Philips BDM4065UC - 40" 4K 60Hz monitor thread

I'd love the 4k for productivity; the 34" ultrawides are so tempting, but this running 21:9 is possible, so its hard to buy an ultrawide.

This is what I'm considering as well. Think of how much code you can fit on a 40" 4k screen!

if a game can't run on ultra I can try the snazzy 21:9 aspect ratio or use it as an excuse to buy me another card.

I cant wait for the US release on Amazon...curious if philips rev'ed the panel prior to the US release.

I hope the single 780ti will keep me happy until the next generation of cards :) I wanted to skip the 900 series on the desktop, I already bought a 980m laptop.

I'm in the same boat as you. Still thinking if I will need to upgrade my 780ti or get another 780ti for SLI or just wait for the eventual 980ti. I will worry about it after I get the monitor from Amazon. :)

worst case scenario just run at 1080p and get blind drunk so you can't see the difference.

Man, I registered here because of this thread. I was lurking it for several days, and have been doing tons of research into new monitors. I discovered the Philips and found this thread.

Then today, I finally ordered my BDM4065UC from Amazon for $799 +tax, free shipping. Came out to $875.99. Amazing price!

Then, literally five minutes later, I checked the product page, and Amazon now lists it at $1,235, and is no longer eligible for free shipping. Holy crap. I got in right on time. I guess my order prompted them to fix their amazing price. XD

My delivery estimate is Thursday, April 16, 2015 - Wednesday, June 3, 2015 by 8:00pm. I also ordered that tall pole desk mounting arm and 200mm VESA adapter. So stoked! =D

Still $799, it just is showing a 3rd party seller. Look for the sold by amazon item.

For 4K you should be looking to maintain crossfire/SLI of at least two flagship single-GPU cards to maintain very high / ultra settings in most games. I'm talking about the normal flagships (980 and 290X for current generation, 290X soon to be replaced by 390 series around June 2015), not halo products like Titan X. They're great, but if you were interested in spending that much money you probably wouldn't still have your single 780ti.

This may seem bad on the wallet at first, but consider that Eyefinity/Surround 2560x1600 users should ideally be using at least one flagship per monitor (trifire or better for triple 2560x1600 monitors, quad for 5x 2560x1600 monitors in portrait orientation). For 4K Eyefinity (triple 4K monitors), quadfire is pretty much mandatory and expect to have many issues and disappointments depending on the game. But guys spending that much on their displays have no right to complain about the cost of driving them, kinda like Ferrari owners complaining about the maintenance fees.

Above is all just IMO though. If you're fine with lowering game settings or are playing older games, you can definitely squeak by with your 780ti for as long as you want. Always upgrade your displays first and then upgrade your system to drive the display. Your monitor is far and beyond the most noticeable upgrade you can make to your system, even above upgrading from an HDD to an SSD (though only slightly)...

My experience with 4k is pretty simple, if you want to play recent games at 4k, you need SLI/Crossfire, which pretty much means SLI of 970 or crossfire of 290x (anything above is too expensive for the performance).
Either way it's going to be a very temporary piece of hardware, 1 to 2 years at most, at which point is more than time to sell those cards, and hope that a die shrink has come around, and there is something that can do 4k in a single card.

I would have to strongly advise against SLI of 980's, the price performance just isn't there, and I really see current cards for 4k as a very temporary solution, so kind of a waste spending that much money for such a minor difference.

If one is willing to go with the ultrawide resolution then a single 970/290x or SLI/Crossfire of some older cards, is an actual real possibility, and honestly advisable as a way to wait for cards that can handle 4k better.

My apologies if this has already been answered previously. If you buy it from Amazon with Amazon as the seller (the $799) one, is it shipping from Korea and will come with the korean power plug and OSD?

No, it's the supposed US release of the monitor, which is why none of those are shipping yet. If it was the Korean version, they could ship them out now. Which is what this seller is doing.

Thank you. Been waiting for a real US release of this baby and if I can't get solid confirmation on the Samsung JU6700's input lag and it's ability in doing 4:4:4 chroma at 60hz then I'll pull the trigger on this instead as that price is too tempting.

Am I crazy wanting this with a single 780ti? Anyone tried 4k with it?

I see no harm in trying out what mileage you get - worse case you can run the monitor with a "21:9" format or even resort to 1080p if a specific game really suffers and then add more graphics horsepower when the budget allows. In non-gaming scenarios you will certainly see the benefit of the big screen with your 780ti.

Personally I'm staring out with a Radeon 7970 and while it certainly won't be magical I hope it will see me through till the next generation graphics cards (I have a perhaps naive hope that AMD will bring something good soon). Until then I may have to resort to the alternate resolutions mentioned or just playing good old Civilization.

I ordered mine on 13th of February (Europe). Still waiting, but now I'm having second thoughts about canceling it and going with the Samsung TV for the curve, as it looks like 40" model JU6700 will support chroma 4:4:4 and presumably should offer at least decent input lag..

Hmm.. What to do? I'm torn. Need more info on those sammy's ASAP.

Wow - if the Samsung can do 4:4:4, I think I might have found my new display...!

My bro works for Philips and he tried getting a discount on this monitor. He was told that Philips just licenses their name to a korean company. They do not actually make any tv's or monitors so he can't get a discount on this unit.

Not stopping me from buying one but interesting fact.

Hmm, maybe that is why the monitor is so readily available in Korea..

Do you happen to know which company?

The reason why china and Korea have ample access to it, is because it was released there significantly before it was released in Europe, also they aren't manufactured in Europe.
The panel is made by TP Vision , part of TPV Technology, just like philips is at least partly owned by TPV, so the panel is about as philips as it gets these days.
There is OFC the possibility that the panel is manufactured in Korea, but yeah the panel is definitely not made by a Korean company.

Cool Samsung TV, but without the Displayport, it's almost a certainly not 4:4:4.

There's no where on any spec sheet that this is a HDMI 2.0 TV.

I will be surprised for a 2015 model to not have at least 1 HDMI 2.0 port.

Though Samsung tried to pull a fast one on the 8550 by replacing a mainboard chipset inside from a 4:4:4 capable to a non 4:4:4 capable even though it's the same model number.

40" JU6700 seems to be available now - no one has gotten one to see about 4:4:4 and input lag?

does this look matte?

it looks like you're practicing tai chi :D

I just pee my pants. Holy shit, you're right, it's now at $1235. So I got mine 1 just in time too.

Having said that, other US on line site is listed this at $850 or so

Is it normal that I am getting head aches after gaming 1-2 hrs on this monitor on SRGB mode which is set to 100% brightness.

100% brightness is very, very bright (280 cd/m2), so yes.

If you're setting it to 100% to avoid PWM, it's not worth it.

Why is it not worth it?

Also I am only using SRGB because I seem to find it the best quality, I could not customise the settings and be satisfied with it. Might try again.

Hey guys how are people creating these 21:9 aspect ratios on this screen? Ive seen some pictures of this monitor in that custom ratio ? Ive looked through Nvidia control panel and gone in custom resolutions but when i make my own to simulate that ratio it looks really bad quality ? These for example http://i.imgur.com/JKqRduy.png[/img https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7569/16101660396_329c62dedb_z.jpg

I've used 3840x1607 custom res and it looks sharp. 3440x1440 does look a bit blurry.

TBH This is not a Samsung thread.
HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 eh? Good luck with that.

Who needs luck when there's concrete evidence in the threads I linked? The JU7100 also has HDCP 2.2.
I'm glad you realize this is the Phillips thread, maybe now you'll stop spreading FUD about it here.

Back to the Phillips, it sounds like EU stocks are running out everywhere now! Wondering if they have some supply problems, or if defects are becoming a problem. Hopefully this doesn't delay our US orders too much :(

Id be ok with using it as 21:9 (custom res) and ultra w/o AA or high with it. Someone used this is 21:9 way back in this thread. Curious how it would work...

I'd love the 4k for productivity; the 34" ultrawides are so tempting, but this running 21:9 is possible, so its hard to buy an ultrawide.

It works great, I set a custom res in CRU. Sorry about the crappy photo.
