Steam Hardware Pre-Order

Wow. Decently priced, too. Tempting just to try it out.

Just pre-ordered the steam controller. That Steam Link looks interesting though.

Dunno, I think $50 only seems reasonable because they are gouging for like $65 now on new console controllers. I remember when controllers were like $20-30 and the feature set is still basically the same...

Pre-ordered a controller as well. There are still 20-30 dollar controllers. I got the PC version of the Xbox One controllers for $32 a pop.

Great, all the good things go on sale AFTER I already bought an alternative for them lol... (XB1 controller, still waiting on the Wireless adapter).

Anyway, that steam controller looks like good value, it's the same cost as a set of Wireless Xbox 360 for PC controllers, but I'll probably wait for reviews to come out on this one.

Am I correct in assuming any game with XBox 360 controller support will work with the Steam Controller?

So far I couldn't find anything about steam controller being X-input or DirectInput or both.

I only use a controller for emulation. Not very impressed with my 360 controller with NES games.
"I totally pushed up, WTF!!" :)

The D Pad on the 360 controller is notorious for sucking balls.

Yeah the D-Pad didn't look very comfortable, besides it looked too similar to the F310 I have.

I bought the XB1 controller since I read reviews that the D-Pad was a major improvement, but I reckon I probably would still use F310 for NES/SNES etc games due to the better position and bigger d-pad.

Now to find some silicon joystick pads for the XB1 controller..

If only ms would support wireless connectivity with the xb1 controller.

On topic is steam link part of the pre order?

MS already have announced that XB1 wireless dongle is on the way for PC, they just never said when, so I am going to place it as Steam time Soon(TM).

I'd be willing to bet that it's XInput compliant (and probably DInput as well maybe). Steam has very tight integration with XB pads it seems based on the Big Picture gamepad features. This is just a semi-educated guess on my part, but it seems logical based on what I know of the interface. I use my Logitech F710s and X360 pads both (XInput) with it non-stop in the living-room.

I'll probably pick up a couple of these too. It seems like it would be wise to have:

2x - X360, XBOne, or PS4 pads
2x - Steampads
1x - Dual Arcade Stick

On a "proper" living-room setup.

It looks a lot more like F710 compliant but at least F710 and F310 can both switch between X and D easily.

Xbox 360 controller is still doing me well although I never use the dpad which does indeed suck balls.

On some older FPS's I use joy2key to use the left side of the controller for WASD movement with a mouse in my right hand. Works great. I'd be curious how the touchpad thingy on this controller works for FPS games, I assume it's still not as good a substitute as a mouse for aiming. I wonder if it's better than a stick though.

For $49, I have to try it. My HTPC is plenty good as is, but if I didn't have that, the $49 link sound like a good deal as well!

You are correct, doing some research it appears they finally announced it at GDC in March of this year and I still couldn't find a release date. I'll need to try out the steam controller in person, but if it passes muster it will be my new controller.

Pre-ordered a link and a controller. No longer have any xbox controllers laying around but have 3 ds4's. Hopefully they can add support for them sometime in the future. In the mean time I figure I'll give the steam controller a shot. Curious to see how it works for rts and other mouse heavy games.

$15 shipping seems a little steep for this, but oh well. At least there isn't tax.

Is that based on your experiences using one? Experiences which haven't happened yet because it just got released?

In all fairness, he is "Mad"... :D

I see these pads as more supplemental in my case. I think they'll provide a different way to control some games, and I can see them working a lot better in some cases. Precision platform games might still be better on something with a nice traditional D-Pad, and my MAME collection definitely prefers real arcade controls. To quote Michael Bolton "I guess I kinda like em all..."

going to get a Steam Link and a controller, but i likely will just make my sister get them for me for Xmas since i can wait a month or 2 after release.

Steam Link vs. nvidia Shield. hmmm... Shield is more expensive but has more functionality.

100Mbps ethernet on Steam Link. Valve why do you hate us?

For some purposes that could be a bit low, but for just streaming I think that's probably pretty reasonable.

I hope they get together a Steam Link app for Android TV and then we can just get any old Android TV we want and don't need two boxes under the TV.

finally, we are happy to announce that starting this Fall, you’ll be able to purchase the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows to enjoy the freedom and convenience of the wireless controller on Windows 10 PCs, laptops, and tablets. The Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows will be available for $24.99 U.S. MSRP or bundled with an Xbox One Wireless Controller for $79.95 U.S. MSRP and sold in most markets where Xbox accessories are currently available.

Kind of spendy for a controller. Makes me want to try a steam controller that much more.

Hopefully the Steam controller is all it's cracked up to be then.

That's more than the original xbox 360 controller was, back when it was bundled with the wireless adapter. Which is a perfectly fine PC controller, really. Mine still works (although lots of people online complained about the poor quality of the wireless adapter.)

The Chinese knockoff wireless adapter is what sucks on the X360. They original, authentic Microsoft one which I assume is what you have doesn't have issues.

And Microsoft is locking out Windows 7 and 8, and limiting it to Windows 10.

Its the long history of bullshit tactics like this why SteamOS and linux gaming in general needs to take off, and the Windows gaming monopoly needs to be broken up.
