Deus Ex : Mankind Divided

Oh. Hmm. Interesting that people felt the boss fights were unfair. Near the end they begun getting harder, absolutely. But I never felt cheated out of it; losing a fight only motivated me to look for patterns or new ways to approach a fight.

As to the new one.. Oh boy. The hype is pretty intense right now. But i'll wait until I see it on Steam before placing any orders.

I'll be in for a copy even tho I didn't finish the last game. Got stuck on that stupid boss bitch and rage quit and never went back. Loved the game up til then though. Maybe I'll go back and try again. But yeah the boss fights fucking sucked. You've got a great story and atmosphere going on then a boss would pop up and bring the whole thing to a screeching halt til you figured out the particular patter needed to beat it. In general I hate bosses but the ones in HR were a little over the top.

In retrospect the bossfights weren't bad, they were challenging, yes, but not unfair. There were a set of rules, and you fought by them, I never felt the ai was cheating.

Hell most games nowadays don't even have bossfights, just some lame QTE sequence.

The problem with HR was it was too obvious it offered the choice fight/stealth/hack on a silver platter. In most levels the stealth entrance was more obvious than the direct approach. Which made it unrealistic, made every airduct feel like they were put there for the benefit of adam jensen. Also it took 10 seconds to get to a place on the "hidden" way, and it took 10 minutes to get to the same place using the "direct" route.

If they fix this issue with level design, and the worst inventory system ever, then this game could really live up to the original.

Could not agree more. Let me find this pic I made forever ago illustrating this fact lol

This post lol:

Yea, while the level design in DE:HR was good (especially when compared to other game's being released), they definitely cut some corners which they didn't for the original Deus Ex. Some of the ventilation systems you'd go into in DE:HR would be reeking of last-minute implementation... like during testing they realized that if you weren't a hacker, you couldn't get by this laser fence. So what did they do? This:

Don't get me wrong, there are some simple vent systems in Deus Ex, but nothing that stood out as lazy as this sorta shit in DX:HR...

Unless they do something royally stupid I'll be picking this up. If they give us similar play to the last one, with an enhanced engine, that would be adequate. If they make augmentation improvements and add flexibility to it, as well as making the characters move more realistically the game will be fantastic. The spastic way they moved in HR was very distracting to me. (especially during conversations) This should be good. I actually kind of liked the yellow filtering contrary to a lot of people on here. It gave it its own style. I really don't mind stylistic graphics. Realism is great sometimes, but if one can do something stylish, and still manage to immerse the player, I find it even better.

Minor quibbles aside, I felt that DXHR was a great game. Not perfect, but greatly enjoyable, and I will definitely be picking this up, as long as it continues to improve upon DXHR.

Yeah, my comments above were very minor quibbles. It was a great game. It just looked like most of the characters were cracked out because of the way they wave and shake their hands and heads around while they talk. :D

Oh, I definitely agree with you there. Some of the animation was odd, to say the least.

So awesome that Michael McCann will be back for the soundtrack. So much of the Human Revolution experience and mood was the music.

Oh snap, I hadn't caught that tidbit. Very good news.

Aaaand the news gets better! I was going to link to the page that had said "The Missing Link soundtrack is coming soon, check back this Spring!" for several Springs in a row, and now it says this:

Apologies for the very long (years!) delay in getting more tracks from Deus Ex: Human Revolution, DX: The Missing Link, and DX: The Fall on to this site and available to fans. Long story short, as of April 2015 this is now closer to becoming a reality, and this page will be updated more regularly over the coming weeks / months of April & May as to when this will happen.

Link. Really hoping this take on the UNATCO theme ends up on it.

Fuck yea! The music in DX:HR was great!

Man all this talk about DX... I should really go play all of them. I never did get around to playing IW

My most anticipated game for this year. I hope it takes everything good about HR, and improve upon it. But I really hope the story/theme isn't dumbed to Mass Effect 2 level.

O_O...

MFW this video game trailer is better than AAA movie trailers...

I can't wait. Loved HR. I won't preorder though.

That said, that trailer actually dulled my enthusiasm a bit. What's with the corny Eastern European villain? I enjoyed the writing in Human Revolution. I hope this one doesn't get bogged down in cliche.

I couldn't agree more. I'm a big fan.

That dude disappeared entirely off of social media for well over a year and then suddenly came out of nowhere today and shared this. I really was starting to wonder if he was ok.

I know he had done some music on that most recent X-Com game... I wouldn't mind having that soundtrack but I don't think it exists.

I'm stoked for this across the boards. :)

I'll be shocked if the game actually comes out in 2015...I'm thinking mid-2016

HOLY SHIT! That looked AMAZING! I don't think I'll preorder because I'm just usually against it. But that is damn freakin' impressive.

And... did I see an attack that jumps you into the middle of the fight? Wooo!

I really hope they don't bring back that dumbass eat-candy-bars-for-energy-to-take-out-enemies mechanic again. Awesome trailer, though.

I really loved Invisible War back in the day. I know I'm in the minority. The last bit of the game felt pretty meh, but up til then I liked it.

On the flip side, I couldn't get into HR at all for some reason.

I really liked HR. Looking foward to this one. Its also going to be DX12 as well, I'll be surprised if it releases this year. I think it will be spring of 2016.

Amazon shows December 2016 on the preorder page atm, though how accurate that is who knows.

I think Amazon does that a lot. Dec 31st most likely. It's what they do when they haven't a clue.

I finally gave in and just dropped the difficulty down to the lowest level and then finally killed that bitch boss with about 300 rounds from the heavy machine gun. Hate to stoop to that level but I need to finish this game so I can be ready for the new one.

The original and IW were both more styled as CyberPunk worlds, wheras HR was more CyberNoire, I personally loved the shift, but I can understand if it didn't gel with everyone.

Do what you gotta. ;)

I've gotten better at taking her down in more recent replays, but she's still annoying, esp at "Give me Deus Ex" level. I've given up and lowered the difficulty as well if I hit a wall on a given playthrough. Not worth the frustration.

I'm trying to resist doing a preorder on this, and its not easy because DX:HR is still one of my all time favorite games, even with its faults.

I just wish we had a more solid release date than "2016". :(

God aint that the truth. I never could figure out what exactly it took to kill her. She could kill you in seconds but I would go thru 400 rounds of heavy machine gun and over 100 rounds of shotgun and still not kill her. I tried watching a few Youtube videos and they werent much help. I dont have electricity immunity because Im a run and gunner and set up for combat so I couldnt do it the way they were showing. Dont know why in the world they would make a boss that freaking hard to kill. When I fired it up today the last date played according to Steam was August last year. Because of that stupid boss I almost gave up on this incredible game. Other than the bosses though, youre right, its one of the all time greats and the bosses are about the only thing I can find to bitch about.

Yeah I liked invisible war too. But I also liked the original and HR. So I pretty will like whatever they come up with

I never could make it more than a couple hours into the first game. I keep trying it because everybody tells me it's the best game ever but can't get into it. Maybe I'm the problem. I have a pathetic attention span and need games that are a little quicker to figure out and get into the meat and potatoes. Probably why I can't handle most RPG's.

Never found the bosses too hard. 2nd play through with Director's Cut was easier because I knew what I needed to have. EMP mine for the women boss if I recall. Dumped some heavy rifle rounds into her. Was over in about a minute if not less. Disturbingly easy. I was playing on the normal difficult setting.

I also didn't have a problem with any boss battles playing on the hardest difficulty.

I was doing a pacifist run first time I played. Of course on the vanilla version of the game you still had to fight the bosses. I read typhoon was overpowered so I put one point into it just for them. Wow, did it make those fights no challenge. Takes the fun out but it’s the “easy” way out even on hard. Unfortunately it’s not too helpful on the final boss.

LOL

I need to finish it too not sure how close I am....

Have attempted sending pm's to the subforum mods requesting a topic change to "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" but they don't appear to be going through. Anyone else care to try?

Stylistically the problem with HR for me, was it was supposed to be taking place before the events of DX1, but it was much more futuristic than that. It felt that it was taking place after even IW.

That said I don't even consider it to be in the same universe as the other two, it's a hard reset of the universe. The lame Nicolette Duclare and Bob Page references in it just made me laugh.

I'm personally excited for this. DX:HR despite it's faults was one of the best games of the year for 2011.

If we're going to nitpick, here is everything wrong with the game in the shortest synopsis I can drop possible (POSSIBLE SPOILERS, DON'T READ IF YOU STILL HAVEN'T MANAGED TO PLAY A 4 YEAR OLD GAME).

1.) Upgrades - Clearly there was an excellent upgrade path that made more sense than others. Getting skills that helped infiltration (starting with hacking, and double height jump, move heavy objects and moving into things that would gain your faster experience like double knockout or Casie) were far superior and more useful than other skills. Even if you were going to kill everyone and "run and gun" a non-attack upgraded Jensen could still kill everything just fine with some grenades/mines and an explosive revolver making most offensive upgrades worthless.

2.) Weapons - Had the same issue as the upgrade systems. Sure you could use any weapon to complete any given mission, but the Silenced Armor Piercing Zenith Pistol (silent way to kill everyone in the game), Explosive Revolver (bosses, or hell just eliminating anyone quick), Silenced Sniper Rifle, and tranq gun were absurdly good. No other weapons were necessary to complete the game flawlessly unless you wanted to be slightly more offensive and still silent (Crossbow for highest lethal/silent damage). There was a massive penalty for being noisy making the combat shotgun, machine gun, and machine pistol worthless. And other weapons like the grenade launcher and heavy machine gun were offered too late and took too much space to be optimal.

Certain areas I noticed this as well: if you used a lethal silenced weapon OR lethal single/double takedown on certain enemies, all of the rest of the guards would become immediately alerted. Whereas if you used the tranq gun or non-lethal takedown in the same situation, it was considered to be "completely silent". So when I wanted to play a fully lethal/silent game, I had to resort to using the tranq rifle on some enemies and non-lethal takedown to continue on silently. In other words some enemies would "cry-out" on death, which would be completely impossible if they got hit in the back of the head with a .45 bullet and died instantly. This, what I consider to be design fault, gives even more favor to non-lethal, silent weapons. I did these experiments over and over again doing reloads, and they are absolutely repeatable on both vanilla DX:HR and Directors cut.

3.) Penalties for being lethal/loud - If the game is really supposed to be about emergent gameplay and choice, being a killer in DX:HR took away some of that by penalizing you. "Merciful Soul" gave 10 more exp to the non-lethal player that the lethal player could never get. Additionally stealth was rewarded with exp bonuses while being noisy was not (Ghost, Smooth Operator). Considering the game gives massive advantages to the player the more exp they get (and hence more praxis points they have), unless you were doing a second/third playthough for fun, it's generally always better to be a stealth/non-lethal player for a perfect game.
I'm hoping systems like what are in the upcoming Uncharted 4 get into DX:HR as well, in which enemies will go back from their alarmed state to regular state faster and it's not just endless alarm and "forced reload" every time you get noticed for half a second too long.

4.) Optimal path and level design - Some of this has already been discussed, but certain levels gave enormous favor to stealth/hacker routes. Actually most of the game gave preference to stealth/hacker routes. But to their credit, it's hard as heck to get the level design just right for a game this diverse. Additionally on a positive note, each location in DX:HR does seem different and interesting. It doesn't feel like reskinned versions of the same places over and over.

Something I felt negatively about was actually the scale of most of the open world sections of the game. Detroit and Hengsha always felt too cramped. There is no way that cars could drive around on those streets. Basically everything felt like it was 1/3rd sized. I'm sure there were design reasons for that (like not having it take 3 times as long to walk anywhere), but creative use of space in those sections would have made the game feel more immersive (to me).

5.) Linear story - I think most would enjoy a bit more of an open world. However I've said this before and I'll say it again, I would much rather have a linear game that was executed well than a sandbox game that just takes a long time to complete arbitrarily. DX is tight and well executed and for how much money/time they had I think they made excellent design decisions in regard to this. Besides SE was trying to tell a specific story, which is nearly impossible to do with a non-linear game.

6.) Bosses - Weren't nearly as bad as everyone says. Most can be killed with mines/grenades and an explosive revolver without much effort. Director's Cut makes them even easier for other variations of players.

Despite these faults, DX:HR has some of the most immersive and fun gameplay of any game I've ever played. It's one of the few new (at the time) games I've played in the past 10 years that warranted a second play through. Great voice acting, lots of fun mini-missions, great MGS like stealth sequences (which can lead to absolutely game-breaking shenanigans [I consider that a pro from a fun perspective]), amazing atmosphere, and overall great design decisions. The graphics are excellently stylized, maybe not Crysis level, but to people that allow themselves to just enjoy the visuals for what they are rather than nit-pick they are phenomenal. The sound design and music design are top notch adding to the immersiveness of the game. Few titles sound this good.

The game is imbalanced to those that know the game well and know which weapons/upgrades are the most optimal, but it's hard to find any game with RPG-like systems that's not imbalanced. It has a great blend of RPG conversation, action, and stealth. And despite its shortcomings it's definitely on my shortlist of favorite first-person games whether RPG or otherwise.
If you haven't played it already, it's definitely worth playing. Even talking about it makes me want to fire it up again.

===

I'm looking forward to the next game. If it's the same caliber as DX:HR then it's for sure worth every penny. If they somehow manage to improve on the formula (which is reasonable) then it will phenomenal.

I started a new play through tonight. :D

I know we've got a year before we see the new one most likely, but I had nothing else I wanted to play lately and this was as good an excuse as any to fire it up again.

This new one is seriously making me consider breaking my "no more preorders" pledge, but we'll see.

Actually I started playing it too just a week ago, I've had the directors cut in my library since it was released, but I only ever played the original version.

So far it's better than I remember, or maybe it's the directors cut, but I don't know how much is actually different in it.
