Need for Speed "Reboot" Coming

Sounds like a new Underground. If it is like Underground 2 with its pseudo-simulation I'll be hyped. If Criterion is still at the helm I will not be interested at all.

Oooorrrrr, read the article and see that it says Ghost Games. :D I would prefer it on the Xbox One because most of the PC based Need for Speed games get all herky, jerky after a while. (Does not matter what hardware and even the original Need for Speed: Most Wanted does it as well. Cool thing is, I still have my original profile for that game from many years ago.) I am not a Cobalt fan but I did like my customized Cobalt in that game.

Forgive me, kind sir, but I can't see that site in the OP at work. But thanks for the good news! Ghost Games was fromerly EA Gothenburg. According to Wikipedia (unsourced...), developers at Ghost Games have worked on titles such as Forza Horizon, Project Gotham Racing, and Race Pro. If this is true then I am excite :).

Oh sure, give me a reason to buy a game at full price for the first time in a while why don't ya. :D Happy to help. Well, also, that is why I did the :D smiley. :)

I liked all of the games up until Carbon. Underground 2 was tedious, but I liked the open world elements to it. Starting with Carbon, they became hit and miss and more focused on the console versions. Usually very much at the expense of the PC version.
Thematically I've never really had an issue with any of them. There are only just so many ways to keep a racing game with a plot fresh. It usually just came down to which ones played and performed well without getting stale.

I believe it's also a bunch of former Criterion folks since Criterion was gutted, I'm not even sure if the studio itself exists anymore.

Cant wait! I've been craving some NFS. What do you guys consider the best current title to be? I haven't played since Hot Pursuit.

Personally I think NFS Hot Pursuit 2010 is the best "new" NFS game. I recently played NFS Hot Pursuit 2 (pretty old, like early 2000's) and while it was fun, it just felt a bit odd. Older NFS games had some very direct steering and drifting pretty much didn't work at all, while newer ones pretty much force you to drift. Most Wanted 2012 was shit, and Rivals wasn't much better IMO.

I'm tempted to buy Hot Pursuit again then...I traded my PC copy in to half price books a few years ago. I see it on amazon for $20..PC download and instant play. Not sure the what the difference is.

Instant Access will link to your Origin account so if you buy that version it will be added to Origin right after purchase.

I only have steam. Will the non instant access allow me to play without origin?

It should as the game doesn't require Origin. I would read the Amazon info/reviews first though just to make sure.

You should be able to download it through Amazon that way. You might need an EA account to activate it though, I can't remember exactly.

You shouldn't need one. I only made one to keep track of any records I made.

It's been ages since I've played HP...Now I feel an urge to replay it and even go back to Burnout Paradise. Sadly Criterion never matched that game with their NFS titles.

A little more on topic: The year off has actually put me back in the mood for a new NFS title. They had a run of not terribly good titles from Most Wanted, The Run, and Rivals I hope going back to the Underground style gets the series back to high points of those two games. No NFS title since Undeground 2 has really hit the mark perfectly it's all been a very bumpy roller coaster that can never quite reach the top of that peak.

I don't understand how an article about NFS can have statements like " We’re listening to the fans" and "we’re returning it to greatness in this reboot," while also having statements like "and an immersive narrative."

When the fuck are these people going to figure out that people just want to race cars, They don't give a damn about lame stories. It's the reason The Crew flopped. Remember when Undercover came out and everyone lauded it for its shit story, and then Shift came out and everyone loved it because it was a pure racing game? I havne't played most of the last few releases, but it seems they went back to the shitty stories, and here we are again, with the franchise needing a reboot. So why reboot it with the same thing that nobodies asking for?

I really miss what NFS used to be (everything before Underground). NFS I/II/III are some of my fondest racing memories as a kid. I'd love to see them straight up remake one of those games with not a single change except for graphics.

FYI, Hot Pursuit is also on Steam, for the same $20. It also goes on sale for $5 from time to time (that's what I paid years ago). It's a safe bet that you'll be able to get it for $5 in early July for the next Steam sale. If you're not in a hurry, just wait for that.

Both Hot Pursuit games were good. Rivals was consolized, but with some community tweaks was a pretty good looking and playing game.

I didn't like the story as it was presented, but the backstory was always enough for me to fill in myself as the main character, which immersed me more. I enjoy all kinds of racing games, whether or not it has a story. Most Wanted (2005) and its sequels were some of my favorite in the series.

My biggest problem with the recent run of NFS games was the Criterion "style" of racing game they were. The driving was always without substance, in my opinion. Now I know that Ghost Games is made up of a lot of the remains of Criterion, but I'm still hoping that they have gotten away from the boring driving mechanics they do.

A remake or a new game in the vein of the original Hot Pursuit (NFS III) would be awesome. But if this new game is anything like Underground 2 I will be happy.

Over a month away! Let's see if I can hold out.

I was partial to Porsche Unleashed and the original Most Wanted. One of the Underground games was ok too if I remember correctly. I like arcade style racing. Some NFS games seemed to fill this need nicely while others seemed to not be able to decide between arcade and sim and failed on both fronts. (well maybe not full-on sim on that side of things, but like they were going for a bit more of that...)

IMO the most fun NFS game ever created

Certainly up there. I loved NFS1 and 2. There was something about wrecking minivans and sending them flying.

I'd say, allow the arcade bits to be turned off and give an open-worldish version of Horizon/Gotham. Maybe throw in some of the burnout insurance stuff. With a great wreck engine and the ability to tune, it could become a great racing game.

And stop trying to make NFS the Fast & Furious of video game stories.

I played a version many years ago on the PS2. Hot Pursuit? You could out run the cops and it was fun. I then played a similar version on the PC around 2005. A few years back I bought the new Hot Pursuit (?) and a few other EA racing games. They still felt like that PS2 game from a decade back, and not in good ways. Would it be so hard to add the following:

- Ability to choose teams when playing online. I want to choose if I want to race with or against a friend.

- More options, like traffic density.

- Free drive, open world exploration both offline & online.

- More open racing. Give us a start, an ending point on the other side of a large open map, and let us choose our routes to get there. Enough of this repetitive closed road racing.

I felt there was so much they could have done, but the games are so stripped down. They've been releasing and rebooting the same game year after year. They need to add some basic options for it.

GIEF US NFS:Most Wanted (2005 but remastered)

We will worship you.

The driving in that game is quite...iffy. Overall still a really fun game though, I didn't even really mind the graphics too much.

Just ran out a couple of quick races in Need for Speed from 2005. Wow, the graphics in that game are a lot more dated than I remember since the last time I played it probably last year. :D Still fun though.

Underground II is one of my favorites. Porsche Unleashed was the best one IMHO. The original Hot Pursuit was a lot of fun.

I never liked Porche Unleashed personally. The driving mechanics were great for the time but as much as I love Porches I don't like racing games limited to just one brand. I played a few hours of it and then went back to NFS3. If I had to rate my top five favorite NFS games I think it would look something like this:

Need For Speed III
Underground 2
Underground
Most Wanted (2005)
Need For Speed

I think I'd put Hot Pursuit (2010) almost tied for #5.

Looking at a list of NFS games on Wiki brought back some memories. Anyone remember ProSteeet? I remember liking the idea and I want to say I liked the game but I only have vague memories of it.

Criterion should not be allowed near any racing game. Even going back as far as Redline Racer all they turned out was utter crap.

The best modern day NFS was Shift 2. And the best old NFS was Porsche Unleashed. If either of those games dev was working on the new NFS I'd be excited. But Slightly Mad is all into project cars nowadays, and who knows what's eden games up to these days.

No offline mode confirmed.

No sale.

This is an attempted growing trend I'm seeing out there and it's not a good one. If it's an MMO, I get it. Past that I don't.
I understand the need and want for offline play, but who is really not connected to the internet at all times anymore? My only concern with always-online, especially coming from EA, is the shutdown of the authentication servers without an offline patch. EA has a habit of shutting down servers for games as little as 2 years or less after a game was released.

I've never seen the need or want for online play. In fact I've never played nfs game online before only local multi-player has ever appealed to me in this series.

This is the worst possible direction imo.
