Server memory questions

Hello all, I am sorry if this isn't the correct forum for the post, please move it if you feel it would be a better fit somewhere else.

I have a server at home with 24 gigs of memory, and I am looking to increase that, and htop is showing me that MUCH of that is in use. Currently 22 Gigs, and that is with Plex Media server running, but no players online, no media watching/listening happening currently, Minecraft servers are NOT currently running.

I tried to place an order at a site for sticks that match what I already have, but was told they are currently out of stock. They offered a Micro part in its place and for the same price, but I am not sure what to do. One that that I am not sure of is that the Micron part doesn't have a heat spreader, would that have any impact on the temps in the 2U Supermicro chassis this lives in? My Other concern, is that if I DO go with the Micron part, can I STILL use the existing Nanya memory that came with the server when I bought it, or will that 24gig have to be removed?? Just looking for some guidance and opinions here, as I am not sure what to do. I have experience building PC's since the early 2000's, but this is my first server build, and I haven't ever mixed memory in a build.

The PLAN was to order 12 sticks, and fill all the slots, topping the server off at 64 Gigs of memory.

Software Setup:
  • Ubuntu 14.04 Trust Tahr
  • Main system is primarly for only ZFS and KVM, will eventually be monitoring system health and loging system temps for me, more reading to do for that
  • KVM Host 1 - 6 cores, 8 Gigs memory - Plex Media Server
  • KVM Host 2 - 6 cores, 8 Gigs memory - Minecraft Server, just for message around currently, not fully set up yet. Not sure if this will be running 1 or 2 servers
  • KVM Host 3 - 1 Core, 1 Gig memory - Test system so that I can toy around in here and not affect the other running systems before making changes to anything else.

Thank you for the suggestion, that is what I am going to do. I got the server and IBM card from ebay, you would THINK I would have checked there for the memory. Might as well get MY memory replaced too, lol.

I found a seller with 16 gig lots (4x 4gig) sticks for $80. It APPEARS to be the same model I have, so I sent an email to confirm the Nanya model number. If it matches up, I will be placing my order in a short time!!

Thank you.
