Hahahahahaha! Wait. This is a joke, right?

Verizon is buying AOL for about $4.4 billion, or $50 a share, the companies announced Tuesday. The deal is part of Verizon's (VZ, Tech30) new focus on digital and video platforms, as well as its connected device network, which it calls "Internet of Things," the telecommunications company said.

I don't even...what the fuck...There has to be some patents or some tech that AOL has in it's library that makes this deal worth 4.4 BILLION.

Someone paid actual MONEY for AOL?! That has to be a joke. Maybe they paid in bitcoins, old shoes, or used staples.

I suspect this is the reason why

AOL (AOL, Tech30), best known in the 90s for its dial-up internet service, now has several media brands, including The Huffington Post, TechCrunch, Engadget, MAKERS and AOL.com. It boasts nearly $600 million in advertising revenue.

Now whether that pans out for Verizon is anyone's guess

Heard this involved a couple hundred million of AOL's debt, too.

Now watch...existing AOL customers are now going to have to pay $50/mo for just having the service, $10/mo for dial-up connection fees, and $20/mo for every 100 MB used. If they go over their data allotment, then they get charged $1/MB and are throttled to 300 baud.

I think this purchase is less about their subscribers and more about the websites they own ;)

They still had 2.1+ million customers so yeah that is pretty nice to add that.

Oh man the comments on CNN about the merger are funny. Basically to sum it up they were AIM jokes more or less or the chatrooms.

As kbrickley mentioned, it also gives control over a lot of high-traffic blogging and review sites.

They'd own the Huffington Post, Engadget, and a whole host of others. That's no small thing.

This is perfect for Verizon, now they get the 2.1 Million American subscribers that still use AOL. These subscribers pulling in a half a million every year, they can be in the green in about 4 years. Not a bad deal for Verizon at all.

Thanks for the laugh CNN :p

Finally, I no longer have to keep making jokes about AOL continuing to exist.

Because they won't.

Fuck yeah I'd buy AOL too just to scoop up that executive staff, they're clearing geniuses to keep making profit on a defunct company like this after so many years.

just think if aol didn't sell off shoutcast Verizon would own that too. Now days shoutcast is a joke. They are blacklisting stations. Fuck that. What has this world come too. Still I wouldn't pay jack shit to own Asshole-Online. I'm waiting for Google to buy everyone. Then they change their name to Skynet... and well you know how the story goes...

Sarcasm aside, this does reek of rich dudes transferring large amounts of money to other rich dudes in exchange for a few brand names. Verizon's stockholders should be very unhappy.

AOL actually owns some extremely popular websites news/tech/ad networks/etc

I just wonder what is going to happen to some of these news/tech sites that some times speak critically of Verizon...

So verizon can put more useless shit on your phone that you cant get rid of.

If they put aol anything on my phone that can't be removed, I'll smash it and switch carriers so can fast. My handset is like 8 years old so it wouldn't be much of a loss.
