Official Acer [XB270HU] 27" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync IPS ULMB Monitor Thread

I calibrated my screen at 100hz with ULMB on. I think it looks pretty good. brightness is around 80~ (120cd/m2)

I did try gsync on accident with diablo 3 when I first got it. I didn't even know it was on until I felt input lag. I read somewhere you can get rid of any perceivable input lag though.

I might try the 144hz gsync at a later time, but would have to recalibrate my screen with ULMB off.

I need to plastidip the base of the monitor. The high gloss shit is pissing me off. Maybe see about spraying the bezel too while I'm at it.

If you can think of a way of doing the bezel, post it up! I don't have this monitor, but I have the XB280HK with the same chassis. Gloss is hideous and stupid... I was thinking maybe painters tape over the visible portion of the screen would be ample protection, but I'm not sure. I'd want to get the inside edges of the bezel too so that the screen itself doesn't reflect on it, if you follow what I'm saying.

FYI newegg just had them in stock and I grabbed one

Damn, I'm really angry right now, that was my only chance to grab one. I was under the impression Newegg's auto-notify was fast. I also set up Auto-notify to text me and it didn't do it.

you have to be signed in when you fill out the newegg auto-notify.

I received the email earlier but they were gone by the time i checked.

i am still going to wait for MC to get some in, there is no way i am getting Acer from online retailer.

Newegg just updated their page, they are taking backorders as of now which have a limit.

So if you want one within 2-3 weeks, order it now before they stop taking back-orders.

Beautiful. Thanks for the notice. I put mine on backorder. It's like Newegg heard my cries.

I'm going to return mine after only one day in use. I have 9 pixels stuck on red, 3 dead pixels and the ULMB mode stopped working after a few hours.

I also think the IPS glow and backlight bleed is way too much on this monitor:

ips_glow.jpg

I contacted the dealer to start an RMA but they advised me to get my money back instead as they had an unusual high amount of RMA orders on this monitor...

I guess i have to wait and see what products other producers will come up with. Either with this panel or the new one from LG which also includes an A-TW polarizer filter.

My verdict for this monitor:

+ G-SYNC is amazing
+ Good IPS colors and viewing angles

- Extremely poor build quality
- Very high amount of IPS glow
- VERY bad quality control!!
- 9 pixels stuck at red
- 3 dead pixels
- 1 dust particle between panel and coating (> 1mm)

Fortunately my old NEC wgx2 pro is still working flawlessly after 6 years in use and i still consider this to be one of the best IPS monitors when using it for both gaming and photo work.

I swore I had a dead pixel around that exact same area as well, then i wiped it and it went away lol

I can confirm this also! One of the 11 defective pixels was approx 5 mm from the right edge of the screen and ca. 1 cm above the clock.

LG,Display only have an A-TW polarizer option for their LM270WQ3 panel which is a wide gamut IPS panel. They don't have any current IPS panels with high refresh rate support sadly (although they've apparenty got a 1080p one coming later this year). The panel in this Acer is an AUO AHVA panel and they don't use polarizers like that to reduce off angle glow on dark content. Would be good if they did but can't see there being any low glow IPS type gaming panels for a fair while, if at all

.

Was that pic with your brightness at 100%? I'm going to have to switch my Newegg account to Premier and anticipate an exchange or two. Or maybe the next batches will have better quality control after Acer's warehouse getting word about the unusually high RMA amount.

Yes, sadly you're right. I misread the news on tftcentral :(

Then i'll wait and see if some of the other companies will make a monitor with this panel + g-sync with better build quality and quality control..

Compared to my old 20wgx2 this acer feels so flimsy and like it'll break in its seems just by touching it. I also don't like how the blue LED light bleeds out through all the buttons and you can easily look into the electronics at the LED. I wouldn't expect this for a monitor this expensive!

Also as i wrote in my earlier post: The ULMB mode just suddenly stopped working. If i enabled it it just changed the brightness but did not strobe the backlight. I tried disconnecting the monitor from power for a few minutes but that didn't help anything.

Such a shame for a monitor that could have been the best gaming monitor.

No, the brightness was 34 as i used the settings provided in the tftcentral review but found 24 to be a bit too low for my taste.

I also still have the monitor as i'm waiting for the return label so if you want me to take some other pictures i can do that. This was just taken with my lumia 930 phone but i also have a canon eos 450d camera which i can use.

This monitor seems to have some glow issues with the bottom right corner. You can check out mine on page 48 and I have the same problem as well, but luckily for me I checked for defective pixels for about 20 mins and couldn't find any, not even dust particles so returning it just for bottom right glow isn't worth it. Hopefully you win the panel lottery on the next one.

Wow I agree that 12 faulty pixels is excessive for $800. Needs to be a discount for that panel.

So I have really basic G-sync question but I'm gonna ask it anyways (first time with an nivida card in 10 years, and of course first time with g-syc)....

If I want my desktop refresh rate to be 60Hz, but my game refresh rate to go up to 144hz, do I just select 60Hz in the "Change Resolution" tab in the Nvidia Control Panel?

Erp, I suppose I could just load up a game that I know I can achieve over 60fps to see if I'm going up to 144fps.

Change to 60hz in the resolution option on the nvidia panel, but in the 3D settings, change your Refresh Rate option to "Highest Possible"

mine is from newegg. I know they have restocking fees too.. usually I buy from Amazon :(
I was thinking for this item it makes sense to get Premier. Only slightly more than double the price of their cheapest shipping option ($20) - guarantees you hassle-free returns with no restocking fees and free return shipping.

Just finished plastidipping the bezel of my monitor now as well as the base. Good bye piano black.

Here's after I wiped the dust and fingerprints off the bezel and used a few sheets of printer paper taped together (I would recommend 2 layers of paper so the aerosol won't lift the sheets up):

I just did 2 medium speed passes over everything and then 1 quick angled pass to catch the inner lip of the bezel where it meets the screen. Once the logos disappeared I knew I hit the right thickness.

With the plastidip still wet (30 seconds later) I pulled the masking off and then cleaned up whatever overspray got on the screen via a microfiber cloth and q-tips. It's not paint so it wipes right off.

No more logo or mirror finish:

Oh that's good. The orange peeling and the crooked line around the buttons made me think this monitor just got ruined.

Yeah it either peels or rubs off. Like xorbe said, a lot of people will use it to black out emblems on their car or as a cheap way to get non-permanent black rims. Some people paint their entire car with it, but it's hard to get even coverage and it takes a few hundred dollars worth of coats to make it look decent.

if its broken can i just pay for premier and then return it? restocking fee would be like 120$

Not sure if it works that way honestly. If it's broken I'm sure you can exchange it for free, but I'm sure it has to be a certain level of broken versus if you have Premier.

Ordered on monday from ShopBLT. No ETA yet but supposedly within 15 business days. It will kind of suck going back to 27 inch from 32, but I'm really sick of the issues of the 32" panels. Plus with 2 gtx980s i should get a higher refresh rate monitor to take advantage.

I just got mine from newegg. No dead pixels, minor backlight bleed. Very pleased!

I don't have a calibration tool, so i'll need to rely on profiles and settings conducted by others to base my own adjustments off of....

Is there a consolidated list of settings to change/modify? I've seen people talking about ULMB as well as settings for desktop vs nvidia control panel 3d settings. Also is there a list of contrast/brightness recommended settings? (If not i'll start combing through the previous 50 pages of posts...).

Thanks in advance!

What kind of performance would I be looking at driving one of these on a Gen 1 Titan? More concerned about not getting enough performance out of the Titan to make this worthwhile.

I thought newegg had warehouses in CA only now they got one in TN so I wish I bought faster shipping, gonna have to wait till Thursday it says :(

A single Titan X will struggle to get 144fps in games with everything maxed out. OG Titan probably wouldn't be able to keep up unless you start turning AA down.

I'm also looking for something like this. how do I test the monitor to see if its okay? (dead pixels, blacklight bleed, glow, etc)??

and how should i calibrate it, I've got no tools to do so. If I install an ICC profile, how do i uninstall it?

I just played TF2, and the motion clarity was amazing, and this is coming from someone who just moved from an OCd QNIX. it felt much better.

edit: also, the packaging said that the DP cable and USB cable is optional. I only got two cables in the box, the DP, and power, no USB. Is this normal?

For dead pixels I moved my icons off the screen, then set my background to full red / green / blue / black / gray and had a good look. (If there's a dead pixel in the task bar area I just don't care.) Bleed and glow should just kinda be obvious, either it's okay or there's a problem. I only got DP cable.

I think some people are a bit too eager for this display. It seems quite obvious now there are A LOT of build quality issues. I am sure later this year there will be a lot more competition, more brands, more options, and lower prices.

The only people really being vocal are the ones that are displeased; so I'll chime in with a happy case: my particular monitor came out pixel perfect with next to no glow. I couldn't be happier with it, it's just such an amazing monitor in terms of picture quality and features.
