Don't Buy A Steam Machine

Nahh man, IT'S COMING AT E3!

https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/38sjrq/could_someone_prove_this_wrong_email_leak_about/

But yeah... seems like Valve is just phoning it in these days.

Reddit is like the bottom of the pit of the internet these days. Wild rumors on just about anything and everything, and in the end its all a load of bullshit.

At this point anything gaming software related from Valve is a running joke, people have given up on them.

What amazes me is Valve pushing SteamOS without actual gaming titles which would entice people buying the systems. Its one of the reasons XBOX/PS has its own fanbase.

From the article

you can’t even play games that are compatible with Linux but aren’t on Steam

Thats because the article is by a shill...

I can assure you *IF* I was to get a steambox (which I might depending on what hardware comes out - looking for a nice formfactor for the frontroom that is quiet) I would be able to get any linux compatible game on there.

Sure joe-average might struggle, even fail but to outright say can't is just bullshit.
Maybe a more convenient method will surface later but put it in perspective... how many non-PS4 games can you play on the PS4 ;) console players already swallowed the lockin pill

That's pretty much my take on it. Ever since it was announced I've been trying to understand why anyone would want one. The Steam controller on the other hand looks to be a nice improvement to console controllers that haven't really changed for many years. Have to use one to really know for sure if it can replace a mouse and keyboard. I'll wait to read the HardOCP review on it...

ha ha...he said "replace a mouse and keyboard"

I'm more interested in their streaming box. I put a decent graphic card in my windows media server in my basement and can now play wit her 3 on a crap laptop. I'm going to put one of thief streamers on each tv for less then the price of a ps4

Right because some no name fake company with a clueless lady-CEO that got lucky to be propped up temporarily by a Kickstarter based on a bunch of unmitigated vapor is totally the same as Valve.

They are both producing set-top boxes that don't have a market in the hopes that a market will spring up around the devices based on merit. Steam Machines are PC's in less-upgradable but console-looking cases running a non-windows OS that won't play windows games.

Who's buying this?

The Steam controller looks terrible to me, but it's as you said: have to use one to really know for sure. Looking forward to seeing one in person in either case.

I honestly dont understand why PC gamers are so fanatical about STEAM. If youre a gamer you should be pissed because Valve isnt doing ANYTHING to satisfy their fan base when it comes to actual gaming.
get off your ass Valve.

Valve is on record as saying they gauge the community's pulse by reading Reddit. Fucking Reddit. The opinions of adults who don't speak in meme form or spam image macros are being ignored in favor of the ramblings of teens. And look where that's gotten us? Valve has become, bar none, the most out-of-touch gaming company on Earth.

Instead of doing things like increase the quality of their customer service, or God forbid, make an actual game, they develop useless Linux consoles. Reddit sees it, shouts praises from the rooftops, and Valve thinks "Yup, that's what our customers want!". It's sad.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Valve fans are worse than Apple fans. Slap a Steam logo on any random piece of junk and watch them drool mindlessly. Look at Steam Controller, a garbage touchpad contraption that has been panned by everyone who has touched it. Yet for some reason, you have Valve fans spamming shutupandtakemymoney.jpg all over the Internets.
That's just it though, what's new or unique about Steam Machines? What does this bring to the table that can't be done today? Not only that, they do significantly less than the same devices running Windows when it comes to PC gaming.
I would love to see these questions answered. Why would anyone spend a grand on a machine that does significantly less than not only a Windows machine, but a much cheaper console? Mods? That's it? The only tangible benefit Steam Machine backers can come up with is mods? Give me a break. Console gamers aren't clamoring for Skyrim.

It was never anything except a Valve publicity stunt--with Gabe's fingerprints all over it...;)

As much as I would love to see Linux gaming being mainstream, I have to admit that Windows still have it's grip on PC gaming. Everywhere I look, I see articles and community discussing about DirectX 12. Very few people are paying any attention to Vulcan/GLNext.

Pfft. It's just a PC disguised as a console... ;)

Just like xb1 and ps4, then. A x86 pc disguised as a console :p

Microsoft has spent the last two decades screwing Windows gamers in favor of the Xbox. The smart thing to do is to get as far away from Microsoft as possible.

Then there's the economics. PCs keep getting cheaper, but Windows doesn't. Windows is now the most expensive component of a budget PC if you make it yourself. Individual PC builders are getting screwed so hard by MS. Microsoft gives away Windows for cheap devices, and even for expensive computers they sell it to the big builders for a fraction of the cost they sell it to PC gamers.

If you're a PC gamer, Microsoft is your worst enemy.

Not sure I would rate $100 as exactly expensive, but to each his own.

PC gamers don't game on budget PCs. Casual gamers will game on budget PCs, like the Asus desktop or HP laptop they bought at Best Buy. I doubt they elected for the Linux install.

Now there good one you be surprises on just how min idiot system out there on Steam are even lower end then Steam Box after even Intel HD / Iris Series Graphics an't good enough unless it latest Iris Pro 6200 an even AMD better get of butt with there APU, Be side this is first Steam line I'm sure the 2 gen will be way better as it should have more up date components, but if was going to by one right now I opt for Alienware Steam Machine i7 but there are 13 other option and should all other to come out your that doesn't even count Home Build System but most of them you can't even build because there base on laptop components some other are just base a round Mini iTX system chassis and sure some will be custom build motherboard with reg PC components.

DX12 is only a meaningful release for PC's since DirectX was intentionally stagnent for so long (about the length of it last console cycle) AMD started moving to their own mantle API and Gabe's move to his own OS.

MS was strangling PC gaming deliberately like they killed Media Center, to push you to an Xbox. MS knows you'll buy a copy of Windows (or more) for your house. They want you to buy those copies and an Xbox.

I basically biased to wanting to reward the competitive efforts. I think its suicidal from a PC gamer perspective to celebrate the company that tried to squelch PC gaming.

Don't buy Xbox. Don't buy PS4. Don't buy Roku, Don't buy iPad. Don't buy iPhone. Don't buy smart phone. Don't buy tablet. Don't buy... etc...

Where's my 386?... it's all you need...

The only way Valve could get me to buy a Steam Machine is to bundle HL3 with it. No HL3, no buy. Your move Gabe.

Your false is false. Alienware Alpha was intended to be a Steam machine, but because Steam wasn't ready, Alienware put their own GUI over Windows. The bottom compartment for example was sized perfectly for the wireless Steam controller USB dongle, but since it wasn't ready they shipped a XBox 360 dongle instead which doesn't fit in the compartment.

So I'd out came with windows, wouldn't it be a windows console?

That's the joke. It's the same argument people use with the new consoles. :)

Downside of the Steambox for me - no exclusives. It IS a PC running Steam. There is no reason for gaming PC owners to buy one (except to have one or want it on the big screen TV with the gaming PC in the other room). Nothing to set it apart...

At least PS4/XB1 have exclusives.

yes and no.. there is more than a fair share that game on a budget.. Hell due to having two hip surgeries, I stuck with a q8200, 640 black, 4gbs of ram, 4850 for years, and upgraded the graphics card to a 6850 becsuae the 4850 broke. im hoping around Christmas to get some amazing deals on parts for a nice new system.
