World Community Grid

I'm opted in to Beta WU's... no idea how to tell if any came through though.

Turned on UGM a few days ago to reach 5yrs and am now remembering why I stopped where I did. Progress on this project seems so much slower than, say, OET. Have a few quad sockets hammering away at this, but it's slow going. Resource Manager (Windows 2012) doesn't suggest anything is amiss and the SSD doesn't seem to be taxed either.

OET work units are much smaller than the other sub projects at WCG. Badge progression should be the same for all of them as that is based on CPU run time. UGM does not need to be checked for BETA work. However, their current setup does require at least one sub project to be selected at all times. I typically select CEP2 and just leave it set to 1 work unit per host while trying to grab BETA's. So, you may have to explain why you feel UGM is slow going compared to OET a little more.

To tell if you got any, you need to:
Click My contribution at the top right of your WCG page.
Click Result Status on the left
Then you can refine the results by sub project, by host, etc...

Apparently they had all gone out already. I didn't get any. Oh well.

Of course... in my less than ideal state I forgot about that. Seems I received eight; still a far cry from obtaining the bronze badge though. :p

As for UGM progression - know this isn't perfect, but it'll have to do. Have two boxes yielding 32 WUs every 2h35m, one box yielding 40 WUs every 2h55m (more cores, 0.2GHz slower) and a final box yielding 24 WU's every 3H. Used to have a lot more boxen at my disposal, but other projects finally caught up with the idle hardware. ;) None the less, you'd think I'd be churning through the years pretty quickly, but that's not the case.

Put it this way: looking back at my device history, the same box that was churning out 60-65D/24hrs for OET is returning 25-27D/24hrs for UGM. Does that make sense?

Yes.... but only if those work units are sitting in Pending Validation or Pending Verification. You won't be credited hours until they are validated. (even if they fail or error, etc...)

OET is a lot more popular with everyone rushing to get their quota. The WU's also run quicker so are typically quicker to validate.

There appears to be problems getting CEP2 and OET work since right before WCG's website went down yesterday. Don't be surprised if your tanks run low of work if you have only these sub projects selected.

Hi everyone, hoping for a little bit of help please. I have just tried this boinc thing on my 8 core xeon server. Downloaded the boinc client from the WCG site onto server 2012. Downloaded and installed fine, put in my proxy server and joined it. I was on the WCG site, joined the hardocp team and ticked all the boxes for all the work available, including these 2:
If there is no work available for the project(s) I have selected above, please send me work from another project.
Please opt me in to new projects as they become available.

I get no work though :(. I checked the logs and it is checking for work just coming back and saying no work available for the 5 or so projects it's trying to check. I even checked the box saying send me beta stuff.

terrabyte89, hold tight. WCG for some reason is having a work unit shortage right now. There have been multiple posts in their forums today and I also mentioned it in the 2015 BOINC Pentathlon thread earlier. I'm guessing a lot of teams started building up large caches for bunkering as the challenge is supposed to start tomorrow. They may have caused some issue with the supply chain in doing so. Just hold tight as this is extremely rare for WCG to run out of all work like this. You may also want to add WUProp to your list to run alongside any and all other BOINC projects as it is a non-CPU intensive app. http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/

Just my luck for my first time using it!! haha. I took it off f@H as it really wasn't recognising the cpu grunt I had, so I'm hoping boinc is better :).

It now says work completed for this project: 59 but I'm not sure I've seen it do anything.

I tried adding that wuprop, but setting it up as a new user and entering an email and password I get a login failed (Although it should be registering not logging on!). Might try registering on their website. Man this stuff is harder than it should be!

edit: What is the hardocp team name for wuprop? I managed to get on after I shut everything down and tried again :).

editedit: Found it! Boincing :p (what's the verb for this haha) wuprop for team hardocp now on this boxen.

Keep in mind that WUProp will only give you points for work units IF there are other BOINC projects running alongside it. So, until you get work from WCG or another BOINC project, it isn't doing much either. I didn't want you surprised if you see that behavior.

The verb is typically Crunching instead of Folding but yes we also toss in "BOINC'ing" as well.

I agree the process could be smoother but the problem is that the BOINC client is a separate entity from the projects themselves and is an open source client. So, anyone can use it. The problem with that is that the projects can make it even more difficult. Adding the team really should be an option from the client.

Oh, and I highly recommend you set up an account with BOINCStats.com and then use their account manager for attaching to projects and creating accounts and such. If you manage multiple machines and want to support multiple projects, it really is the way to go.

Here is the link to the instructions for setting of the BOINCStats BAM! account manager.

http://boincstats.com/en/bam/

Work appears to be flowing again. If you don't see any in your client, do a manual update.

Just checked this morning and I have 8 work units "mapping cancer markers" one for each core and 100% load. Looking good :).

I think I have a boinc stats bam account but I'll have to go through the instructions and add it in!

I have pictures of that process in the BOINC installation guide if you need them.

This stuff really is hard lol. Sorry for all the questions.

I can't seem to add WCG to the boincstats Bam! Account manager, the magnifying glass doesn't seem to work?! It does for others but not WCG, which seems to be the main one I'm part of :O

I was never able to add WCG from the Boincstats project list either, but I did get it to show and to update routinely. If I remember correctly, I had to select World Community Grid from each local client's BOINC Manager, not from the BOINCSTats project list, add WCG as a project, and then select BOINCStats. Sorry, I don't remember the details. It wasn't exactly user friendly. You should (should - I'm hedging here) be able to revert client management BOINCStats if you wish, after you've setup WCG from the local client. Even if you've added one or two projects from BOINC Manager, you can still though, add and manage other projects from BOINCStats.

You haven't done anything wrong WRT to setup. The problem you described is fairly common.

I hope this wasn't confusing. Don't feel alone. It is a bit convoluted to set up, but once you, it's like a freight train on perfect track, at least with Linux. I have not tried Windows. The beauty of the BOINC concept is the maximum flexibility and choice it gives the donor-user once the user has everything running. One BOINC installation, many or few projects, at the user's whim.

FWIW, I can't tie WCG to BOINCStats/BAM due to the password I chose for BAM not being compatible with WCG. See, the former has a special character in it that the latter does not allow. As a result I just add WCG to my systems manually. (Truth be told, I do most of my systems manually :p)

Hmm... it has been a while since adding WCG, so it would be helpful to know if you used the same passwords for both or not. Also, one reason WCG has troubles from time to time is that unlike other projects the user name isn't the same as the email address. I will look into it further.

Here is the odd part, I now have WCG listed as a project that I need to "find my acount" with at BOINCStats. This wasn't true a week ago. I'm guessing something recently changed that is causing the issue. I will post in their forums and see if they have any advice on the matter.

Linden and terrabyte89: Do me a favor. Click on the "My projects" link and tell me if WCG is listed there. If so, click in the boxed area under the "Options" header and see if you have the option for attach all or detach all. If so, it is working but jut not removing itself from the sign up link. I will report back if I find anything out.

OK...so Willy fixed the issue with WCG showing up under my account again to sign up. Apparently, it was a ghost database fluke/issue.

Try again and let me know if it is now working for you or not. Please and thank you.

No, it does not show in "My Projects," but it does show in "My detailed stats/Projects list." It's always been that way for me, if I recall correctly.

It will show in your detailed stats as that is a separate function of the website and is based off of your CPID. The BAM! portion only will list the projects you have added. Kinda silly I know. Are your passwords for the projects and for BOINCStats the same as well as the email address used for account creation?

Hi Gilthanis, It doesn't appear under the "my projects" tab on Bam! However when I go into "my detailed stats" and "project list" it does appear there! Very odd. I've noticed point allocation seems to update a bit oddly also. Bam! tells me that I only have 240.44 credit points from WCG. But if I go into my stats on WCG it tells me I had 10,516 yesterday and 412 the day before. Does it just take a couple of days to come through?

Is there an easy way to tell how many points other people make, what's good and what's not?

I probably shouldn't be posting this stuff in here, is there a WCG or boinc for noobs thread?

WCG or BOINC noobs thread? That only exists if you want it to.. :D

A quick recap on WCG history. WCG used to run the United Devices client back in the day. United Devices got to the point where it ran out of work. So, instead of letting people's systems go cold, they decided to just reissue work that was already finished essentially wasting electricity and data usage. So, someone called them out on it and soon after it crumbled. (That is what I've read anyways over the years) So, WCG looked for a replacement and settled with BOINC. Now, they had this problem. Points aren't equivalent between the two structures. So, they didn't want to anger crunchers that had already put in a lot of work by setting points to 0. They didn't want to anger its user base by cutting all the credits significantly. So, they basically did a conversion that only applies at WCG. Now, it was/is supposed to be fixed some day, but shortage of staff/priorities/etc.. etc.. routine brings you to now. We still have the screwy system. What does this mean. If you look at your points at WCG you will always have significantly more than what the stats sites reports. That is because 7 WCG points equates to 1 BOINC point. Thus the explanation of the UD client credits.

To address your question about the sites updating stats... WCG updates their stats 2 times a day. I think they export their stats every 6 hours. Each stats site can update as much as they want based on this. I honestly don't know how often BOINCStats pulls, but it is at least once a day. I don't know what time they pull as I will see various projects changing stats through the day.

As explained above, BAM! is pulling your account based on your login name/email address. The stats portion of BOINCStats pulls your listing up based on the CPID which is a unique identifier. The CPID is created when you create and account at a project. Each time you create an account it will generate one. Now you may ask how BOINC ties them altogether. When you attach your system/client to multiple projects, it will synchronize your CPID's so that it identifies you as the same person. So, there are times that you may show up twice at BOINCStats as if you were two different people. To fix that issue (which happens to the best of crunchers) is really simple. You just take one machine and attach it to all of your projects and the stars all align within a day or two.

The closest thing to a noobs thread would be the first post on the BOINC thread here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1783464

Then for setting up the client, I do have a how to guide with pictures walking you through setting it up under Windows and under Ubuntu (using the repository) here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1768558

Then there is another thread I have created in the guides section that if used properly holds a ton of resources here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1801908

Comparing points and such? Remember that project I tend to mention called WUProp? They have a link on their home page called Results. Let's just say, that is the whole purpose of the project. http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/delai.py

As far as getting WCG to show up under the My Projects, we have to figure out how to get BOINCStats to find your account. First you need to confirm that you are using the same email address and the same password for both WCG as you are using for BOINCStats.

Last batch of fresh work for FAAH should be going out any time. Then possibly a few weeks of resends before the project is finished. So, if you still have goals, hurry up and load up on work.

Hello all,

We've progressed through these batches at a slower rate than expected, so there are still about 7.5 days of work remaining before the supply of new batches is depleted.

Keep in mind even after the new batch supply is depleted there be another 2-3 weeks where resend work units will be available intermittently.

It looks like the next project to end will likely be MCM as the projections currently show it to be roughly 4 months to go. Just wanted to give a heads up in case anyone was planning badges or other goals.

This is just a reminder to those whom have set goals on MCM since it is the next subproject likely to end. According to those tracking the numbers in the forums, they are guesstimating it ending anywhere between September and November depending on current production levels. Since many people slow down their output over the summer (which I just had to do) it may delay the final result until November still. So, if anyone still has goals to meet, keep all of this in mind.

Thanks for the warning Gilthanis. I've switched my good 2p back and restricted my projects to MCM in an effort to hit my runtime goal there. I'll have to run the numbers and see if I need to bring my 4p out of its summer slumber or not to be safe.

Yeah... I just shut my (sc0tty8's) 4P down last night as the temps just got too high and I had to replace the 4p with an AC unit to help the central air keep up. I've already hit my goal as I have a 5 year goal for all sub projects. So, now it is all just extra fluff..lol

Yeah, I was thinking about a goal of 100 years runtime, however it looks like a longshot now and really only plausible if I fire up the 4p. That would be a real pain right now, so I'll have to think about it over the next couple days.

I guess I'll give it a go. I got the 4p fired up, but I clamped the power cap down tight. Thus power consumption dropped from 650W+ down to a hair below 400W. Performance is obviously terrible, but as I'm going for run-time right now...
