Facebook announced today that it will remove likes from people who have deactivated their accounts or have died. So far, there have been no complaints from the people that died, have deactivated accounts or both. ;)

"It's important to remember...that these removed Likes represent people who were already inactive on Facebook," the company said in a blog post. "Everyone benefits from meaningful information on Facebook."

Excuse me, how are likes meaningful information.

I suspect it is targeted at subject matter pages. Although likes may not mean much per se they are an indicator of a particular subject page's interest level. I am sure that Boo (the Internet's cutest dog) gets some benefit from the 17 million users who have liked his page. Reducing that number to 16.7 million might not mean a whole lot but it doesn't hurt Facebook to police their system periodically ;)

up to date data trends = $$$
out of date data trends = $

How do you think FB makes their money again? Advertising?

They sell your data, and the companies buying it are wanting it to be current so they can more easily market to you... YOU.. YOU

The next logical step would be an aging system. Perhaps likes could have something of a half-life.

I feel that every time they change the way that their site functions, the less data they actually collecting, but are rather creating. They've experimented with swaying emotions, I don't doubt they sell 'bad' data to their real customers, using less than honest methods.
