Descent Underground

To answer some frequently asked questions;

*sigh, wont allow me to copy image....

DRM Free =Yes
Subscription Required = NO!

man I loved that game back in the day, but no way in hell I'll be caught dead throwing money at a kickstarter

The original Freespace was indeed "Descent: Freespace"
The second didn't carry that title. "Freespace 2"

And the team you're looking for is Volition - you know, of Red Faction / Saints Row fame. Unfortunately after being purchased by THQ they lost all rights to the IP and can no longer make Freespace games.

The lead devs of FS2 did a recent interview on Space Game Junkie.
SGJ Podcast #85- (Some of) The Brilliant Minds Behind Freespace 2
According to Adam Pletcher, Interplay still owns the Freespace IP. THQ just got paid the royalties from FS2. He didn't rule out a possible/crowd-funded FS3, but doubts Interplay will do it.

I loved Descent 1 & 2, but after Clang! crahsed and burned, I'm steering clear of crowd-funded games. I can wait for release.

Freespace was one of those weird Brian Fargo deals. Basically Interplay held the publishing rights. THQ via Volition held the I.P. (ship names, characters etc etc)

When THQ imploded Interplay picked up the remaining I.P. for 7,500.

I would not be surprised if we see a Freespace Kickstarter.

Far as Descent you can wait and pay retail i suppose.. :rolleyes:or pay 25 now.

I'm not kick starting this game, but after seeing the kickstarter for clang! I'm not surprised it never came out. Clang! kickstarter was not funding a game, they funded the development of a demo/prototype that they then showed publishers. Turns out no publishers wanted to bite. The facts were there on the page, but they weren't presented with the flashing red text they warranted.

Well, I finally caved (a few days ago) at the $30 level. But, it may not get funded on the kickstarter. They're 46% funded with 17 days to go - maybe hype will pick up on it and push it over.

The first week it looked good, I think it was over $150K. Its slowed down quite a bit. Right now looks like they were a little too ambitious.

I backed, and I hope this project gets funded. I think it's clear that the devs are responsive to feedback from the changes they've already made - inclusion of a Pyro-precursor, more focus on single player.

Will be a shame if this doesn't make it.

little surprising they stalled out on funding.

Maybe CiG should pick up the tab at the end of the campaign on the last day so they get funded lol.

CiG can just release a new ship skin to cover the expense lmao.

They have significantly updated the Descent Underground KS, Concept, Videos, etc. Looks like they are making a lot of progress and it really is worth funding and backing.

They have 3 days left to go on the KickStarter, and and can get fully funded if they just have a couple thousand more backers. So it's crunch time.

Check out the KS,

It's ticking off quick. I figure that they will hit it easily by the last day.

Are we hitting F5 on the same Kicktraq page every few hours?

There was a big jump this afternoon, looked like a whale dumped ~$10k in. As of this writing, the number of new backers is exactly the same today as yesterday, but the daily total is $13k higher than yesterday. This campaign isn't pulling in bodies, so the bodies it pulls in had better be whales.

The average back is $72, so they need 2,547 more backers to make goal. Though the kicktraq trend is toward 490k, with the right push at the last day or two, they can get those backers. The last 2 days are always a rush, and with the project likley to be "close" on the last day, getting folks to rally is needed.

The risk for pledging this one is really low. If it doesn't get funded, no one is out anything. And if someone just pledges the $25 for a game package, it is a really good deal since the game itself will be $50 retail at launch. The total dev time is less than a year anyways, with both alpha and beta options too, so the wait is short too.

I really think it is worth the money to back. I really enjoyed Descent 1, 2 and 3, and I think these guys are really going to capture the heart of how it should play and feel.

I would actually be a little disheartened if this doesn't get backed. Been a major fan of Descent since the beginning and still have boxed copies of 1 and 2, just a disc for 3... But totally awesome.

They should of settled for 500,000

48 hours to go........

They could of made it up with donations afterwards I played the original I think but it was a shareware version....

I'm sure they had no way of knowing where the funding would end up and simply made a best guess on what they needed as a base to make the game happen.

That said, they are at $466K and still have a day and a half to go. Lots of new backers. If they can get a few thousand more to back by end of project, they will have the 600K they need.

They put out a new info-video on the project, worth a watch;

I caved. And got the last Early Bird: Material Defender too.

$107,000 in just over 26 hrs to make goal. Fingers crossed.

Hopefully its funded, but part of me has some doubt that its going to make it.

EDIT: less then $50k away and 9 hours left. Looks like it could make its goal.

People in twitch chat waited 16 years for this game.... I think it's going to be true to the original they know the mechanics it's not just going to be branded Descent and have it something totally different.

Yeah glad Wingman got his game funded. would be a real downer for the team i bet to come off thje Star Citizen campaign, and then not get the funding for Descent. Also being so close to getting it funded as well.

It's down to $400 over

What is going on?

EDIT: Right after I clicked submit it was only $200 over.

could be a new troll tactic? pledge money to a project that barely gets funded than pull out before the climax? and trolololol at the failed kickstarter? can you pull out of a kickstarter pledge i have never pledged on kickstarter.

seems like a possible crap thing to do if you can.

it is back to 400 over with like 60 seconds to go

I funded it at the last 4 minutes guess suppose to register a account at Descent underground.

I tossed in $5 at the end, it was entertaining to watch the last hour where it would be $5000 over an then drop to just $2 over lol. That was worth at least $5. Just not a game I'm interested in but congrats to them, hope it turns out well.
