Elite: Dangerous

Last night I came across a big chunk of space that was 'permit required' to enter. I guess they have sectioned off areas for aliens or whatever.

Some of those areas of space are close to the major faction's home worlds. You can earn permits to enter those systems, but I'm not sure of the benefits.

Benefits wary from just some interesting scenery (like stations with gardens) to discounts on equipment and more rare goods you can trade to distant systems for profit.

or Thargoids passing gas walking down the corridors of thier ships.

And no, you can't land on planets. Yet.

I have a lot of fun with this game. It's one of the rare space sims that to me just feels 'right', very immersive and sandbox gameplay.

To you guys asking if you can land on a planet, right now the answer is no, but that is a feature that is in the works and will be available eventually.

The controls are great, I fly with a HOTAS but keyboard/mouse is perfectly viable.

The game's FAQ say that you will eventually be able to land on planets. Is this something that has already been added or soon? The game looks good but I want something a bit more than just flying around space.

Anyone?

What makes this area weird is that it's a whole sector blocked off, about 1000ly from inhabited space. I'm guessing there's aliens hiding in there.

I tried playing ED while on a recent business trip away from my gaming rig, CH Products HOTAS, TrackIR and VoiceAttack. Talk about stone knives and bearskins. :p

I'd argue that mouse/kybd isn't viable. Mouse/WASD works fine for simple maneuvering, until you need simultaneous lateral/vertical thrusters or throttle adjustments. I'm convinced all of the complaints with station docking being too hard come from mouse/kybd users.

I play with a VR headset, HOTAS, and pedals. Station docking is still difficult. I get all lined up, then all of a sudden I accidently hit my boost button and ram my Asp into a wall at top speed. So much for 80 tons of rare goods. I did it often enough that now I have my gorram landing gear out before I enter the station, and it stays out until after I leave. It adds a few minutes to each dock, but it keeps me from losing millions. :D

(No, really, I agree with you. Docking's much easier with a proper setup.)

There's a GALNET blurb in Newsletter #74 too.
I like the concept of this game becoming questy-competitive. It feels like we're just waiting for the trumpeting event to get things rolling.

I'm willing to bet that aliens will be introduced in near future...

That would be an user error, not a problem with the game correct? :D

Looks like by the end of the month everyone who pledged to the kickstarter and before the game came out will get Steam key to add game to Steam account (or a way to link to Steam account, not sure if I'm reading this right). Looks like it will start May 18th.

Awesome news, it's nice to have everything consolidated instead of spread out over various services.

I really don't know why I love this game so much. The actual gameplay mechanics are just OK but there's something about being in my spaceship flying around different solar systems that's super addictive. I really wish I was better at making money

You can get your Steam keys now. Frontier Dev thread.

Generated mine yesterday, installed a separate instance of ED. You still need to authenticate to your account after launch.

The desire to explore a persistent universe, even a virtual universe, and be the very first human there is a very deeply engrained thing for humans. Dropping into a system and seeing a lone Earth like world that has never scanned or seen and knowing your name will be attached to it and possibly be colonized if the game is around long enough is a fun thing.

I saw some people having problems generating their Steam keys using Chrome, make sure to turn off ABP on Frontiers website and it worked fine...after I remembered my password (stupid auto log in).

EDIT: I got this worked out. Frontier said that there aren't a lot of these kinds of accounts so they have to do it manually.

Mine says this:

"You have not purchased any games eligible for partner keys.
You may however log into a third-party below to link your third-party account with your Frontier Developments account.
Your account is linked to Steam."

No idea why I don't have an eligible game. Only thing I can think of is the VIP doesn't qualify.

I would love to see some giant planet-sized stations that you can explore. That would be fun.

Is there are [H]ard Group made? Many of my friends are not getting in to this game and I am in need of some people to roam around space with!

If I am close enough I will drop on by! I have no clue where I am, I think I am next to VEGA right now.

I am slow crawling between non-sequence stars. That big 30LY jump range is tempting, but man the things you skip over...

I'm a little over a week into this game so far. Starting to figure out how to make some money trading and jumping in Wings for Conflict Zones. I like the variety of things to do, the ships and outfitting them, but I think I will get bored fast after I own 3 each of all the "good" ships.

pretty much this with the current state of the game. Its uber fun until you get to a certain point then you just kinda...stop having interest in playing it anymore. I put in about 80 hours and one day i just didnt feel like playing it again. No specific reason.

That has been the case with me and most games, except for the few I find a good community to play with. I managed to stumble upon a pretty good group that is into a little bit of everything, but especially the zone shaping. Like ED's own Illuminati, but with honorable goals, lol. They are from all over the world, just listening to the various accents on TS is fun. Regardless, every game has its season. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Elite Dangerous is on sale again.. can anyone tell me if you can land on planets yet?

No. And don´t expect that capability any time soon. It will probably be a paid expansion/DLC content anyway, given how it will consume a lot of dev hours.

That was unexpected. Would've bet it wouldn't show til 2016. Wonder how much it's gonna cost to put flames on my EVA buggy?
