Bluetooth Is The Most Annoying Automotive Feature In Existence

BT in my Benz works flawlessly. Had a Kia Forte loaner for a few days. Bluetooth was completely unusable at anything above 20mph. It's the car quality, not the technology.

Yeah, somehow I keep getting passengers who don't know what seat belts are. I thought that was a problem solved 20 years ago.

I buckle up when I go out, but Ive always found it funny that in the state where I live people can zip around on motorcycles sans helmet, but if theyre riding in a car they must wear a seatbelt for safety (gg insurance lobbyists).

The justification is that with a motorcycle, the only person at risk is the person assuming the risk. If you crash and you hit your head on the curb, you're only hurting yourself, and not some innocent person.

A seatbelt is meant to keep your place in the vehicle, and without it you or a passenger could fall out of place and cause loss of control of the vehicle that might otherwise have been regained. For example, say you are stopped on the highway because of ice, then a 18-wheeler hits you and launches your car forward, if you're strapped in your seat you might still be able to hit the brakes or steer from danger, but if you were flung about or a passenger flung forward onto the controls, the danger is increased.

Aftermarket Pioneer unit professionally installed here.. and it is FLAWLESS. It's in a convertible and people even understand me while driving with the top down. So flat out.. It DOES depend on the phone and system.

With Android.. through apps I can have music playing and have it pause to read out texts. I can even do directions with music playing (pauses to say turn here, etc). And anyone saying it is dangerous just hasn't had a good system. I can call, text, etc.. without taking my hands off the wheel or my eyes off the road.

I don't think I'll ever own a non-BT car again.. it is that vital.

In my car, using a JVC aftermarket head unit, when I use the bluetooth I can hear them great but they all complain I sound like I'm in a tunnel. When I switch to handset, they say MUCH BETTER but then I can't hear what they are saying. So in short, FU, I'll call you when I get done driving.

And yes, I know microphone placement is key, but I didn't feel like tearing up the entire dash of my car for "optimal placement". Plus it's a Mustang so it's really loud anyway.

if youre knocked hard enough that it would have ejected you from a vehicle or even just knocked out of your seat I feel safe in saying that 95% of people arent going to recover their vehicle in time to prevent any further damage. The fact of the matter is that insurance companies and auto makers have both paid lobbying dollars (feel free to check yourself 10s of millions of dollars are known to have been paid out in the 80s alone) to have legislation passed to force everyone in the front seat of a vehicle to wear a seat belt in an effort to reduce their potential payouts from accidents or to avoid having to comply with other proposed standards at the time (such as mandatory installation of air bags in the case of the auto makers themselves).

I mean if you can show me a definition of Seat Belt anywhere that says anything about "keeping a driver or vehicles operator in position to prevent further damage in the event of an accident" I will gladly apologize as the majority of the definitions I can find all pretty much say "a belt or strap in an automobile, airplane, etc., fastened around or sometimes diagonally across the midsection to keep the person safely secured, as during a sudden stop".

Microphone placement is key, exactly, and very easy to do with the right gear. I used something very similar to this in my Vette on my sun visor since the car had no bluetooth, which is right next to your head:

Or likewise get a sun-visor phone mount, and then again the speaker and mic are right near you: http://www.amazon.com/iKross-Clip-V...2342535&sr=1-1&keywords=sun+visor+phone+mount

Or even an A-pillar mount like I have, which I also attached a wireless charger to my mount, so I just plop my Galaxy S6 on there, and its topped off to 100% by the time I'm at work in spite of using WAZE on the whole time (it points out cops and accidents up ahead).

Holding the driver in place during avoidance maneuvers/emergency situations was actually brought up in the debates in the TN state house when they decided to make seat belts mandatory -- as many legislators and much of the general public felt that they didn't have the right to make a rule that was only to protect the driver. Regardless, the bill carried, sadly enough.

I think the author really should be criticizing the specific bluetooth in his vehicle. Saying that "Bluetooth Is The Most Annoying Automotive Feature In Existence" because his setup sucks would be like someone saying that "computers are the bane of human existence" because they have a crap computer.

Personally, mine works flawlessly.

Same here. I use the Bluetooth for the rare phone call, but it always works fine in my Toyota.

Why sad? Not wearing seatbelts in cars is what should be listed as an example in the dictionary next to the word 'stupid'. And it is plausible, take my sister for example. In my parent's defense, they did buckle her, but he unbuckled herself, stood in the brown van between my mom and dad's front seats, my dad was forced to slam on the brakes, and she flew forward so hard that she knocked her front two teeth out on the shiftknob. Luckily it was her baby teeth, but they even had to later cut her gums as the replacements weren't growing out as apparently the gums had hardened from the trauma.

Didn't cause a secondary accident, but I could see possible making an emergency swerve to the right, and an unbuckled passenger in the front seat falling over onto my stickshift or in front of my steering wheel and causing me to lose control. In any case, its not a big loss for anyone to require it, and honestly if they used the excuse that not wearing a helmet with eye protection could cause an accident I'd be fine with that too, as I was an idiot once and thought it'd be OK to open my visor just for a second since it was so hot outside, and a gdamn bug hit my face at about 60mph which felt like a bullet... I can only imagine if it hit me in the eye, I could have caused a pileup.

Agreed, my 2015 Honda Fit works flawlessly and sounds great. Now, the speech recognition is not the best, but that is my fault - I have a speech impediment. They need to improve on the speech learning function for people like me.

When I was shopping last year for a new car after being rear-ended, one of the features that I specifically looked for was Bluetooth integration. (Aux input is pretty standard on cars nowadays.) My Bluetooth is pretty great in my 2013 Buick Verano, and the time I have problems with phone calls is usually related to my S3 phone and coverage, not the setup. I also play music through the systems, and it is pretty good as well. (Better than the AM/FM reception).

As for GPS... it's basically turn-by-turn directions through OnStar, and I'm not paying $10 a month for that when I have a 5yo up-to-date GPS and my phone that does a better job. Also, voice commands.... bleh. The idea is there, the execution.... not quite. I really hope that Google Auto gets adopted by the manufacturers in the next few years so that when I purchase a new car in 2024.... maybe.
