive titles on the system. I wonder what really well was. Sony Europe (the one who said it sold better than expected) didn't release numbers. Still I don't think any of the games are pulling the numbers that either company would care to pay off either From or Namco to keep it from the PC. If they were doing that they'd just got the rest of the way and make it exclusive, I doubt either company would be against that kind of deal.

I bought a PS4 for BB and I know several others that did. The Souls games are pretty big outside of the casual gamer market (COD,Madden, etc). And I would definitly agree that BB is a system seller. In fact it is the only good exclusive on the current gen consoles right now.... two years after their releases.

That said I think a PC release is inevitable. Unless From just hates money. They sold more units of Ds2 on PC than the consoles combined. I don't know how well SOTFS is doing on current gen but I would expect that considering you can get the game at various online e-tailers for half of the price of the console versions it makes it much more enticing to those upgrading from Vanilla DS2.

I just hope From finally fixes the inherent input lag/delay on the PC versions. Even SOTFS has the lag delay on PC. On PS4? Controls work perfectly.

I'll be shocked if DS3 isn't released on PC at the same time as consoles...shows a major shift in policy at From Software (or the publisher)...I thought Dark Souls 2 sold well on PC plus they released a remastered version...I think From Software just doesn't like PC development and feels more comfortable with consoles...the 2 PC Dark Souls games were more an afterthought then designed from the ground up with PC as the lead...seems like they tried to do that with Dark Souls 2 but something went wrong and they had to change course

No, not even close. I'm not sure where you came up with this number, but Dark Souls makes its bread on console.

However, the PC reception has been very good, on its own merits.

The last numbers I saw for DS2 Vanilla sales were 2.5m. Where ~1.5m was PC the rest on console. That was back in Mar of this year. According to SteamSpy there are 1,000,000 people that own DS2 for PC on Steam, but this only accounts for public profiles not private or friend-only.
So it doesn't count me or most of my Steam friends who own the game as most people I know have friends-only or private profiles.

Souls games sell more on the PC, period.

Probably because its less kid friendly than say Call of Daycare, which conversely sells way more on the consoles than PC without a doubt.

DS2 released on consoles March 11th and by the end of March had sold 1.2 million units. The PC version didn't release until April. As of April of this year NB said it had sold 2.5 million units TOTAL. So unless not a single other copy sold on the consoles there is no way it sold better on the PC. As of March of this year Ars Technica was estimating around a million people owned the PC version.

Sources: 1.2 Million

Total numbers

Ars Technica's report

well it looks like the truth is evened out in the middle: it appears Dark Souls 1 and 2 reception on PC has been very good. Enough to effectively match the combined console sales.

This means the combined total liftetime sales for Dark Souls 1 is at least 4 million. Maybe as much as 5 million. We should consider, however, that a solid million is probably due to steam sales, letting the game go for $6.

and Dark Souls 2 currently sits at about 2.5 million, all combined, SoTFS included.

those aren't quite Call of Duty numbers. But, All three souls games have done 2 million or better.

Considering a lot of games struggle to do half that well and publishers run tight margins. betting on success or closing companies; those figures are certainly important. It really underlines my earlier comments that From probably won't go exclusive with Dark Souls. They would be stupid to do that, now.

I just want a non-shitty co-op system so that my friends and i can join one another without having to hope that the game shows our signs... I like the concept of the game, i think its wonderful, but it is a lot more fun with 2 others who have different skill sets (archer, mage, tank) or the like.

It would also be pretty neat if you could customize armor and weapons, with dyes and different metals to increase durability and what not.

Liked DS1 and 2 but I wonder who will be working on this if the main team was on Bloodborne. Almost makes me think the DS2 team will be on this one.

I really liked Dark Souls II better then Bloodborne I thought the game was layed out better nicer colors more NPCs who gave a rats ass and you didn't have to pound on a door to keep their attention though the game. Bloodborne had some cool enemies but the stuff in Dark Souls II just seemed but together with more thought and good reason. Like the Pyromacer fireballs and explosions and stuff that Bloodborne just lacked as a whole. Dark Souls II had a way better story with the hags at the start of the game humanity ect... the covenants and odd boss fights that were not all giants like the Rat lair.

Looks like it's not coming out until next year so it could be the Bloodbourne team working on it or some combination of the two groups.

I agree. I never really was a fan of the Co-Op in the Dark Souls. For the most part it felt like a single player game. It'd be nice to go from start to finish with a buddy.

IGN has obtained a Dark Souls 3 promotional image for E3 narrowing the release window...

Dark Souls 3 has finally been officially announced at Microsoft's E3 press conference...referred to as the series' "final episode", Bandai Namco has confirmed that Dark Souls 3 will be coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC in "early 2016."...

That giant... Are we going to the Land of Giants? So, direct sequel? Sure looks that way.
I hope they reveal some game play this week too, obviously they got something, if those screenshots are any indication of how far they are in development.

This is the most excited I have ever been for a game...I didn't get into Dark Souls until DS2 was almost out. At that point, it took me a month or so to fully understand just how truly phenomenal these games are.

I CANNOT wait for this game...

so this is the 'final episode' in the Dark Souls trilogy?...I can't believe that...maybe they'll finally make a true Demon's Souls sequel after this

Well, Bloodbourne showed that they can make new IPs work within a similar(ish) formula. I think they know what they are doing :D

... or in the case of Dark Souls II, they don't! ;)

NEWS FLASH
Dark Souls 3, NOT the final game of the series. But a turning point.

"So it's just a turning point. It is true that it will be a turning point but it's still not the final game for the Dark Souls series."... "From Software is well known not only for the fantasy game, but they've been creating the sci-fi mech game Armored Core [and] also some Japanese-style games, like the Ninja games. So Miyazaki-san may introduce new direction in those genres or themes that From Software has worked on in the past in new, future titles.

Make that Armored Core Souls game you always wanted Miyazaki-san. You can do Tenchu after that. But give me Armored Core!

those asshats just posted an article bad mouthing how Shenmue is being funded with such a silly accusation. there's a few other previews from other sites that I saw earlier...ign was good. polygon being polygon...
seriously, wtf is this?
We have no idea of the true cost and investment partners behind this project. Shenmue 3 is already hilariously over its goal, although we don't know how close the project is to getting the money needed to finish the project, nor will they comment on how closely Sony is involved. This is an emotional appeal to "save Shenmue" by backing the campaign for millions of dollars, but the follow-up to concerns about where the money is coming from is 'stop asking questions.'
what are those people on? they didn't do this when Bloodstained shattered its goal and funding is being handled the same way... what a click bait site. sorry for going off topic.

I just wish thiey'd revamp the ranged combat and magic, it's just so damncumbersome to use either one vs melee.

Switching different spells, moving while attacking, etc.

Sounds like great additions. Enough perhaps that I may even not feel the need to finish DS1.. skip 2, and go straight to 3! Better bow/spell stuff would be the biggest addition i can think of.

Pffft dark souls 1 will still be best. And unless they go back to dark souls 1 strength (level design). Ds3 won't be able to touch it :)

What would be really cool if they imported your character from dark souls 1 to be the end boss since in ds1 you had a chance to be the new Lord of the Cinder :)

Miyazaki will be doing quite a bit of the level design in 3. He did most of it in 1.

It's possible this will be Best Souls. Then again... that's a tall order. I've kept Dark Souls 1 installed since it launched. It delivers.

Still have yet to purchase the 2nd.. too expensive. When it will be $10-$15 I'm sure nobody will be online to help me out during boss battles and such. Kind of sad.

you just have to watch for it

Dark Souls 2 was Cheapest Ever: $14.79 on December 18, 2014 - looks like the last winter sale it went for 15$

Looks like scholar of The First Sin though was Cheapest Ever: $24.99 on June 11, 2015 - just 2 weeks go :)

oh hell yes!!...they showed so much more actual gameplay footage then I was expecting...the combat looks totally like Bloodborne combined with the usual Dark Souls lore, atmosphere and world building...the best of both!!...also looks like they went with the Bloodborne/Dark Souls 1 type of single boss fights (which is fantastic...Dark Souls 2 seemed to go with the philosophy that adding more bosses makes a game harder, which is not the case)...my body is ready!!
