Half Life 3 almost confirmed?

With all the hardware coming out later this year it should be a very interesting E3. I think we will definitely see some games being showed off on Source 2.... Most likely HL3 as one of them.

I just don't understand why they wouldn't be working on HL3 they have a HUGE fanbase that wants it. JUST TAKE OUR DAMN MONEY!

Fuck Valve. Seriously. Fuck them. Is there anyone here that doubts they did this on purpose to the community? Gabe and his crew know very well the mythical status of HL3, and how they're all a bunch of conspiracy theorists... So then you say you are going to have a nnouncment for something at 3pm on 03/03 and this is what we get? Steam Machines and Source 2?

Source 2 is a marginally okay announcement, because if any of you remember Half Life 2 was not the first game to use Source. It was Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines. So, they could still be working on HL3 but i'm officially annoyed that they picked yesterday to announce what they did just to fuck with us. GDC is a 5 day event... and they chose the 3rd.

Now I am sure once people start getting their hands on the Source 2 SDK, we will start seeing (theoretical) references to HL3 all over the place in there and the conversation will renew.

I think announcing any new game now will only overshadow everything else that Valve announced at GDC including Source 2.

I certainly hope Valve is working on something that will show off Source 2, though depending on when glNext will arrive, we might not hear about it for the time being. Any new game would have to wait for the arrival of glNext first I'd imagine.

Exactly!! At this point I have a deep hatred for this company. They know what we want, yet continue to ignore us.

if Valve announces any new ip's they are working on instead of HL3 the internet will turn against them...they've built up a decade or so of free passes due to the Steam platform but eventually they're going to have to pay the piper

Or what? If they introduce a new IP then people will just swarm to it the same way they have with every other game that's come out of the company since HL2. No one's going to stop using Steam just because the next big thing doesn't turn out to be HL3. L4D, Portal etc weren't big successes just because they had banked a lot of good will on the back of HL (although the fact that Valve hasn't produced a game which didn't start out as a third-party project in nearly a decade is another story).

At this point, Valve can do whatever the fuck they want to do. It sucks, but all we can do is whine and make fun of Gaben, and hope that someday they bother to make a HL3 that doesn't suck.
I'm certain they eventually will (or someone else will, a la DNF) but I wouldn't even venture a guess when.

Gabe is the new George Lucas or James Cameron...always waiting for new technology to catch up to his vision

I actually laughed out loud at this at work.

ditto.

HL2 is a good game. But it was never epic imo. Generic shooter with an Awful story. I'm more excited for a L4D3 then HL3.

Yeah that's just like your opinion man. (Trying hard to start a flame war)

Over the last couple days I've been trying to figure out why HL2 is so revered and I think I did. It's a good shooter. Since I don't play shooters, I bought CODAW to see what shooters are like today and it's pretty awful. I felt like it was run around and press F to win. So in the genre of shooters, HL2 is good. In the context of gaming overall, it's a mediocre game. That has more to do with shooters being a mediocre genre than anything else though.

Bottom line, gamers need to expand into other genres and step away from crappy shooters.

Shooters are not a mediocre genre. They just need more innovative around gameplay and story telling.

I wouldn't doubt that the date wasn't intentional. It seems Gabe loves to troll and/or stir up free publicity because this stuff always goes viral. Leak a pic (or app, etc.) and watch it go viral.

I'd agree with that. But that defends my point. 30+ years of shooters and it's barely evolved. It's just recently that bullets can even penetrate balsa wood and that's not even standard yet. Hey guys, I got a styrofoam cup, we're safe behind it. It's the least immersive genre I can think of.

I'm honestly surprised we're still talking about Valve and Half Life in the same breath, as if something will happen.
