Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

early bird already sold out! oops. sold the last 100 in the time it took me to read up on their page. still plenty at $30. I think i'll pass on this one for now too, plenty of other games to play and I never played the original. looks like a great project though, and with those guys running it you know you'll get great regular updates and really get your money's worth.

Decent always made me motion sick, but I saw it this morning and did the Early Bird, might upgrade to the Commander level later on, but for now this is enough.

So im in the fence after the PAX presentation and playing the module with the free pass. After playing the game the amount of pure detail in those ships is incredible and the game is definitely not vaporware at this point. My only problem is "value".

At this time how do ships even work in the actual full game? Do I start out with none? Is that $45 ship equivalent to one week playing? One month playing? I know the release of the final persistent universe is way out, but how can I make an informed buying decision with none of these questions answered.

Most of that is TBD with only discussions to guess on. There's no real reason you need to decide right now on anything. As far as I'm concerned this thing is still in the true believer stage (I'm one). If you want to jump in just to follow along or you really like the couple things you have tried out, then the cheapest way to do it is just to buy the package but there's nothing wrong with waiting.

There's a lot to figure out about the economy and balance. I'm sure like any player interaction game, the balancing will go on in perpetuity as well. Don't feel like you have to do anything until you want to keep playing something you've seen.

Looks like a couple of devs have now mentioned in messages and chat that 1.1 is not coming today and is delayed until later this week. They are not calling it a delay, because they never had a firm or "locked down" release day of course, despite what Chris Roberts said on stage and what was posted in the design post on the weekend. When is CIG going to learn, never ever mention a date or a more specific time frame, it always comes back and bites them.

To be fair Chris wasnt certain it would come out tuesday, its what he was hoping for tho.

he said he wanted to use monday for an extra day of testing and if everything goes well it will come out on tueday.

something along those lines.

although i really do not care too much when it comes out as long as it is before the free weekend where everything is flyable.

I saw the post on the RSI website for Crowfall and Descent. I backed Crowfall right away lol, I was never a fan of Descent originally, (I did love the freespace stuff) but I see they got Rob working over there now which makes me a little more interested and feel better in backing it. I'll probably just keep an eye on it and see how it goes for a few weeks though.

Dammit, they got the rights to Descent?

Guess it's time to back my second game kickstarter. You know, since the first one is going so well :p

EDIT: I'm really, really tempted to throw an embarrassing amount of money at this, but I'm really bummed by the lack of SP.

Someone posted this in the SC forums, Gladius hit by 3 missiles at once, surprised the wings stayed on.

Yay, Gladius is getting a buff in 1.1 LIVE :D Size 2 fixed or size 1 gimballed wing mounts!

Try it during the free fly, 1.1 should be out by then and changes should be in place by then.

I did one for the gladius, but I'll have to do another when things go live. It was really underwhelming with size1 guns.

ESP is also pretty broken on the test server, so that might have contributed to the bad feel.

There is going to be an event over the weekend that will let you fly all AC fly able ship, try it before you buy it. Also additive strafe is a cross the board, not just the Gladius so make sure to compare it to you 325a in 1.1 LIVE.

How well does Star Citizen control with a keyboard and mouse? Thinking I will try the trial but not about to buy a joystick just for a trial. I remember Tie Fighter/Xwing mouse controls were bad, you had to keep picking up your mouse and moving it up to keep diving.

mouse control is fine, i dont use it personally.

but it is one of the better control methods atm.

Cool, sry busy at work, otherwise I would have linked 'em. I have a Cutlass Blue in my inventory that my friend gave me, he might owe me for some work I did on his PC get a Cutlass Black off him I can use to unmelt my second LTI Gladius and CCU it to a Black and upgrade it to the Blue.

Yeah i was thinking about all the ships i have melted earlier with lti, i can pretty much get any ship i want with lti that is over $80

I believe i have 5 different melted LTI Heralds, and 1 LTI Gladius, 2x LTI Khartu-AL's

which pretty much means no matter what i plan to spend as long as the ship is over $80 i could LTI it at some point.

My melted Super hornet is a 2-year insurance one with a $155 value, if i just get a super hornet upgrade in the future when they go on sale again. I then unmelt a herald and wait for the herald CCU to hornet then apply the super upgrade so its lti it will cost $10 more than my 2 year insurance one since it should be $165 for a super but i think that is a better choice.

I can do that for anything i want really. the only ships i cant get lti on are the ones inside my Omega packages so i do not think i want to CCU them too far, and i dont have much interest in any of the ships under $80.

The one Omega pack that is an Avenger i will likely just continue it on its path to a limited Avenger, and the one that is a Delta, i am not sure, might just keep it a delta, and then focus on resurrecting some LTI ships for CCU.

I will likely unmelt my Gladius first and keep it a gladius, then a herald for the hornet plans. then have to see from there, i think my last and final hail marry before crowed funding campaign ends will be if i want to spend the 350 to unmelt my LTI reclaimer.

Wait, wut!?

From one of the devs:

As I have already said, I would not count on this. The game compression and asset removal is unlikely to yield such high gains that we will be able to reduce our client size to 30-40gb. The size and number of assets that are left to deliver means that our client size is much more likely to be 100gb.

Also, yes we are optimizing game patching for speed and to only deliver diffs, but this is unlikely to reduce actual patch size. Again, each patch has 100s of assets, each of these assets are at times 200mb, this leads to 2-6gb patches, and if we end up doing a file type re-factor and have to re-download 30-40% of the assets on the hard-drive, then the patch will be 14-20gb.

Anyone who expected this game to be any less than 80GB is delusional.

Finally a game that uses a PC to its fullest extent and not sacrifice quality for dirty console peasants.

Seeing as he mentions the goal being to 'make a universe, not a game' i'm not surprised the size ends up being at least double that of todays biggest games.

yea I do not see that large size as a bad thing. It means we are getting tons of high fidelity content.

Lemme guess, the cool guns like that are $500 and all of you guys are going to buy one :D

Is the "barrel clamp" an extra $15 or is it included?

Depends on how truthful that statement is. Unnecessarily large games is just another form of unoptimization. That being said I do think Star citizen will be rather large. If 100GB, that would certainly be massive. SSDs need to drop in price by 400-500% at this rate to be viable HDD replacements. :p

i wonder how much SQ42 will add to it or if it was included as that could be a nice chunk of hdd space as well with all the dialogue and other things, granted most of the content will be shared with star citizen but not all of it will.

I expect it to be 120GB+ by the time the PU is out. SC has two major game modes and assets that are a step up above what we have in current games. SSD prices are subject to Moore's Law and have been dropping accordingly so we should be good. I'm looking forward to the PCIe versions as they should be even faster than what we have seen with the SATA SSDs and no need for RAID.

I have one of these. I don't really see a difference.

An ESP toggle! Finally. I've gotten around it with the custom input curve so far, but it was really painful in PTU 1.1 where that workaround was broken.

I wonder if you can uninstall Squadron 42 when you're done with it. Or just download Squadron 42. Obviously there is some content overlaps but with such large sizes it would be nice if you could choose which portions of the game you wanted to have installed.

They haven't been dropping fast enough. 500GB drives still seem to be $400. :( I really do hope there is a massive break through/price drop to make them closer to $100.

Good 250GB drives are regularly on sale for $99 and 500 models get around $200 frequently, check the Hot Deal forum.
