Want Google Fiber to come to your area? Google says your town should "do more to get it." That little TW jab was pretty funny too. ;)

“If you make it easy, we will come. If you make it hard, enjoy your Time Warner Cable,” Milo Medin, VP of Access Services at Google Fiber told a Washington D.C. audience on Tuesday.

I'm in Austin and Google wants me to go and do their work for them and go door to door and advertise to my neighbors when we already get Gigabit from AT&T for less money. Sorry Google, we're not all getting down on our knees and bowing down to become your advertising mules.

Google has become just another new money cesspool of greed and lust for power. Typical. And how fast the corruption took over! Gotta love greed fueled capitalism.

Ugh, don't remind me about that, I've been contemplating moving down to Austin after visiting a few times for SXSW & ACL.
Just curious how much does home GB service from AT&T run? (feel free to PM if it's against ToS for the forums, or if you just don't want to blast it on a public forum or whatever; or not and I can get my lazy ass to look it up myself hehe)

If you'd bother to read the article, they were basically complaining about the municipal authorities making things difficult, not the customers. Google has a valid point as most providers have sweetheart deals in place to prevent someone like Google from entering a market to compete. Maybe if you spent as much time lobbying your city/county/state asshats as you did trying to blame Google then you wouldn't be getting left out.

umm..... Google has been that way for years. WAY before their fiber project.

What Google services do you have and which do you pay for?

Pretty sure they are not greedy.....they are wanting to make changes and stir chit up. I think you're just paranoid.

It's $100 if you don't want them doing deep packet inspection. Which IMO everybody should pay extra to avoid. I think it's $70 if you allow them to know everything you are doing. Not a fan of AT&T, but google gets advertising benefit from offering you internet, so AT&T is doing it via different means than just cookies. $100/month for gigabit is not expensive by any means IMO.

Also all these comments about google being greedy are funny. It's nobody's responsibility to give you fast internet. They are doing it so they can make money. Same goes for everything else in life. Gotta love the entitlement attitude though. Internet is pretty damn cheap for what all you can use it for. <Steps off soap box>.

I'd gladly pay that. $100 is roughly $125 month in Canada. I'm currently paying $105/mo just for 100mbps down/5mbps up.

$25 extra per month is dirt cheap if I could get those kinds of speeds.

Awesome, that's not too bad for true GB service, heck I only pay $40 right now for charter cable and it's not too bad but I am sure ot[H]ers like me enjoy multitasking and would actually use the bandwidth.

I remember reading about the deep packet inspection, and I would definitely pay the extra to have that service "turned off" rofl. My question now is how do you know if they don't do the deep packet inspection when you pay the extra? Is there a way to confirm? Or is it more a business PR cover your own ass "they paid extra for net neutrality, so we don't log their metadata, just everyone else's" kind of thing??? Maybe a way to protect the customer? HAHAHAHA ok I kid I kid... (looks at AT&T's history of datacenters logging customer data and cries)

Seriously though, thanks for the reply :)

Yep ... same thing applies to cities that want business to locate there ... many cities haven't yet dragged themselves into the 21st century ... they still have significant bureaucracies in place that make things like Google Fiber or building new factories to create jobs very difficult (and what is the deal with faxing that Google mentioned ... that should be gone gone gone by now) ... cities really need to eliminate many of their rules and procedures to create a more business friendly environment and significantly stream line their registration procedures for new players

As an aside, Google's comment about inaccurate maps affects many aspects of business and consumers lives ... it would be nice to see some states or cities step up with advanced mapping projects that would facilitate new infrastructure installs and help businesses that depend on accurate maps (taxis, parcel carriers, delivery services, etc)

Their public IPO is when it started turning towards being greedy. If you also haven't noticed, that's when it seemed like they stopped innovating also.

WHAT DA FUCK are you talking about....!??!?

I lived in KC and had Google Fiber. It was ~$70 for Internet only, and $120 for Internet + FAR superior (quality wise) cable channel lineup....!!!!

And do you really think ATT would be offering their Gigabit service for the price you're paying, if Goggle Fiber wasn't being rolled out in Austin as well???? Really....????

Out here we have Sonic.net and they sent out an email stating that where they'll expand in fiber will be based upon where their existing service (up to 20Mbps adsl2+ technology) already is. They claim this is to know what areas would really need it. I claim they're just trying to use me to sell more of their product, if they really wanted to know where to expand for fiber they should see who has internet access, and send out postcards stating "Do you want 100Mbps fiber and phone service for $40/month? Do you want 1Gbps fiber and phone service for $70/month? If yes to either of these please check this box."

Because seriously who's going to fucking sign up for DSL service if they want fiber? Turns out they are building fiber near me... right the fuck across from the freeway, so I'm getting to the point of selling out to the devil and getting 105Mbps Comcast service for $45/month for the next 12 months

There is nothing wrong with greed ... that is one of the cornerstones of a capitalistic society ... excessive greed is also relative ... if a drug company spends billions in research dollars to invent a proprietary new drug, shouldn't they be able to charge what they see fit to recover those costs ... unless a company is trying to flood the market with a product or force their competitors out (both of which are usually illegal) they should charge as much as the market will bear for their product (to not do so would be a dereliction of their fiduciary responsibilities to their employees and their shareholders) ... companies do not have any fiduciary responsibilities to consumers

Sure... however the other side of that coin is if the government can take my property for "the good of the people" (aka Eminent Domain) why can't we same the same with corporations?

Eminent domain rules definitely need to be reformed. Although we shouldn't allow an individual the right to block necessary improvements (roads, rezoning, refurbishment, etc), we shouldn't allow eminent domain to allow the government to use eminent domain to pay below market value. The law should be modified so that the government should be forced to pay market value (or total liability) +10% (to prevent them from purchasing under water properties for less than the debt on the property) or to make a suitable accommodation (reroute, rezone, build around, etc), whichever is less expensive

That is cute you think they want this out of the kindness of their heart. They want everyone to have faster speeds so they can make more off of you. They sell your data, they get money from you from ads they sell to show you, they make money off of the ads that you put onto videos onto YouTube. The faster connection you have, the more you use their services, the more you can do with your connection with in the end all means more money for them.

You are paying for google services, you might not be doing it with cash, but you are paying for them.

I stopped paying attention to Google a long time ago and don't use any of their stuff except youtube.

FWIW, Google has a point. Most cities have an archaic process to get anything done. You generally must hire an attorney and file the paperwork in writing or in person. Then, you need a plan and survey the proposed development. Next, you have a hearing with the city counsel. From there, residents, in the proposed area, have the ability to vote for or reject proposed changes. A lot of time, proposals are earmarked with road, sidewalk and/or community improvements in order for approval. Finally, you need to get permits from the city, county and state before you begin anything.

Centurylink has been quietly installing fiber to all the newer buildings in my town. Basically I was told if it was built within the last 18 months and it's within the city-limits it probably has a fiber connection run to it. The funny thing is they aren't advertising it at all. I was shocked as hell when I found out I could get a gigabit internet connection (with no data cap to boot) at my new apartment since, according to all of Centurylink's advertising, that's not supposed to be available here.

@Budwise

No, Google does not want you to do their work for them. You're very mistaken and somewhat misleading this community.

I've had Google Fiber now for over a year, love it and I know exactly what you're talking about. To clarify what Budwise should have said is that Google does want you to "socially" spread the word in you're area. With Google's hope being a grassroots movement with take hold within your fiberhood. Fiberhoods need a minimum amount of subscribers as fiber is somewhat pricey to install. The short of it is in addition to the million's and million's of dollars Google invests, they need all the help they can get, help money cannot buy.

My Googlefiber experience has been amazing. In addition to a brand new Samsung Chrome book that was given to us on top of 2 new Nexus 7's over the last 18 months on top of direct access to Google network engineers and 24 hour hour tech support things have just been lovely.

Google rocks and it's reflected in their Googlefiber service. There are mostly shit and hellishly expensive super corporations out there .... Google is not one of them

Greed is the wanting of more and more solely for the purpose of having it and being able to brag about it.

That may not be the exact dictionary definition of it, but that is a much better explanation of it IMO.

The way the word greed is thrown around makes me think that a lot of people don't really understand what it really is.
