any play fast FPS like CSGO and game on a large screen. I'm a bit ignorant, so bear with me on this, but for LCD screens like I've run in the past, if you don't get a good one, you get input lag from the mouse, as well as ghosting if the gtg time isn't low enough. I was wondering if I got a DLP type projector would I suffer from mouse input lag, or gtg ghosting issues? Any other suggestions for HUGE screen gaming? Just an idea for future man cave wish list :)

Not sure about DLP as I have a LCD projector currently (125" screen), but I haven't noticed any ghosting issues in a long time (been through 2 other projectors so far) due to the projection technology itself.

Typically it starts being noticeable from the signal processing on the projector itself if it's going to cause an input lag or not, just like how certain TVs have an input lag or if they offer a mode to bypass it. You'd pretty much have to do some research on any model you're looking to buy and see if it has a specific mode to bypass any potentially laggy processing (ie: "Game" mode on some TVs) or if other people are experiencing lag with that particular model if it doesn't since there's no real way to tell otherwise.

My brothers old setup, BF2 on a 108" screen.

Unreal Tournament at 108" on the same projector before I sold it to my brother.

I had an Electrohome ECP-4500 CRT projector. It was $16,000 new, paid $900 for it and it was never used.

My big complaint is at 1080p unless you are sitting a football field away the pixel density is awful. Much better image quality on a good old 24" monitor.

The AVS Forums can really help you as well when it comes to going into front projection land.

I have had a number of projectors now as well as quite a few large resolution monitors. For the projectors I never really got ghosting and many new projectors now come with a 'game' setting mainly meant for consoles.

There are 2 things I believe people may want to note when moving to a projector and large screen. The first is that there is probably going to be a bit of input lag. The newest projectors seem to do quite well with the ghosting, but do still suffer from some small amount of input lag. It hasn't affected me that much, but for competitive gamers it may be much more noticeable and less desirable.

The second item is that the screen is a lot larger. Most people believe this is exactly what they are looking for, and indeed it is quite impressive and fun to play with an ultra huge screen. However, note that with a bigger screen it also means it is going to take your eyes that much longer to lock on to targets coming at you from the sides. With a smaller screen it is easier to keep track of the whole image and react faster to things that happen at the edge. On a large screen it makes it just a tad more difficult and typically will slow down your reactions a tad. So again, for competitive gaming, this may not be ideal.

The bottom line, if you are just playing for fun and aren't really competing at the higher levels, then a large projection screen is unfreaking believably fun. If you are competing at higher levels, then it could be a little bit of a handicap.

I game a 120" screen, powered by a BenQ W1070, (DLP), I can't notice ANY input lag, so it's less than my old Dell 30" which had some noticeable input lag.(40ms?)

Anyway, for me it has no ghosting either. I sit about 10 feet away. It's nice.

I'm using an Optoma HD131x DLP 1080p projector with 110" screen.
Input lag is unnoticeable.
There is no ghosting.

I dont do competitive gaming but a friend does and he has nothing bad to say.
He loves playing on it.

Large screen gaming is about filling your vision not getting the best possible detail. Regardless of size a projector will give worse image quality than just about any monitor; however, the overall experience is usually better (IMHO obviously).

I've sat about 5' away from a 720p screen and enjoyed it much more than my desk setup at the time which was much higher resolution. I've also blown up standard def Gamecube games on 100"-ish screen and had a far better experience than on a high quality 27" CRT.

A monitor will always be better for image quality/clarity and response time and smoothness and etc., but there's something special about playing on a giant screen.

I have a 140" screen in my living room and will use it with any game that works well with a controller. Mouse and keyboard games, I stick with my monitor, but that's mostly because I don't have a comfortable way of using those in my living room.

I have the same setup except 110" and its awesome.

Ditto, but as was mentioned, you sacrifice pixel density for size, and there's no real practical way for most setups to have a "lounging" area with a big projector screen for movies/gaming but also have peripherals setup.

So I have a gaming HTPC with a ATI 7850 for 1080p gaming in my living room, and its fun for some games but I use a XBox 360 controller.

But other times its a lot more fun to actually sit at a desk closer to a 3440x1440 higher density screen where I can use a mouse and keyboard or flight controls or joystick or a force feedback racing wheel thanks to having a desk and sitting upright.

So bigger isn't always better, especially if you're sitting on a couch, just factor that in.

One way to limit your costs though would be to just have your mancave have both a gaming desk with a high resolution screen, and a lounging area for movies/tvs/ that you can still do casual gaming on but using that same computer. Just wire up your projector for video over ethernet with a simple switch, and then you don't need two systems.

This won't work in my current house, but on my next house purchase that is definitely the way I'm going to go! :)

Projectors suck. All they can do is display a big image. They will never look as good as a 1:1 pixel display with deep black levels.

Cheap projectors suck, but they are getting better.

More often then not the room itself sucks too.

Grey screens may help get better contrast levels.

Yea those sub $1000 projectors often are not good at all. Bulb replacement is a chore and expensive. If you don't do the math and forget to get a projector with cheap bulbs you could be looking at paying $900 for a projector and another few thousand for bulbs over its lifetime plus the higher than average power usage.

If you want deep contrast you need to spend around $1500+ and add a $200-300 screen which can absorb light more effectively and increase contrast.

You are paying for size and if you don't use that projector often and don't care about picture quality then they are great. But if you want a great picture and plan to use it often there are hidden costs.

In reply to the most recent posts...

I use my projector from my couch and have done for years.
Its not at all difficult if the mouse can track the sofa material, or you can use a cushion which is also handy for raising the mouse height.
If you have nothing the mouse can track, stick a mousepad or cartridge paper book on a cushion.
Feather cushions are best because you can shape them to fit your arm, arm angle + mousepad and can set the level explicitly so the mouse surface is level, the mouse wont roll off.

It is extremely comfortable.
When not using the projector, i have a below knee height table with a 27" monitor for PC use.
When using the projector, I put the monitor on the floor and can put my feet up on the table.
I use large feather cushions for support because they shape however I like and are dead simple to get comfortable with.
Bliss.
Seriously!

I am quite fussy about image quality having previously been a Panasonic Plasma fan.
I'm not anal like some but colour quality must be good, image must pop, brightness must be high enough and blacks need to be pretty dark.
My HD131x projector does all of this very well in a dark room.
During daylight with the curtains open darks suffer, but its bright enough not to matter for watching TV or general PC use.
For gaming or watching movies I close the curtains, job done.
The darker the room, the darker the black, something to bear in mind so good curtains might be something you need.
But also bear in mind that the brighter the projector, the darker blacks seem, this is quite a bright pj.
This is on a basic glass bead screen that you can buy cheaply.
I intend on upgrading, but this isnt bad at all.

Bulb prices/running costs are very low for a quality pj.
My bulb lasts 6000hrs on eco, 3500hrs on full power.
I am 2600hrs in on full power and the brightness is still great (Its taken me almost 2 yrs to use this much)
When it does die, the cost of a new bulb is only about £115, Less than 1/3 of the price of my previous Epson pj which also only did 2/3 of the hours!
This is one reason I bought the HD131x.

On full power it uses 240W, eco mode 200W.
In the UK thats 2.4p/hr, 10p per day for me on average.
Even less when you subtract the running cost of your current TV or monitor.

fyi :)

I have no issue gaming on my projector. Now mine is know to have a bit of input lag but I don't pc game on it just some xbox one now and again. It's an Epson 5030ub. I had a optoma HD25E before and a hd24 before that. The 5030ub is a lcd and the optoma are all dlp's. If your going to game on your projector go with dlp. There is almost 0 input lag. There is no ghosting when gaming either.
