While I agree with what this guy is saying, as long as people keep paying high prices, why should Apple charge less?

Of course, providing a service for free doesn't mean you don't profit from it in myriad ways. But still, Pichai wanted to underline that there's something creepily elitist about Apple. He said: "It's a bit irresponsible to say everything should be many hundreds of dollars [as most Apple products are]."

google is on my shitlist until they pull their stock price back up

What's irresponsible about it? Consumers are willing to pay for the brand, so they might as well keep charging more.

Does anyone know why all of these high-up, alleged tech geniuses are constantly spouting the most inane, idiotic shit?

Translation: I wish we could sell everything for the same profit levels.

Translation: I wish we could sell everything for the same profit levels.
or more like: nothing over here, nothing over here, there's no rabbit in my hat

(rough translation of: we give all our services away for free, freeeeee I tell ya)

Apple is smart, even poor people have iPhones. I am sitting here with my used Nexus 4 ($200) on $20 month unlimited everything (3gb high speed) Cricket Wireless (AT&T MVNO) maxing out my retirement savings and on path to retire early.

If I charge 5 dollars for a bottle of tap water you can get for free it might be unethical but the only irresponsible person is the one who buys it when they have an alternative ... are Mercedes more irresponsible than a Hyundai (since they are more expensive) ... are Rolex more irresponsible than a Timex (since they are more expensive) ...

companies should charge what they think the market will bear ... if they market won't bear it then they charge less ... if the market buys it then they made a good decision ... Google collects from their users in many non-monetary ways ... some people might consider that more irresponsible than a company who sets a price and lets people purchase their product at that price, or not, depending on their own personal choice ;)

curious what kinds of services google gives away for free that apple charges for?

I'd like a free google phone (nope)
wish Apple gave away email (oh, they do)
or their OS (oops, they do that too)

webkit? (ouch, not only giving away for free, but google piggybacks off their development)
html5 (who took the heat for pushing flash out of favor?)

really, seems bizarre

google calling someone else elitist? are we in bizarro world?

The problem is that since you are the responsible one and try to save, you'll end up paying for all the poor people who spent all their money on the latest iPhone, expensive plans, etc.

Just wait until they retire, and the government starts taxing your 401k, or starts printing money again, causing inflation and making your retirement savings worth less.

Apparently Pichai missed school when free market economic principles were discussed.
Or he's just lying through his teeth.

Nobody says "everything should be many hundreds of dollars...".

If Apple's products didn't sell at their current price point, they would be forced to drop their prices, just like any other company.

It's not magic, it's marketing.

There is no product provided by Apple that doesn't have a less expensive alternative.
Nor is there an Apple product that one could sanely consider a neccesity.

As others have stated, he's probably just jealous or attempting to ignore Google's market dominance in the arena of their choice.

Says Google, a company that was selling a shitty $1500 computer that you wear on your face; if they accept you as a customer.

Funny, I have enough responsibility not to buy a $1300 laptop, or a $600 phone just because it has a piece of fruit as a logo.

Isn't it disingenuous to say they "give away" the OS when you have to pay a substantial premium for their hardware? They are hardly giving away those macbooks!

Maybe some of us already gave Android a shot and didn't like it? I prefer iOS after using Android and Windows Phone alternatives over the years. For me it's a better platform and the iPhone itself is built really well and still places at the top or very near it in performance metrics. I don't care for replaceable batteries (my battery life lasts more than a day) or sd cards. Plus top unlocked Android phones like Galaxy Note cost just as much or close to an unlocked iPhone. Seems to me this guy is just salty that Android is (rightfully) viewed as a cheap alternative.

I guess I am irresponsible for buying the $1300 laptop. I actually like most of the apple products. I don't buy a new laptop every year (even 2 or 3) and I don't feel like I have to. I am also not going to buy a laptop or a phone if I can't pay for food/shelter/clothes for me or my dependents.
I do have a MBP and I do have an iPhone but when I bought them I felt that their price was substantiated for my usage and how long I expect to have them. Not all predominantly Apple users are reckless and dumb. I don't think all Android users are cheapskates or smart for that matter. I just think for myself and use what makes me happy.

Yes, I like cheaply made Chromebooks with Atom processors. I'd take that anyday over a MBP.

But abusing people's privacy by tracking their every move for the purposes of exploiting them into becoming the very product you sell is perfectly acceptable, as long as those involved don't pay you for it.

Fuck Apple, but welcome to business, Google. You charge what you can get. The market has accepted that cost.

It's irresponsible to charge $4.50 a gallon of gas, too. Didn't stop them from doing it.

Don't get me started on government costs. Damn, they overspend on everything. I'm a frugal guy, and I hate seeing them spend a ton of money when it could be done for half the cost.

What is irresponsible are other companies not charging enough.

Apple and Samsung are the only companies making money selling smartphones, and most of that is Apple. Samsung is the only Android handset manufacturer making money because they're the only one that sells a decent amount of flagship devices.

Everyone else is actually breaking even or losing money. Motorola, LG, HTC, its all race-to-the-bottom prices mostly selling substandard product. This is what is actually harmful to the market, not having self-respect pricing your product appropriately.

So Google makes how much money by exploiting people through advertisements? Is it responsible to store vast quantities of mined information for all of time on server farms that have to be internet-connected?

It's kinda revolting for a company that does everything possible to collect and monetize to attempt to present this facade of social responsibility that pretty much on one is stupid enough to believe after their attempt to turn people into walking camera tripods with Glass blew up in their faces. I highly doubt that anyone is going to believe the company doesn't answer to shareholders who are demanding Google act like any other profit-maximizing corporate entity.

It's not like Apple is manufacturing medicine or water filters or something people need to survive. Apple has almost always charged way more than their hardware is worth and has always been a ripoff compared to other alternatives out there. Calling them irresponsible is like calling jewelry manufacturers irresponsible. Except for people who are at the mercy of an industry lock-in for their job, spending money on Apple has always been a "a fool and his money are soon parted" situation.

Shh, the average dipshit doesn't realize how easy it can be.

Sitting at ~65% savings rate here. How long do you have left?

The biggest problem is Apple is sitting on a HUGE hoard of cash, an unprecedented amount. So much so that it doesnt make sense for them to continue to charge so much. Everyone is starting to ask why. They arent even doing anything with their money, its just sitting there. WE call that greed. I like the build quality of Apple prodcts, but some of their pricing needs a massive adjustment, especially memory.

If someone steals my Chromebook, i can replace it for less than the price of APPLECARE alone. And its performant. I use a 7" win 8.1 tablet with 16 GB flash and 1 GB ram I bought for $59. HP sells one for $79/$99. Most people do not need the power a mac provides. Atom is great for serving the needs of most at a reasonable price.

Those Windows tablet thingies are really nice when it comes to price. In fact, they're a lot cheaper than most Chromebooks so Google's pretty much lost the price war for now when it comes to racing to the bottom and I personally would muuuch prefer one of those things over a Chromebook because there's no Google to dig through my data or monitor what apps I use and websites I visit. I think the Winbook TW802 is probably the best option though since it has 2GB of RAM and a full sized USB port in addition to the microUSB charging port.

This is a stupid comment from Google. Is it irresponsible for BMW, Mercedes, Rolex, etc to not have "affordable" products? This is a capitalist society. Supply and demand. People are allowed to vote with their dollars (or Euros, etc).
As a shareholder of APPL - keep up the good work!

What Google's really lamenting is that their customers don't have the same level of gullible fanboyism that Apple's customers do so they can't get away with fleecing them the way Apple does.

I think the TW802 is overpriced compared to HP's offering. The main strengths of the Winbooks are the PORTS. Lovely real full size PORTS!

Well, the Stream 7 from HP, which I like because I think the smaller screen is probably better for the form factor, was priced at $99 which is the same as the current price for the TW802 on MicroCenter's site. The Stream 7 has only 1GB of memory though and I think that's kinda a big disadvantage in addition to not having the extra USB port.

You know that saying of "A fool and his money are soon parted" Well, yeah... you see, Apples thrives off those fools.

The mobile industry is like a car dealership that caters to both the savvy customers and the unaware. The savvy will aim to pay below invoice for a higher model while the dealership preys on the unaware and charges over invoice for a lower model. Any phone with only 1GB DRAM isn't high end but more like low end. Just like a 1GB DRAM netbook isn't premium but it's not illegal to claim otherwise or prey on the unaware. So, the question begs how do you tell the savvy from the unaware. One will brag about how much he saved while the other will brag about how profitable the dealership is.
